Genre: Historical Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:
Evony Daumler lived in a country divided by political ideologies. Like many others from East Berlin, she dreamed of a better life accross the wall with family and friends. But her escaped was halted when she came across the most feared man in the city.
Reinhardt Volker was known as der Mitternachtsjäger - the Midnight Hunter. As a high ranking Stasi officer, his job was to hunt down defectors and traitors. When he first saw Evony, he knew he wanted her and he would risk everything to keep her.
I was #TeamVolker (yes I like calling him by his last name better, partly due to the persona :p ) from the very beginning. I felt very protective of him and can't help it that I'm a villain whore haha! I appreciate a character who had discipline and drive, while still flexible enough to recognize and adapt to changes.
Evony was a character I was just ok with. I liked how she had a fight within her, but sometimes she tend to be blinded by her innocence and she was too complacent especially for someone in her situation.
I liked the overall storyline. Technically it is a dark romance but the tone wasn't very dark. I prefer it to be grittier but it geared more towards easy pace suspense which I'm happy with. The earlier part was a little slow for me though because I figured out a few things much earlier. But I really enjoyed the last 20% of the book when the tension was high. I'm also pleased with how the author ended the book because if it went the other way it would have been too much.
Midnight Hunter is a story of fighting for one's right to live a meaningful life. It would appeal to readers looking for dark/forbidden romance in historical settings.
Note 1:
After finishing the book, I noticed there are several hateful ratings/"reviews" of this book. As a reader/reviewer/blogger, I feel it's my responsibility to say respect to authors' works and other reviewers goes a long way. I understand people have hard limits, but please understand the genre and remember it's just fiction.
Note 2:
I feel like swearing in German after reading this book lol!

This book surprised me (in a good way). I was worried about it being an abusive Nazi romance - but thankfully I've been proven wrong. The male lead is most definitely not a Nazi. I don't know why some reviewers keep saying this.
