2023 •
The Problem of territorial disputes in the South China Sea have long occurred in the dynamics of Indo-Pacific international politics. However, it is interesting that during the Covid-19 Pandemic situation, the conflict between Indonesia and China is increasingly accompanied by the involvement of the United States and Russia in the region. This essay aims to describe Indonesia's national and geostrategic interests in the South China Sea conflicts region. This study uses qualitative methods, then data is collected using interviews and documentation. The results of this study found that Indonesia is interested in maintaining the sovereignty and economic potential in the North Natuna Sea. Indonesia is increasing patrols and military cooperation with the United States as a way to show sovereignty, even though China also influences the Indonesian economy, especially in investment. In addition, Indonesia is cooperating with Russia in exploring and exploiting oil and natural gas in the North Natuna Sea region. This military and business cooperation have become Indonesia's geostrategy in counteracting China's intervention in the North Natuna Sea region. The geostrategic implications strengthen Indonesia's position in regional politics, especially related to defending territorial sovereignty from the threat of other countries.

The territorial sea is the area of the sea zone closest to the coast, entirely subject to coastal sovereignty. Navigating China's Gray Zone Strategy in the South China Sea2020 •
“Gray zone” strategies are situations characterized by competitive interactions between and among state or non-state actors which exist short of a formal state of war. The coercive actions in a “gray zone” vary and fall below key thresholds of conflict that could prompt a conventional military response. These are situations that have the following features – aggressive, perspective-dependent, and ambiguous – and the following elements – revisionism, gradualism and unconventionality. This article was an assessment of the challenges in the South China Sea from these “gray zone” strategies of China and its impact to Philippine national security. This paper attempts to situate “gray zone” strategy and other such operations within China’s overall grand strategy and assess AFP’s readiness to respond to these challenges.

The Rationality of Indonesia Free-Active Politics Facing Chinese Aggressiveness in the Claims of the North Natuna Sea2020 •
China's claim to the North Natuna Sea is a manifestation of the South China Sea conflict. For this action, Indonesia responded with diplomatic rebuff either through political means or the presence of national defense and security stakeholders in the North Natuna Sea. The Chinese government responded that the claim of the Nine-dash Line that intersects with the North Natuna Sea EEZ is legal. This aggressive action of China is a threat to Indonesia's sovereign rights over the North Natuna Sea. This paper analyzes foreign policy as the political position of Indonesian interaction in responding to Chinese aggressiveness. The author uses descriptive analytical qualitative research methods using the Hedging Strategy and Dependency theory. The Chinese claim is a potential challenge to the interests and sovereignty of Indonesia, which is contested with the principle of a free and active foreign policy based on soft diplomacy and independent approach. The approach and steps of Indone...

Indonesia's swift securitization of the Natuna Islands how Jakarta countered China's claims in the South China Sea2019 •
After being a neutral actor for decades in the complex South China Sea (SCS) territorial disputes, Indonesia has seen itself compelled by China's assertiveness to become firmer about protecting its territorial sovereignty around the Natuna Islands (NI). Jakarta is alarmed by China's claims that it has undeniable historical fishing rights in the NI territorial waters because they undermine Indonesia's territorial sovereignty. Our analysis loosely adopts the securitization conceptual framework proposed by the Copenhagen School to reveal that Jakarta swiftly securitized the NI issue between 2014 and 2016. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this paper unpacks how the Indonesian printed mainstream media discussed the NI in recent years. By the end of 2016, the Indonesian media portrayed China's claims that it has historical fishing rights in the NI territorial waters as the most urgent national security threat to Indonesia, i.e. the NI issue was securitized. This analysis shows that the Indonesian people accepted Jakarta's security discourse, i.e. Jakarta had successfully securitized China's claims over the NI territorial waters. This paper makes a new contribution to the securitization literature by simultaneously analysing the Indonesian news and social media outlets.

The Third Millennium is arguably the most formative period in Mesopotamian History. Its historical and cultural processes lay the groundwork for the development of later Ancient Near Eastern civilizations. While Third Millennium text corpora may be broad and diverse, they often present similar problems that call for shared solutions. Unfortunately, the complex and fragmentary nature of the documentation is also known to attract less attention compared to later periods, leaving space for a new impulse in the field. This is the foreground of the organization of this session, the third in a series of thematic workshops on third millennium studies at the Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale – the first two were held in Paris 2019 and Leiden 2023. After a reassessment of the current research in Third Millennium studies, the speakers will briefly present their original research as an introduction to the workshop. Armando Bramanti will present his current work on text editions, with particular regard to Latin American collections. Angela Greco will offer an overview of her research on the exploitation and management of natural resources in the southernmost Mesopotamian landscape. To conclude, Géraldine Mastelli will bring attention to a selection of Urukagina’s fish offering lists challenging the notion of ki-en-gi in Early Dynastic Sumer. Location: 69th RAI, Helsinki. Event date: July 8-12, 2024
