Neo-Darwinian biology has demonstrated that it is possible to construct a theory of life that excludes the role of organisms' free choice. In a richer theory, the latter as a possibility needs to be taken into account. For that purpose, it is necessary to introduce the biological concept of choice, analyse its structure and roles, and consider some implications for biological theory. It is argued here that the conditions for free choice emerge together with umweltthe space of synchronous options. Basically, choice does not require purpose. This leads to the conclusion that freedom is an attribute of life.

The mouth-washing ritual (mīs pî) consisted of two days of intense ceremonial practices aimed at activating the cult statue. Once the mīs pî was completed, the statue was seen as a flesh-and-blood god possessing all five senses. To bring the wooden shell to life, it was crucial to establish that the effigy was of divine origin and not just a man-made object. Therefore, this paper discusses the misrecognition processes of human activity that allowed the statue to be considered a divine being. The study specifically examines the ritual use of the phrase «I did not make» (anāku ul ēpus) by artisans to deny their role in creating the effigy. The "negative confession" of the craftsmen is compared to other Mesopotamian rituals-for instance, the activation of the kettledrum (lilissu)-and discussed on the basis of speech act theory.
[This review/essay first appeared on the Hollywood Progressive website on July 7, 2024.] The new eight-part Paramount + TV series “A Gentleman in Moscow” is based on a same-named novel of 2016. The “gentleman” in the title is Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor). From June 1922, he is restricted to Moscow’s Hotel Metropol, under threat of death if he leaves, and so he remains there (except for one emergency occasion) until he escapes in 1954. The story emphasizes both the communist political background and the count’s personality-- he is a “gentleman” of noble upbringing and somewhat of a Stoic in adapting to his restrictions. In the series the acting throughout is top notch, with McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (real-life husband and wife), as an actress and his lover Anna, being especially excellent, as is English actor Johnny Harris as Soviet security official Osip Glebnikov. Despite some revisions, the adaptation of the novel to a TV series does the story no major damage.
