Jawāhir al-asmār (Jewels of Stories) is the earliest Persian translation, known thus far, of Sukasaptati (Seventy tales of the parrot) realized in 713-715 /1313-1315 by a secretary named „Imād ibn Muḥammad Ṯaġarī at the court of „Alā al-Dīn Ḫaljī (r.1290-1316). Jawāhir al-asmār could be the same Persian verbose rendering that Ẓiyā‟ al-Dīn Naḫšabī (d. ca. 751/1350-51) mentions in the introduction to his popular Ṭūṭī-nāma, as the most prominent source he used for preparing his Persian version of the tales of the parrot. For this presentation, we will focus on the study of Ṯaġarī‟s translation, of which only one incomplete manuscript has resided up to the present time. A comparative analysis of Jawāhir al-asmār and the other Ṭūṭī-nāma with the Sanskrit text will pursue to shed light on the significant variations of themes and the composition of tales in different versions through the time. To what extent was the translator loyal to the original text? What Indian elements were received in the Persian version without any adjustment or modification? How differently were these tales perceived according to the socio-cultural standards of the Sufi Muslim milieu? These are the questions to which this paper will intend to supply a reply.

Signs from Above: Towards a Comparative Symbology of Bird Imagery in Medieval Near Eastern Popular Prose This article presents excerpts from two near-contemporary works of popular prose from the medieval Near East: the Persian Dārāb-nāmeh and the Arabic Sīrat Banī Hilāl. In each, birds or birdlike characters (the sīmorgh and the crow, respectively) that share in having had theriomorphic, mythic significance in regional pre-Islamic traditions dispense premonitory wisdom to Muslim characters. Comparing these passages, the article contends that the characterization of these birds brokers a pietistic shift in symbolism between the pre-Islamic and Islamic context, while still maintaining the birds' mystical significance and sustaining the trope of birds as winged, heaven-sent messengers. This modified association between birds and divine ministry is not only prominent in these two texts, but also in the Qurʾān and varied bestiaries, poetry, and belletristic works that comprise these texts' cultural network.

The Mystic Poetry of ʿAṭṭār and the Conference of the Birds2012 •
This article appears in a large-format edited book published in conjunction with an international exhibition of Persian, Mughal, and Ottoman manuscripts from the collections of the Bodleian Library, Oxford. My article engages with ʿAṭṭār’s Conference of the Birds (Manṭeq al-ṭayr), initially through a description of the various valleys through which the world’s birds must pass, according to ʿAṭṭār’s frame-story, so as to arrive at union with the Simurgh, an allegorical representation of the Divinity. Apart from ʿAṭṭār’s poetic text, my account draws on illuminated manuscript depictions of ʿAṭṭār and his characters (e.g. MSS. Ouseley Add. 24, fol. 65v & Elliott 246, fol. 25v). I then underline certain revealing narratival correspondences among ʿAṭṭār’s epic and later European works such as The Parliament of Fowls of Chaucer (c. 1343-1400), Itinerarium Mentis in Deum of Bonaventure (1221-1274), and Divina Commedia of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). I conclude with a discussion of the historical possibility of Islamic sources (such as the Prophet Muḥammad’s Night Journey (Isrāʾ) or Ascent (Miʿrāj) as well as the Manṭeq al-ṭayr itself) underpinning these Christian works.

A preliminary commentary of this complex text seen as a shamanistic rite of passage through a Jungian depth-psychology filter and a tentative aural-visual anagrammatical reading underscoring concomitant and complementary interpretations. All justified and elucidated by strict textual references.
