I just read this amazing book called THE LAST INNOCENT HOUR, which I've been trying to get all my friends to read. It's this amazing historical epic that takes place in Nazi Germany, which also has a love story in it - it's one of the darkest books I've ever read, but the characterization was so good, the narrative so taut, that I know it's going to be one of those books that stays with me for years. That also meant the Queen of All Book Slumps once I'd finished it. Suddenly, the other books I'd been reading lost their shiny appeal. "What would I read next?"

Then I saw some of my friends talking about MIDNIGHT HUNTER. Set roughly 20 years after the Nazis were defeated in WWII, it takes place during the Cold War, in East Germany, when the German Democratic Republic built the wall between East and West Berlins and East Germany was governed by the Stasi, or the ruthless state police.

I read this with my friend Vellini, who is amazing because she loves dark romances as much as I do, so the last couple times when I've suggested a BR, she's always been there. When she gave it five stars, I knew it was going to be good, because she so rarely disappoints me. And MIDNIGHT HUNTER is an amazing book. It's like the sequel to THE LAST INNOCENT HOUR that I didn't even know I needed, with many of the same themes of power, corruption, and love.

Evony is planning to escape from East Berlin with her father and some friends when their escape is halted by the fearsome Mitternachtsjäger (Midnight Hunter), Reinhardt Volker, a Stasi officer of high rank who is notorious for always getting his quarry. After shooting one of her friends in the street, he takes her to his apartment as his "prize," where he grooms her to be his secretary and, later, his lover.

I really enjoyed this book. The pacing was excellent and it has wonderful action sequences that really keep the pace moving. It's appropriately dark and solemn when it needs to be, but it's not one of those books that's all too common these days, that revels in the unsavory just for shock value. Volker is a terrible man, but his growing affection for the heroine softens him (but not unrealistically!) and he never takes her against her will. And the sex scenes! Oh boy! They were hot!

If you like historical romances and dark romances where the villain gets the girl, MIDNIGHT HUNTER will be a great read for you. I hope the author decides to write more historical romances - this seemed wonderfully researched, and each page was an absolute pleasure to read.

It's 1963 behind the Berlin Wall and the hero of this book is one of the most feared men in the East German Secret Police. The general plot of the book is that the heroine is set to escape to West Germany, but he foils her escape and keeps her for his own. Takes her to his posh apartment, scares her a bit, teaches her that sex is awesome, makes her fall in love with him, falls in love with her, kills someone who makes the mistake of touching her, gives up his life for her, they live happily ever after. Whatever. Brianna Hale clearly is a good writer. I have no issue with that. I agree with the other reviewers here that the book is very well written.

Except it sucks, you see, because the hero is a Nazi.

Oh, the author jumps through about a thousand hoops on this to convince you otherwise, but here are the facts: The (not really a) hero of this book was a German soldier during WWII. He was not SS, but he was a soldier for the Reich -- an officer, at that. He wore the Nazi uniform. He fought on the side of the Nazis. She tries to convince you that he wasn't one of the "bad" Nazis. That he didn't hate Jewish people -- in fact, he had a Jewish girlfriend (who was afraid to tell him she was Jewish, I CANNOT IMAGINE WHY) who was killed at Auschwitz before he could get there to save her (we'll leave aside the fact that this diminishes the horrors of Auschwitz immensely, as though victims of the Holocaust were just one good Nazi friend away from being saved). There's some other stuff -- he calls SS Nazis monsters at one point, threatens the heroine when she calls him a Nazi to his face, etc. He's supposed to be heroic because he's smuggling East Germans across the border into West Germany to reunite with their families, on the side. Hale does what she can to make him seem heroic. Except, of course, he's a Nazi. Maybe I could have forgiven it with a more well-rounded past -- maybe I could have been convinced that he was a decent person. I mean, probably not, but maybe. A Nazi in 1963 is still a Nazi.

But then...Here's the kicker: the happily ever after is financed with paintings confiscated from Jewish families by the Reich. I shit you not, the hero becomes an art dealer, and SELLS PAINTINGS that were stolen from Jewish homes to private collectors. Don't worry though, because he anonymously donates the really good paintings to major western art museums, and he keeps the provenance to all the paintings he deals with so that eventually, should Jewish families come looking for this art that was stolen from them along with their homes and families, he can help them find it again. I assume we're supposed to turn a blind eye to the fact that he's making money on the backs of genocide because he donates the Monets and only sells the bad paintings. I don't even know.

It is 2018 and I am sick and tired of normalizing Nazis, y'all. Do better. Read better.

EDIT 2/19/18 - Please keep commenting ridiculous accusations on my review. I will not be bullied into changing MY opinion or view on this book. And by leaving comments, you are bringing it back onto newsfeeds so other people can see/read it. So you are basically promoting it for me. Thanks for that.

He’s hunting me, and there’s nowhere to run.

I was absolutely blown away by this book. Hale throws the readers into a suspenseful, historical, enemies-to-lovers (or is it enemies-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers... enemies?) tale that left me gasping for air. It was dark. It was mysterious. It was erotic. Brianna, I'm going to need more like this - A LOT more.

Circa 1963, many civilians are trying to cross the wall from East Berlin to West Berlin. The police are searching out those that seek to leave, but one officer is feared more than the others - Reinhardt Volker. It is said that he is the Midnight Hunter and that he doesn't play fair. Evony, our protagonist, is captured by Volker after a chaotic scene. That is when she becomes his.

I am der Mitternachtsjäger, and you are my prey. I always catch my prey.

This book made me have heart palpitations - no joke! My heart raced when our protagonist was running from our hero. Or is he a antihero? DUN-DUN-DUNNNN! My heart fluttered when they shared some heated moments. My heart skipped beats when Evony took risks to seek freedom from her captor. Between the heart attacks and stolen breaths, I am surprised I made it through this book.

Unfortunately I can't go into any further detail because I risk spoiling everyone, but please know that I highly recommend this book. It is enriched with German history, angst, and thrilling suspense. There were so many twisty-turns that I literally didn't know what to believe or how to feel. My emotions were amplified and all over the grid. I may or may not have shed a few tears. |clears throat| But seriously guys, this is a must read.

Midnight Hunter is a historical tale of oppression, loss, hope and freedom. Set in East Berlin, Year 1963, Evony and a group of family and friends attempt to escape through the Berlin Wall into the West.

As dangerous as fleeing will be, nothing is as feared as the Midnight Hunter himself Reinhardt Volker, who is renowned for ‘smelling treason’.

A failed attempt sees Evony captured by Volker. Believing she will be incarcerated, she realises that she is destined for a fate much worse.

“Sensible choice, Fräulein. You live here, now. You do not leave this apartment unless it is with me. If you try to escape, you will be found, and you will be killed. Do you understand?”

Forced to leave her life behind Evony is unprepared for her new living arrangements, let alone her jailer who looks at her with heat in his eyes.

"I expected cruelty, and armed myself against brutality, but I wasn’t prepared for this. I wasn’t prepared for him to be gentle and I don’t know how to fight it."

As Volker tries to convince Evony that he is not the enemy, that he is more then his uniform; he will use whichever method of manipulation or seduction to get his point across. She will come to understand that there is no length he will not go to, to keep her.

Midnight Hunter is breathtaking. I was completely enraptured by this story. Not one for historical romances, I still fell in love with both Volker and Evony. Although set in dark times, their story was one of passion and eventually love. Beautiful 💜

"Good? I’m done for. If he can make me feel like that then moral considerations, borders and uniforms don’t come into it. One kiss from him, one look, and all my good intentions amount to nothing."

➳A romance filled with historical aspects that will have you drawn to the history behind the romance of the two characters...

➳Personally, I am not the biggest fan of historical romance... I used to be, however, my love for it stopped after reading OUTLANDER and after watching the show as well, my love for it decided to diminish all together. But let me tell you something, my admiration for historical romance has returned again after reading this masterpiece of a novel. One really cannot fall in love with the story if not interested in the whole aspect of being part of German history. So if you are not a fan of said subject than I do not recommend this book at all. Myself on the other hand, my obsession for German history runs in my blood. I am so glad Brianna asked me to review her novel, but at the same time "WHY BRIANNA!"

➳The reason being is because there is so much that runs through this story that one really cannot and should not state to the public unless you want to be spoiled. My gosh! This story covers all the bases of being part of the German world during a time period in which drags you to the point of believing every word that Brianna writes. The drama, the action, the angst, it all just accumulates all together to make you fall in love with the story and wanting to know what is on the next page or what is to follow up next of Brianna's books.

➳My body for sure heated up in certain scenes and I am not ashamed to admit that Brianna has a big freaking dirty mind (love you babe) but a mind with so much wonders and creative ideas that need to be exploited to the world one hundred percent. Overall, this story is for the audience that looks for the mystery behind German history (that rhymes) with the mixture of a romance novel that will have you yearning for the love and passion that Evony and the broody, older, and handsome Reinhardt have to offer.

Genre: Historical Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Evony Daumler lived in a country divided by political ideologies. Like many others from East Berlin, she dreamed of a better life accross the wall with family and friends. But her escaped was halted when she came across the most feared man in the city.

Reinhardt Volker was known as der Mitternachtsjäger - the Midnight Hunter. As a high ranking Stasi officer, his job was to hunt down defectors and traitors. When he first saw Evony, he knew he wanted her and he would risk everything to keep her.

"If you ever get away from me I will tear West Berlin apart looking for you. I will tear West Germany apart. I hope you know that I can, and that I will. Nothing short of death will keep me from coming for you.”

I was #TeamVolker (yes I like calling him by his last name better, partly due to the persona :p ) from the very beginning. I felt very protective of him and can't help it that I'm a villain whore haha! I appreciate a character who had discipline and drive, while still flexible enough to recognize and adapt to changes.

“You can’t make me forget who I am. I’ll always remember, and I’ll always hate you for what you’ve done.”

Evony was a character I was just ok with. I liked how she had a fight within her, but sometimes she tend to be blinded by her innocence and she was too complacent especially for someone in her situation.

I liked the overall storyline. Technically it is a dark romance but the tone wasn't very dark. I prefer it to be grittier but it geared more towards easy pace suspense which I'm happy with. The earlier part was a little slow for me though because I figured out a few things much earlier. But I really enjoyed the last 20% of the book when the tension was high. I'm also pleased with how the author ended the book because if it went the other way it would have been too much.

Midnight Hunter is a story of fighting for one's right to live a meaningful life. It would appeal to readers looking for dark/forbidden romance in historical settings.

Note 1:
After finishing the book, I noticed there are several hateful ratings/"reviews" of this book. As a reader/reviewer/blogger, I feel it's my responsibility to say respect to authors' works and other reviewers goes a long way. I understand people have hard limits, but please understand the genre and remember it's just fiction.

Note 2:
I feel like swearing in German after reading this book lol!

Evony was just a night away from fleeing East Germany to the more prosperous Germany when they're caught Secret Police officer Reinhardt Volker. There was something about Evony that deeply touched Volker and he brought her to live with him instead of giving her over to police. He made her his secretary and took care of her but she always hated him for he killed her friend. It was because of him that she doesn't know if her father is alive or not. Time passed and then one day she was approached by someone to spy on Volker in exchange of freedom. She absolutely loathe Volker, and was too happy to accept the offer. But soon Evony start peeling off the layers of Reinhardt Volker and realize that he's not what he shows himself to be. And then there comes a day when it was too hard to let go...

A lovely story that enjoyed a lot. It was fast paced and full of action and shows how difficult time was in East Germany of early 60s. Volker was a great character. He was a ruthless, arrogant, tough, and cunning man who knew what he want and would go to great lengths to get it. It was Evony who annoyed me at times with her indecision and too many doubts.

I would recommend this to people who love reading dark romances.

Such a gentlemanly monster.

This is a book that is very polarized right now, and because of that I am a bit uncomfortable reviewing it. There are a lot of “If you like this book you are a Nazi lover” comments being thrown around like confetti. And once upon a time I may have been one of such people, if I’m being entirely honest with myself. It’s probably that confession which makes me the most uncomfortable, to be honest.

Once upon a time, I too, was a girl who comfortably sat on my hand-me-down couch, blissfully unaware of the unpleasant skeletons in my own family closet, and argued that war (any war) was black and white. Good and Evil, isn’t that a comfortable bubble to live in? I never had to think about the obvious challenges that came along with making impossible choices in impossible times. Choices that reflected on not just yourself but your entire family.

It was a handsome ex-soldier with see-through blue eyes who opened my own. Sitting on that very couch he called into question my own history, the shades of English and French – with a touch of Native – that colour it. He asked me, after watching the film “Swing Kids”, if I truly believed that my beloved father would have fought against that regime? If he would have put the lives of myself, my brother, my mother and basically everyone he ever knew in danger? Even knowing, if he could see that far through the chaos, what was right at the time? I venomously argued with him saying that: “yes, my father would have! My father is a good man! How fucking dare you?” That gorgeous soldier just stared at me, all calm blue eyes and hands folded quietly in his lap, until I had blown out of steam and then he raised one blond eyebrow at me. And I started to cry. I started to cry because I didn’t know that, in fact. I cried because life isn’t as pretty and simple as we think it is, when we are young and idealistic and don’t look past the surface. And he held me, making quiet comforting noises, while I sobbed out my own innocence on the subject. He held me in his strong arms, arms that had seen horrors I cannot even imagine in Afghanistan; horrors that left him pale-faced and shaking in the middle of the night. It was in that moment that I truly realized how unrealistic my expectations were. He forever changed how I would look on the subject, that tortured soldier who refers to me to this day, though our relationship ended many years ago, as “My sweetness”. This amazing man who feathered kisses across my palm in a gesture I never before or since have seen as so strong and masculine.

Midnight Hunter is a dark romance between a Stasi Oberstleutnant named Reinhardt Volker and an East German woman named Evony. At times it was incredibly difficult to read, knowing that Volker challenged everything that Evony believed in absolutely. Watching her fight herself and her emotions, knowing that her heart was sliding out of control towards a man who could murder and taunt those around her without a second thought.

It speaks heavily to Hale’s talent as a writer that she was able to spin this romance so beautifully, in a way that made me fall just a little bit in love with Volker too. This huge, monster of a man who was capable of such startling innocence in the face of Evony’s bravado. Make no mistake, this is a story about a man who believed in his country so much that he sacrificed everything for it and a woman who was strong enough to love him anyways.

I buddy-read this with the lovely Heatherdoll and her review goes into some of this story’s faults much more than I will. The editing gets pretty dodgy in the latter half, there is at least one very odd indeed character choice made that seems highly unbelievable and honestly it has a bit of a shiny-pink-bow end to it that feels forced. That being said, this romance moved me in places I haven’t been moved since that evening so many years ago. It made me uncomfortable in the skin I become so complacent in at times. And for that alone, I commend Hale.

I meant to possess you, consume you, bend you to my will. But I took the wrong girl if I wanted that. I took the girl who stared me down. Who talked back. Who defied me. Who scratched and plotted and fought. She was nothing like I expected and yet she is exactly what I needed.

Wow! I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. Recommended to me, I was excited until I realized it wasn’t a typical historical nor your standard contemporary. I’ve never been a fan of anything set in the 1900’s. Until now.

Evony along with a group of other residents of East Berlin are thwarted when they try to escape. Expecting to be sent to a prison for traitors where she will be tortured and tormented, she is shaken, scared and unsure when her captor, Reinhardt Volker – the Midnight Hunter, takes her to his home instead. This man is not known for his kind ways. He has a reputation and the stony cold look upon his face doesn’t help her to think he has anything but evil in plan for her.

Reinhardt was a scary dude going into this story. His character is multi-faceted and we are gradually allowed to see who he really is as one layer at a time is revealed. I love when a hero will do absolutely anything for his woman and despite who he was, Reinhardt was prepared to do so for Evony.

Evony is a strong, smart heroine who is determined to gain her freedom. She never relented when it came to standing up to the hero if though she knew he could dispose of her in the blink of an eye. So many of their interactions left me breathless, afraid she might have pushed him too far this time.

From the beginning this author pulled me into the desperate darkness that living in the shadow of the wall in East Berlin was like. Living far from that shadow I recall cold war talk and never really understanding what that meant but this book shines a whole new light on it from the inside of characters who were living through it. The author’s acknowledgements at the end caused me to choke up because I remember watching the wall come down and while it didn’t affect me directly in my day to day life…it affected the world I live in.

This is my first book by this author and I will most definitely be checking out her backlist!

Dual POV – mostly heroine
Safe – no ow/om drama
No apparent triggers

I was in my 20s when the Berlin Wall came down. Like practically every other political science major in the 1980s, I read The Marx-Engels Reader. The Berlin Wall was in existence my entire life until it came down in 1989. I followed events about The Wall with mild interest since some of my family was from Germany and my grandfather was posted there directly after the end of World War II. I lived through the hard-line posturing by political leaders and witnessed the Olympics boycotts. A good friend of my husband's qualified for the Olympics, but didn't get to travel to Moscow in 1980. It was a real thing - The Cold War - and it was magnified by nuclear detente and the powerhouse of communism. It is complicated to describe these times to my kids today. They don't quite get it. If I didn't feel weird about recommending a book with sex in it, I might suggest they take a look at Brianna Hale's fictional account of a 23-year-old woman and her father suddenly finding themselves on the wrong side of a somewhat arbitrary political dividing line in Berlin that has bombs buried alongside it. Naive though my interpretation might be - living here in the U.S. Midwest - it felt accurate and researched. Plus, it felt cold and sinister and scary - exactly the way I would think someone trying to evade the secret police might feel in 1963 as the noose tightened on freedoms in the East.

Evony has been captured by Reinhardt Volker, nicknamed the Midnight Hunter, the most feared Stasi operative in her section of East Berlin. He has plans for her, but she is afraid to ask, to question, to virtually speak for a while in fear of giving up the others who were trying to escape. She herself has witnessed him do terrible things. But he is acting so strangely, so possessively, and she has no idea if she is a toy or a pawn.

It is this misdirection that fuels the story. Most of the narrative is first-person point of view from Evony. However, every once in a while there will be a chapter from Volker's perspective, and I admit I was trying to figure him out. "He takes an appreciative sip of his coffee, clearly in his element. Subterfuge. Schemes. He thrives on this stuff." After awhile I am in such a tangled web that I cannot figure out Volker's motivations in the least. Is he playing Evony for information? Is he a double agent? Is he a triple agent? Is he a lecher who just wants to possess a pretty girl?

For a good, long time, I was in limbo. I felt like I was in Evony's skin, completely wondering what Volker's motivations might be. But despite herself, she finds her attitude softens somewhat as he reveals small details about his life. But are they all lies, too?

This twisty story perfectly situates you in a real, terrifying time in history and the "coldness" is handled deftly. The communists are a mix of heinous and kind, just like everywhere else. Accounts feel accurate, but misinformation was rampant, so there is that definite sense that nothing can be trusted. At the same time, it is a deeply personal account, that is full of fear, disgust and euphoria.

Despite the cover, and what appears to be the author's backlog of spanking books, this story did not feel overly erotic to me. There are sex scenes, but they are wrapped into the intimidation and emotion of the characters and the evolving distrust that moves the plot. I would definitely read another book by Brianna Hale set in this rarely-attempted historical time period right after the Berlin Wall is erected, just so long as the blurb didn't talk about spanking.

Thanks to Whitney in the Unapologetic Romance Readers group for bringing this book to my attention.

4 'Liebling' stars

Finally, I read Midnight Hunter too. WW1, WW2 and post-war era is not exactly period of time I usually read. It's depressing and even if the books are great 5 stars reads, they always leave a bitter taste. But with all the fuss about this book, I simply needed to know what the scandal is.

I shelved Midnight Hunter as a historical romance, so I rated it as a historical romance. I've read my fair share of historical romances in which heroes are often some kind of soldiers - Roman generals, gladiators, knights, mercenaries, pirates, assassins, knights etc. Basically, they are all just romanticized versions of killers. Killing is what soldiers do. I didn't see Volker - hero or anti-hero of this book - as the vilest monster in the history of books. There are much meaner men in books and real life. Midnight Hunter is just a book and Volker is just a fictional character. Anyway, enough said about that matter.

The story starts with Evony who is trying to flee over the Berlin Wall with a group of people but is captured by der Mitternachtsjäger, the most feared man in East Berlin. Reinhardt Volker is a Stasi officer and he decides to keep Evony for himself. I didn't like Evony at first. I had a feeling that she gave up too soon and too easy. She wanted to escape but she didn't exactly do anything. However, when I tried to picture myself in her place - I would probably hide under the bed and pray that he would forget I exist. So perhaps, I don't have a right to judge her.

The whole book is really intense. I won't give much away because it's better to experience it without any details. I only wish the book would be longer. It all happens too quickly and I wouldn't mind a hundred pages more. It could be amazing instead of good. Another complaint I have is about narrative. Evony has 2/3 chapters. The majority of Volker's POV are those ones in which Evony is not present. Their relationship would be more understandable if it would be equally seen from both sides. In my opinion, it would work better as a third person narrative.

Also, I liked words and sentences in German. It was just a little strange because all characters were speaking German anyway. But still, it was a nice touch. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Brianna Hale.

Holy shit this was so good!!!!!
Thank you Fre06 Begum for the second great recommendation in a row!!! Seriously girl, maybe you should just pick out what I read from now on.

This book has given me something that I've given up on finding for awhile now: real suspense. Edge-of-my-seat suspense that had me second guessing everything. For the first time in a long ass time, I was worried the MC's weren't going to get a HEA even though I already knew they were.

The time setting and the location made me panic at 75% and think "oh my god these characters could actually die right now and the book would be over!!" Because in real life, they probably would have!

Idk, something about it just really captivated me from the beginning. Maybe its because the stakes were so high? Compared to other books where its just one main villain who's "out to destroy the blah blah blah" we have a whole corrupt government/country thats looking for any excuse to crucify its citizens. It made for some really great romantic suspense for sure.

The romance was off the charts. Two beautifully written characters with a lot of emotional depth. I will continue to read from this author; she's definitely caught my attention with her writing.

description

"On these cold, unfriendly streets I found a flower, and I plucked it. I will have this one pleasure, this girl whose final surrender was that of a queen in battle."

I love historical romance especially ones that are about forbidden romances. I haven't read any books that are set in Germany when the Berlin wall was up, so this was a very interesting read to me. I wanted to see how Evony could fall in love with the 'enemy'. Secret police officer Reinhardt Volker is an anti-hero and the author did a great job in getting me to dislike him in the beginning. He did some very horrible things, which he didn't regret doing. Evony hated him before and after he kidnapped her. He saw something in her and he wouldn't let her go for anything.

"Do we deserve our happy ending, a Stasi officer and his captor who's not only forgiven him but fallen in love with him?"

I loved seeing how Evony was fighting with herself, because she was attracted to him but he was also the enemy. I thought the development in her feelings was very organic and it didn't come across as fake. I loved seeing how she piece by piece surrendered herself to Volker, but she also knew what she was doing shouldn't feel so good. There was also enough suspense in this story, that had me on the edge of my seat. It also had a dark edge to the story with explicit sex scenes (which were very HOT). This story has increased my interested in romance books that take place after the WW2 in Germany, specifically when the Berlin wall was still up.

HOW THE HELL DID I NOT READ THIS BOOK EARLIER?!?!?!

It's bloody perfect - the hot-af blond antihero, incredibly unique historical setting, a perfect balance between twisted dark romance and actual plot. One star only deducted because the hero was previously in love with another woman, but it's made very clear he's obsessed with the heroine so I doubt it will bother other readers. I wish Hale had written more books like this.

4.5 stars!

I... feel like I shouldn't like this book. But, I do.
It was very well-written, and I admire the author for trying something different.
Volker was a true anti-hero, and I just love villains.

There were some things that bothered me (towards the ending), that's why it's not 5 stars, but overall, I enjoyed this a lot.

4.5 Stars for Reinhardt and his Liebling 😭💝

Oh my god i don’t even have words! I just finished Midnight Hunter and wow, just wow. It was such a unique story, so rich in history without being overbearing, or boring. I was at the edge of my seat thought 85% of this book!

Brianna, you know how to get a girls heart pumping! Your words and your story just AMAZING. I can’t even form complete sentences.

Evony was a spitfire heroine, and i loved that she never backed down, always fought even if I was dying for her to give in! And REINHARDT 😭😍💝 i don’t want to give too much away but MAN he is not what i expected. I want him for Christmas.

While this book is categorized as dark Romance, it didn’t scream DR to me, not that I mind, this book is awesome regardless!

Midnight Hunter put Brianna Hale on my radar and I’ll DEFINITELY be picking up her books in the very near future!

OK, this was a different read for me and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised, lol and I truly enjoyed it. The beginning was well written in the historical fashion but for me I was just wanting to delve into their "relationship" part and yes, when it finally came into play, I liked it a lot! Great writing, storyline and characters. It was historical and erotic all in the same read!

This is such a heart-warming love story with a different but unique and interesting story line. I adore both H and h. The sex scenes are hot but not overly explicit or disgusting. And that's one thing I love most about this author. Overall I enjoyed this ride very much. And I'm so looking forward from this author.

Thank you Elsa for a wonderful snow storm because you actually let me catch up in reading and writing reviews.

Midnight Hunter took me for a ride. Hot damn! I didn't expect anything while diving into this book. At first, I was really hesitant and I didn't know if I was going to end up liking it or not. However, I'm an idiot and should never go into a book thinking like that ever again. This book was so good! It was really hard to put it down because I was basically sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Now this book was a dual POV with two characters I can't even begin to butcher their names. Spoiler alert: they are German. Another spoiler alert: I'm already terrible with English names.. so yeah, I didn't even try to pronounce their names.. or type them. I called them Girl and Boy - so that's what you are going to call them too.

So Boy is apart of the police and basically kidnaps Girl. Of course there's some tensions, sexual and frustration, because ya know.. the girl was kidnapped and everything. Life definitely sucked ass for her because her family was either shot and killed or somehow disappeared while she was being kidnapped. In the end, her dad was a douche and the letter that she wrote to him made me mad.

Back to the sexual frustration, not this book didn't deliver a whole bunch of smut like some of the other books I've been reading lately. However, what you get in this book is fire. Knowing me I was shipping Boy and Girl since day 1. Hell, I was probably their biggest cheerleader ever. So I obviously already knew they were end game before they even knew.

Now speaking of Boy and Girl. Girl was sometimes an annoying twat. God, she wouldn't stop being annoying and whiny. It's like she couldn't understand that this was her life now. I honestly wanted to slap her a couple of times to shut her up.. but alas I still can't seem to reach into a book to do these things!

Overall, I ended up loving the shit out of this book. Their relationship definitely saved this book. I didn't care for the predictable back stabbing or anything else really. Their love gave me life. I could totally see myself reading another book by Brianna in the near future.

Loved this one!

“He plants a slow, tender kiss on the side of my neck and I feel my pulse thundering beneath his lips. It’s a kiss that belies the cold cruelty of his words and the steel of his embrace. It’s the kiss of a lover, soft and sensuous...”

This is my first read by this author and I absolutely loved it.

Firstly I rarely read historical stories. They just ain’t my kinda read however this was an awesome read and I’m so glad I read it.

Evony is trying to escape from East Berlin in the early 1960s. She’s captured by a very dangerous man, Volker. What Volker wants he gets and in this case he wants Evony for himself so instead of sending her to prison he takes her home to his own prison.

This book was all kinda good. I really don’t want to go into it too much as I don’t want to spoil it. I’ll definitely be re reading this and am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This was fucking awesome! *she repeated for the ninth time*

Look I know I repeat myself a bit but what can I say? Obviously nothing new. Xaxaxaxa Goddess, I am so funny :D

Anyways..

Surprise, surprise I'm not gonna go into details (ha!).

- The writing and the story was fantastic and good paced. The details were on point and the author did her research.

- Volker was fucking awesome! Too bad we didn't have many chapters from his POV. Evony was like that annoying little shit of a cousin that gets on your nerves half the time but sometimes you admire their spirit and bravery and all that. I liked her somewhat and admired her on occasion but there were lots of times when I wanted t slap her into next week.

- 🔥🔥 The Sex was 💯 🔥🔥

- Some reviewers believed the heroes didn't deserve a HEA to which I kind of agree. Kind of as in Volker did but Evony may or may not have. It's not that she didn't go through enough buuuut yeah.. *shrugs*

- End of book spoiler

But I loved it and I would totally recommend! Thanks to Nens for bringing this to my very short spanned attention!

Ouuu look, something shinny! *runs off*

This was a great read . I'm not entirely certain that I accurately tracked the German history, but I loved reading this book anyway.

Reinhardt and Evony were like Romeo and Juliet. Their love story is epic. I love that Evony is feisty and doesn't just give into Reinhardt. Reinhardt was surprising. I was expecting him to be cruel towards Evony. It was like now he is going to show his true colors, but it never happened. He was not as bad as he was made out to be. Except And also the constant mention of

The book is well written, and the style is engaging, though the plot does get a little slow. There's so much packed into this book. I will be honest that history is not really my subject. And their is so much of German history. The story is set when the Berlin Wall was up. I didn't had much idea about this. Brianna Hale has clearly done her research and has does an excellent job of explaining historical events in a way that connects to readers. The knowledge was astounding.

I'm very happy with the ending.

Wow. I had zero expectations going into this one, I've never read a book by this author before and from her other book covers I thought this would just be a spicy little story which would get me out of a shit book slump.

Boy did it get me out if it and boy did I completely underestimate this book.

I honestly couldn't put this book down, I ignored my family and pretended there weren't things like washing or dinner 😂

Here's a little snap shot of the things I enjoyed about this book:

- Age gap
- Asshole morally grey H
- Strong h who gives it right back to the H
- Sexual tension by the truckload
- 🔥🔥🔥 sexy times
- Thrills and suspense
- Epic swoony love story that took it's time and made the ending all that more beautiful
- Set in a time period I've never read in a romance and now I want more!

I absolutely loved the H and yes, he's done stuff that's beyond horrible but gosh darn it, I have a weak spot for these H's who will burn the world down for the h.

I really loved this authors writing style and I'm excited to read more from her.
