TM0014 : Ray Island

taken 19 years ago, near to Peldon, Essex, England

Ray Island
Ray Island
This is a shot of Ray Island; this is a National Trust reserve run in conjunction with Essex Wild Life Trust LinkExternal link. The island rises two or three metres out of a spit of salt marsh that runs south west of TM0115 : The Strood Causeway to Mersea Island. "Ray" is an SSSI that can only be reached by boat or at low tide by tortuous path across the salt marsh from The Strood. Daytime guardians of the island are a shepherd and his wife who have a small flock of Soay Sheep penned into the "highest" part of the island.
