In the valley of Shaw Beck the remains of Prys Lead mine, including a mine shop, bouse teams, and level entrance. Picture taken from Helwith Lane.

Walking up valley these are the first remains of the old lead mining industry that one comes across. An area of spoil to the right suggests a crushing and dressing floor, and there are remains of a wheelpit behind. The small ruin to the... (more)

Bouse teams were for the storage of mineral rich rock before crushing and dressing to remove the waste and reveal the galena [lead ore]. These teams were close to Prys lead mine, of which very little remains.

It is difficult to say whether this bridge was built for the convenience of footpath users or for the operation of Prys lead mine. It appears to be missing from the OS map of the 1860's, but in the 1890's edition there appear to... (more)
