Reflexive Learning

This case study looks at the Individual Dance Project (IDP) as integral to the Bachelor (Honours) in Dance Studies course offered by the University of Malta’s School of Performing Arts as an example of high-impact teaching where students are guided and challenged to build unique projects which investigate a phenomenon in both theory and practice. The case study supports the view that artistic research at the undergraduate level creates an opportunity for students to exercise a range of skills as scholars, facilitators and performers.

En los últimos años se está comprobando que la transmisión de conocimiento consistente en comunicar y ofrecer contenido ya elaborado al alumnado, tal y como se ha venido haciendo desde hace muchos años en el ámbito educativo, no conduce a la consecución de un aprendizaje eficaz. Se hace necesario introducir en la formación tanto en niveles no universitarios como en los universitarios, metodologías diferentes, metodologías más activas que garanticen un protagonismo al alumnado, quien verdaderamente debe construir su propio aprendizaje. Así metodologías como el aprendizaje basado en proyectos, el Flipped Learning, el Visual Thinking, la gamificación, etc., están adquiriendo cierta relevancia en nuestros días y entre el profesorado con ganas de hacer las cosas de una forma diferente, un cambio que permita mejorar la educación. Ha quedado ampliamente demostrado que la construcción del conocimiento, el aprendizaje en definitiva, es tanto más perdurable y fuerte, cuanto mayor peso damos a la participación activa de la persona implicada. Una de las metodologías en las que mayor importancia se da a la persona en su propio aprendizaje es aquella que pasa por que sea ésta quien reflexione sobre éste. Así, el aprendizaje reflexivo con la incorporación de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) aportando un extra de motivación, facilidad de uso, valor añadido y versatilidad, se convierten en magníficos aliados hacia la consecución de un aprendizaje más válido y perdurable entre el alumnado. Por todo ello, nos marcamos como objetivo de esta investigación, estudiar cuan de eficiente resulta la utilización de la reflexión sobre el propio aprendizaje del alumnado universitario. Y para ello, se trabajó durante dos cursos escolares con tres grupos de 2º del Grado en Educación Infantil en las asignaturas de Didáctica del Conocimiento del Medio Natural y Diseño Curricular y Aulas Digitales en Educación Infantil de la Universidad de Alicante, un total de 146 estudiantes. Para comprobar si el aprendizaje reflexivo realmente propicia un aprendizaje más eficiente, se exigió al alumnado la confección de un blog personal. Con dicho blog se pretende que el alumnado lleve un seguimiento de lo aprendido y plasme las evidencias que de dicho aprendizaje se fueran produciendo a modo de cuaderno o diario de aprendizaje y en el que de forma diaria y progresiva debían ir dejando constancia de ello. Al alumnado se les pasó un cuestionario de autopercepción sobre el aprendizaje conseguido tanto al inicio como al final de la asignatura, y en el que además valoraban la eficacia de esta metodología de reflexionar sobre el propio aprendizaje de forma personal y en un recurso digital de estas características como es el blog. Los resultados arrojan resultados en los que el alumnado valora muy positivamente la realización del blog a modo de cuaderno de aprendizaje y como éste, el aprendizaje, desde su autopercepción, es mayor, más eficaz y más duradero que el que hubiese obtenido por otras formas de proceder. Reconocen además que el realizarlo en un formato de blog digital, pese a las dificultades que pueda conllevar en aquellas personas no familiarizadas con este recurso, supone una gran ventaja, un gran aliciente y una mejora frente a otro recurso en formato analógico. Queda pues patente que el aprendizaje reflexivo obtenido mediante esta práctica de realizar un cuaderno de aprendizaje en un blog, proporciona en el alumnado un aprendizaje de mayor valor, más eficiente y de mayor calidad que el que se obtiene mediante otros métodos que no recurren a la reflexión y el uso de las TIC.

What can a teacher do with a camera? What happens when teachers become filmmakers? How can drawing become an entry point for reflection? How can autobiographical texts become pedagogical texts? And how can tools such as these contribute to teachers’ self-study in relation to addressing HIV and AIDS? Teacher educators at a number of institutions in South Africa have been exploring pedagogic and research strategies that aim to reposition teachers’ experiences and voices at the centre of teacher development in the age of AIDS. In this chapter, we highlight our work as teacher educator–researchers at two institutions, the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. We begin by describing our experiences of using creative and participatory approaches to enhance pre-service and practising teachers’ engagement with HIV and AIDS-related issues. We then consider how this work fits into the larger picture of policy and research issues related to teacher education in the age of AIDS. To conclude, we offer some recommendations for educational planning and policy.

Private dispute resolution processes are an increasingly established global phenomenon. Some processes, like international commercial arbitration, have been formally in pace for more than a century and draw upon clear principles of law and contract. Arbitrators and parties are guided by relevant treatises, procedural rules, and well-settled practices. Other international dispute resolution processes, like negotiation, mediation, conciliation, and conflict coaching, similarly have a long history and some process guidance. However, by their very nature, these non-adjudicative, cooperative processes are multidimensional, fluid, and complex. They require the intervener, parties, and their representatives to engage with one another in ways that go beyond the law and well into the realm of human relations. In order to make the best use of such cooperative processes, interveners, parties, and representatives - hereafter "conflict practitioners" - draw upon knowledge, insights, and skills related to communication, culture, history, language, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, among many other fields. They also draw upon their own professional and personal lived experience.

As cooperative private international dispute resolution practices become increasingly common, it is tempting for conflict practitioners to assume that the human relations insights, skills, and practices that worked well for them at home will be equally effective (and appropriate) in an international, cross-cultural environment. However, exporting the ways we understand and interact with others in conflict form a domestic environment into new and different legal, political, economic, cultural, and social environments can be problematic. At best, exporting our set ideas and practices can lead to missed insights and lost opportunities for better solutions to the disputes at hand. At worst, this practice can exacerbate disputes, causing greater confusion, more deeply entrenched conflict, and less likelihood of resolution. As a result, attending to the human dimension of conflict and interaction should be a central part of global negotiation and dispute resolution practice. That is the focus of this essay.

Working in the global dispute resolution environment puts into clear relief the need for conflict practitioners to be attuned to themselves and to their counterparts in ways that might not have been apparent in local practice. As mentioned above, this attunement goes beyond technical legal knowledge and skills. It also includes being attuned to the subtle and complex human, cultural, linguistic, and other relational dimensions of working across social worlds. One way to be so attuned is to develop reflective and reflexive practice - intentionally seeking to learn and grow from one's past experience ("reflection-on-action") and developing multiple dimensions of awareness as the conflict interaction actually unfolds ("reflection-in-action").

This essay focuses on these two dimensions of reflective and reflexive practice, In the next part, the author discusses the nature of reflection-on-action and reflection-in-action from a modernist ("reflective") and postmodern ("reflexive") perspective. These modern and postmodern concepts of reflective and reflexive practice parallel a growing trend in the conflict literature from a "modernist" to a postmodern or "social constructionist" orientation to understanding conflict itself.

In the final part, the author examines how engaging with practice reflexively reveals additional dimensions of awareness about ourselves, other parties, and the conflict context. I then bring together the elements of reflective and reflexive practice to articulate a more holistic conception of "awareness" that can help conflict practitioners more purposefully learn from past experience and develop greater awareness as conflict interactions unfold.

En la actualidad, estamos comprobando como la transmisión de conocimiento ya elaborado al alumnado, tal y como se ha venido haciendo en los últimos años, no consigue llegar a ofrecer un aprendiza-je eficaz. En educación se hace necesario buscar otras formas de aprender en las que el alumnado sea quien realmente indague y construya conocimiento. Una de estas metodologías activas es aquella en la que el alumnado reflexiona sobre su propio aprendizaje, el aprendizaje reflexivo. Con la intención de comprobar la autopercepción del alumnado sobre si este aprendizaje resulta más eficaz que otras metodologías con las que ya está familiarizado, se trabajó con 189 alumnas y alumnos de 2º curso del Grado de Magisterio en Educación Infantil de la Universidad de Alicante. Al alumnado se le exigió la realización de un blog personal en el que a modo de diario de aprendizaje fuese analizando día a día su propio aprendizaje. Tanto al inicio como al final de la asignatura en la que se llevó a cabo la experiencia, se les pasó un cuestionario de autopercepción sobre el aprendizaje conseguido. Los resultados fueron bastante clarificadores. De ellos se desprende que el alumnado valora muy positivamente la realización del blog y considera que con él se obtiene un aprendizaje más eficaz que el obtenido con otras metodologías.

This chapter reworks notions of reflexivity, exploring how it can be considered as a process through which bodies and places, always mutually constitutive, are continuously and relationally negotiated in ways that decenter subjectivity. Negotiations are out of anyone's control, the making of bodies and places being partial, ephemeral, unsynchronized, and incomplete; the subject is only momentarily stabilized through highly contingent processes that involve being and becoming a 'place' of (and for), chaotic, multiply directed, and multi-scalar demands, expectations, and practices. I argue, accordingly, that 'reflexivity' in cross-cultural fieldwork is about allowing ourselves to be epistemologically disciplined by the unknown, which impresses us from the outside. It is about learning to accept, reject, and respond physically to externalities and subjectivities in ways that allow us to better entertain difference. In this sense, reflexivity is less about self-introspection, self-reflection, "self-conscious practices...in thinking and writing" or self-emanating contemplation of how one "positions and includes oneself in relation to a subject os study" (Marcus 1992, 489; as it is characteristically defined in the social sciences) than about learning to recognize others' constructions of us through 'their' initiatives, spaces, bodies, judgements, prescriptions, proscriptions, and so on. In metaphorical and material terms, reflexivity is about allowing our 'bodies' to become 'places' for 'fielding difference.

Artist-led doctorates are flourishing across academia, challenging traditional thesis forms.

My project involved creating a vinyl record trilogy with a reflective guide/exegesis. It is an idiosyncratic ethnography of the self, rooted in artistic interventions to chronic health problems.

The work was placed in the growing academic field of ‘autoethnography’.

In the lecture, I unpick my doctorate –The Fragmented Filmmaker - Emancipating The Exhausted Artist, in order to investigate why autoethnography is not only a useful tool in constructing a PhD, but also a framework for practical, political and personal development.

The Reflexive Selfie: Create your own ‘Idioholism’

The ‘engine’ of my doctorate was compacted into an artist’s manifesto. Essentially it aimed to assist any practitioner towards ‘triangulating’ accessible art projects in order to have a more fulfilling existence. It was initially created for me, but I always wanted to expand it to others.

I’d like to try something I’ve not done before in the workshop, that is, have participants attempt to apply principles of my framework to their own lives and share the results.

Using elements of the manifesto, this workshop will trial out some of the more accessible techniques. Bring an open mind and construct the beginnings of your own ‘idio-holistic’ map.

This manuscript aims to embed a researcher’s reflexive account within a qualitative interview in an iterative process whereby a self-analytic reflexive exercise was conducted prior to, during the interview, and within the analysis of the interview. This interview was conducted between an overseas PhD student as an interviewer and a native PhD student as interviewee. The researcher’s (interviewer) demonstration of learning about herself is of particular importance in this piece of work. Having the chance to conduct this interview between an overseas PhD student and a native student provided insights about the stereotypes implanted within the researcher which meant that she assumed that a PhD is more stressful for overseas than for home students.

La sociedad en general y el mundo educativo en particular están cambiando. Los medios y los canales por los que nos informamos y aprendemos, han pasado de ser unos a ser otros. Las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) y más concretamente la red de redes que es Internet, han originado una serie de cambios que repercuten de forma muy directa en el aprendizaje, en la generación de conocimiento. Personas jóvenes y no tan jóvenes, ya no utilizan los medios clásicos (televisión, prensa escrita, radio, libros y enciclopedias, etc.) ni para obtener información ni para entretenerse. Ni tan siquiera buscadores como Google en Internet se utilizan ya en muchos casos para la búsqueda de información. En la actualidad, el uso y consumo de vídeos en canales y herramientas como Youtube, Whatsapp, Vimeo y otros, están sustituyendo a los canales y medios clásicos de informarse y aprender (Tan, 2013). Con el fin de comprobar que este cambio se está produciendo y que vídeos cortos pueden ayudar a mejorar el aprendizaje si se usan a modo de introducción motivadora, se lleva a cabo esta investigación. En ella, sin renunciar a métodos clásicos de aprendizaje, hemos visto de qué manera la introducción de la clase de alumnado universitario, mejora y predispone hacia un mejor aprendizaje si se realiza con el visionado, comentario y reflexión de pequeños vídeos, frente a otro tipo de introducciones que no recurren a vídeos o sin introducción alguna. Quisimos ver en que grado el aprendizaje visual y reflexivo del alumnado mejoraba. Para ello, se analizaron los resultados obtenidos en dos grupos de estudiantes de 2º curso del grado de Magisterio Infantil de la Universidad de Alicante, un total de 91 estudiantes, que durante un cuatrimestre del curso 2016-2017 en la asignatura de Didáctica del Conocimiento del Medio Natural, trabajaron con introducciones de pequeños vídeos en todas sus clases. Se les pasó un cuestionario a la finalización del cuatrimestre y se analizaron sus resultados así como las reflexiones y opiniones vertidas en los blogs que a modo de cuaderno de aprendizaje estaban obligados a cumplimentar. La percepción del alumnado constata que son muy favorables a la utilización del vídeo como pequeña introducción de las clases y del conocimiento que se va a tratar en ellas. Consideran que mejora la calidad del aprendizaje que se produce en las clases, y que lo hace por delante de otros métodos más tradicionales (introducciones sin la utilización de ningún recurso audiovisual o sin introducción alguna). Así mismo, el reflejar por escrito las reflexiones y comentarios surgidos de dicho visionado en sus cuadernos de aprendizaje y el poder insertar en éstos los mismos vídeos, es considerado por los estudiantes como un valor añadido a su motivación e interés por los contenidos de la asignatura que a su vez se traduce en una mejora del aprendizaje, un aprendizaje más eficaz y de mejor calidad. Como inconvenientes a dicha práctica solo se mencionaron el que en algunos casos se trataba de vídeos que ya habían visto y que en algún caso de un vídeo un poco largo (un poco más de cinco minutos), costaba seguir manteniendo la atención y el interés. Como conclusión, destacar que los estudiantes encuentran muy motivadora y enriquecedora esta práctica y reconocen que despierta su interés y ganas de aprender sobre lo trabajado en dicha materia, demostrando así el poder que en nuestros días tienen los contenidos audiovisuales en la generación de conocimiento (de la Fuente, Solís & Martos, 2013).

Some scholars have concluded that critical reflection may be too difficult to operate in a workplace context. Yet this is in tension with the rise of normative theories calling for its operation in practice, and linking this with critical HRD’s hope for a more reflexive practitioner world.  This looks like an impasse, as critical reflection is rejected where it is supposedly needed most. The purpose of this article is to present a theoretical framework which can point beyond this problem. The framework is inspired by Hannah Arendt’s concept of the public space of appearance. Leaning on this idea, critical reflection is provided with important spatial inflections which can supply current theory with the political reflexivity it seems to lack. Critical reflection is theorised as a challenging, but intrinsically reflexive space of honesty, critique, and new beginnings. Implications for future thinking about critical reflection in critical HRD are discussed. Conclusions are also drawn for how this framework may help to advance this field’s praxical project.

ABSTRACT L a crisis ambiental y social que aqueja al planeta hace urgente practicar y rescatar valores para que el pensamiento científico se construya con la gente y no para la gente (Funtowicz y Ravetz, 2000). La educación juega un papel importante en esta empresa por lo que debe renovar su contrato social para que sea catalizadora de reflexiones sobre los impactos de los productos científicos y tec- nológicos en la sociedad. Una estrategia educativa es la alfabetización tecnocientífica con un enfoque CTS (Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad) porque impulsa acciones ciudadanas que repercuten en el diseño de políticas sobre ciencia y tecnología.
