Interview Questions

Academic jobs remain difficult to attain. Over the last few years, several colleagues have sought advice from me on how to approach an interview of a job search. My experience, both as a job applicant and as a member of over six academic search committees, can offer a comprehensive take on the academic interview process that candidates undergo for tenure-track positions. The following represents the notes of a talk that I gave to the Graduate Student Caucus at Loyola University of Chicago on how PhDs and academic job-seekers should engage the application and interview process: · How to present your story and fit for the job and academic community; · How to establish a relationship with the search committee; · How to prepare and engage in the interview process.

Grooming plays an important role in an interview, in first 2 minutes an interviewer will decide to select you or not. These tips of grooming oneself will help the freshers as well as professional to be in proper attire because every organization expects to be professionally dressed. It is to be identifying that if the candidate is dressed professionally then they feel positive during an interview.

How and why did a labor union organizer from Goa, a former Naxalite student cadre from West Bengal, and a Jesuit priest from Tamil Nadu end up as spokespersons for adivasi rights in contemporary Jharkhand? What caused their political discourse to shift from tribal/adivasi  to indigeneity? Might indigeneity be an ideology for these activists?

To answer these interrelated questions, this paper analyzes the oral histories of three leading indigenous rights activists in Jharkhand, formerly south Bihar. In these self-narratives, I focus on the ways in which these middle-class activists have crafted their political ethics with reference to “indigenous communities” in India and beyond. I argue that “indigeneity” functions in Jharkhandi activist discourses as a marker of a distinctive post-materialist turn in bourgeois politics. The defense of the indigenous or primitive speaks to deep-seated existential crises among bourgeois activists, who seek to simultaneously transcend the modern domains of state and capital as well as locate an authentic space of political ethics and critique in imagined adivasi collectivities. 

By acting as patrons of “primitive” peoples  who purportedly avoid lying, the state, and the money economy, indigeneity activists assume vanguardist roles in ways that satisfy, firstly, the bourgeois critique of electoral democracy in post-Mandal India and, secondly, the post-Naxalbari desire for an independent left outside the existing communist party alternatives. These twin sources of the Jharkhandi activist’s self may be often complementary, but, at the same time, there are very real tensions between them. As the three activist tales in this paper demonstrate, independent left activists, for example, often takes bourgeois politics in contemporary India as their ideological point of departure; the bourgeois celebration of the individual is, similarly, at odds with the leftist quest for post-capitalist collectivities. Nonetheless, these tensions come to the fore most clearly when we consider the limited popular support enjoyed by these activists, especially when ordinary adivasi men and women refuse to assume what Michel Rolph-Trouillot (2003) famously called the “savage slot.” 

This kind of rejection, in fact, further fuels the existential crises that propel indigeneity activism in Jharkhand today insofar as it prompts the unending bourgeois search for a “purer,” more ethical self that claims to be the antithesis of politics yet aspires to a total politics that suffuses every individual belief, act, and idiosyncrasy. Abstract
This thesis aims to investigate the dialectics between urban planning and policy on the one hand and economic change and crises in the city of Malmö on the other, with a focus on both the city in general and the specific district of Western Harbour.
Malmö provides a (highly) fascinating place to investigate relations between urban and economic change. The city embraced the industrial path longer than many other Western cities, only to crash into a severe crisis in the 1980s and early 1990s. In the mid-1990s the city embraced a “post-industrial” strategy, and from this point onward urban changes became resolute and drastic. Less than a decade later the image of the city had fundamentally changed. But the international economy that served as foundation for the post-industrial city proved to be crisis-prone, and the 2008 crisis especially called this urban-economic arrangement into question.
This thesis answers two broad research questions: how did Malmö respond to (the “industrial” as well as the “current” economic) crises? What characterises Malmö´s transformation from an industrial to a post-industrial city and which strategies have been mobilised? Based on semi-structured interviews, written material and secondary sources (in particular municipal planning and policy documents), four theoretical papers seek to investigate these issues. I argue that Malmö met the current crisis by actively continuing to develop the “post-industrial” city that had evolved starting in the mid-1990s. The dissertation then draws parallels with the city response to the “industrial” crisis, and finds interesting similarities. Malmö, then and now, met the crisis by “building more of the same”. The dissertation also investigates the metamorphosis the city has gone through, and argues that class is a crucial component that must be understood in this process: not only in terms of distribution of money and wealth, but also in term of the production of the city. One strategy that has become important for Malmö has been to highlight “green” and “environmental” parts of the urban development to get out of the “industrial crisis”. The thesis conceptualises this in terms of a “green fix”.
Theoretically the paper builds on four (related) fields of inquiry: i) urban theory, ii) dialectics, iii) crisis theory, and iv) planning and state theory. The latter two have undergone more thorough investigation, while I argue that discussions on (Marxists’) crisis theories within human geography would benefit from a broadening of the current perspective, and that urban planning should be conceptualised as a “condensation of social relations”. Most discussions of oral history method are rooted in abstract ideas about what interviewing should be and should achieve. However, interviews are ultimately personal interactions between human beings, and as such they rarely conform to a methodological ideal. Nonetheless, oral history's complex, capricious nature is rarely addressed by its practitioners when they share their work with the world. The struggles and negotiations interviewers face while conducting interviews - ethical, political, personal - either go unacknowledged or are discussed only with trusted colleagues in informal settings. This groundbreaking collection shows that a full account of oral history methodology must include honest and rigorous analyses of actual practice, allowing us to embrace the uncertainties and remarkable opportunities that define a human-centered methodology. Here, fourteen practitioners draw connections between vastly different areas of study, including Holocaust memories, work with Aboriginal communities, Islamic studies, immigration, and conflict studies. All are united by the shared experience of encountering complex individuals with messy, difficult, and ultimately illuminating stories to tell.

This article concerns the extent to which corrupt behavior is dependent on the organizational power structure and the resources available for illegal exchange. This qualitative study is based on 42 in-depth interviews with organizational actors in different organizations in Hungary. Four core themes emerged from the analysis of the interviews: (a) isolated corruption at the bottom, (b) the middle level’s own corruption, (c) “technicization” when middle-level professionals and expert groups are used to legalize the corruption of the dominant coalition, and (d) “turning-off controls” when organizational elites intentionally deactivate internal and external controls to avoid detection.

This article presents an overview of the transition that has taken place in Arab media over the course of time. It focuses more specifically on the case of Saudi Arabia to show how television interviewers there have performed their roles throughout three different phases. The first phase covers the period when the media was still controlled by Arab governments, the second focuses on the advent of satellite and the third focuses on the aftermath of the recent series of uprisings which has become known as the Arab Spring. An examination of these three phases, which includes a discussion of some illustrative examples, will show how television interviewers have shifted from initially taking a very cautious and overtly deferential approach with interviewees, officials and public figures to adopting a more aggressive approach in the third phase.

Job interviews can be scary at the best of times. Even more so, if you're a non-native speaker still learning English, they can be a truly terrifying experience. What if the interviewer uses vocabulary you're not familiar with? How will you respond if you are asked something you haven't practiced for with your teacher beforehand? Knowing what to say, and perhaps more importantly, what NOT to say, can work miracles for your confidence levels and allow you to show your best side when it really matters.

Este trabalho pretende elaborar uma tipologia doutrinária e exemplificativa de perguntas proibidas com o objetivo particular de identificar, ainda que incompletamente, as “perguntas que puderem induzir a resposta” e as “perguntas capciosas”, cuja formulação é proibida pela legislação processual brasileira. A finalidade prática de uma tipologia de perguntas proibidas repousa no desenvolvimento de um instrumental jurídico de controle apto a reduzir a discrição judicial na aplicação das normas interpretadas dos artigos 459 do Código de Processo Civil e 212 do Código de Processo Penal, compreendidas como autênticas regras que impõem limitações probatórias de valor epistemológico e caracterizam-se pela qualidade de sobredireito (Überrecht) processual, sendo aplicáveis em todas as circunstâncias nas quais ocorre uma atividade inquiritória (judicial ou extrajudicial), de forma a regular o método pelo qual deve ser feita inquirição sobre fatos. Para tanto, recorre-se ao pensamento tipológico ou, de maneira mais específica, à catalogação de tipos reais normativos (também chamados de tipos empíricos) na elaboração de uma tipologia subordinada ao conceito de perguntas proibidas e fundada sob o critério da sugestionabilidade interrogativa. A partir dos tipos e dos subtipos catalogados, a tipologia de perguntas proibidas permite pôr em correspondência, por meio de um raciocínio analógico, a norma proibitiva e a formulação de uma determinada pergunta no âmbito da atividade inquiritória com o propósito de controlar as perguntas formuladas. Além disso, quando os tipos e os subtipos jurídicos catalogados não bastam para exercer o controle da aplicação das normas que proíbem a formulação de determinadas perguntas, são formados cânones ou tópicos jurídicos, justificáveis pela proporcionalidade ou pela razoabilidade, que, conjuntamente à tipologia, fornecerão o fundamento suficiente para que se enuncie uma regra de garantia da analogia com vistas a solver problemas jurídicos não solucionados exclusivamente com base no pensamento tipológico. Por fim, após a formação de tópicos jurídicos que complementem a tipologia de perguntas proibidas previamente elaborada, efetua-se um checklist ou um passo a passo para sistematizar as questões inerentes ao exercício de controle sobre as perguntas formuladas e, ao mesmo tempo, permitir acesso aos instrumentos argumentativos para o exercício do contraditório.


ABSTRACT:

This thesis intends to elaborate a dogmatic and exemplary typology of forbidden questions with the particular aim of identifying, albeit incompletely, the “leading questions” and “misleading questions” which are currently prohibited in Brazilian procedural legislation. The practical purpose of such typology rests on the development of a legal control framework able to diminish judicial discretion in application of rules interpreted in articles 459 of the Brazilian Code of Civil Procedure and 212 of the Brazilian Code of Criminal Procedure, understood as authentic rules that impose evidentiary constraints of epistemological value and are characterized by their overriding (Überrecht) quality, being applicable in all circumstances when a fact investigation (judicial or extrajudicial) takes place, as to regulate the method by which the fact inquiry should be done. Therefore, a typologycal thinking is used, or in a more specific way, the cataloging of real normative types (also known as empiric types) in elaboration of a typology subordinate to the concept of forbidden questions and founded on the criteria of interrogative suggestibility. Starting from the cataloged types and subtypes, through an analogical reasoning, the forbidden questions typology allows to put both the prohibitive rule and the formulation of a given question regarding the fact investigation in correspondence, with the purpose of control over the questions asked. Moreover, when the cataloged legal types and subtypes are not sufficient for exerting control over the application of rules that ban the formulation of certain questions, legal canons or topics are created, justifiable by proportionality or reasonableness, which together with the typology will supply enough rationale for an analogy-warranting rule to be enunciated with the aim of solving legal problems not solved with exclusive use of typologycal thinking. Lastly, after the formulation of legal topics that complement the forbidden questions typology previously elaborated, a checklist or step-by-step is done in order to systematize questions inherent to the exercise of control over formulated questions and at the same time allow access to argumentative tools for the exercise of the adversarial principle.

This chapter explores the applicability of the pragmeme framework (Mey 2001, Capone 2005, Allan 2010) to sociolinguistic interviews. It presents an analysis in terms of frequency of speakers' answers to the same sequence of questions –specifically, polar ques-tions– in a set of interviews in Spanish. The results show that, rather than a single polar element, most of the interviewees give an expanded polar answer, although the place of this expansion and the very presence or absence of an initial polar element may vary. The paper argues that the " expanded polar answer " is an interactional pragmeme with a dyadic nature. Due to the conventional common scene (Rancière 1995, in Mey 2001) of the interview itself, the pragmeme is made relevant by the requirements of the situation, where the interviewee is supposed to provide information. It presents four allopracts more or less central in the category according to the presence of certain formal elements.

Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) are conventionally recommended in mental health
care literature as an important way to offer holistic treatment provision to patients. This
study aims to explore multidisciplinary teamwork in contemporary mental health
settings, particularly what aids and hinders the process of multidisciplinary teamworking,
and the social work contribution in such teams. In order to attain an in-depth
exploration of these phenomena, a single case study design was employed. Within this
design, data were generated through semi-structured interviews and structured
observation of a mental health MDT in Ireland. These data were analysed using
interpretative phenomenological analysis. The research highlights how the concept of
mental illness is contested within this MDT, with the medical model dominant within
an environment of fluid working arrangements. Professional role blurring and
stereotyping were found to impact the division of labour on this team, with role
negotiation found to be an integral part of retaining a professional’s practice identity.
This research raises concerns for social work’s capacity to function within mental
health MDTs in Ireland, and highlights ways in which social work educators might
respond in order to empower Irish social workers to meet the challenges of mental
health multidisciplinary teamworking.

The aim of this paper is the study of the dynamics of political interviews in Catalan television from
the point of view of the adjacency pair question/answer. Surprisingly, the exam of a real corpus of
this discourse genre shows that the interaction between interviewer and interviewee does not always
correspond to this canonical pattern but sometimes, against the preconception of the classical schema,
the interviewee asks (different kinds of) questions to the interviewer (questions tags, rhetorical
questions, metadiscursive questions, etc.) as the other way round. This mechanism as well as other
question/answer patterns may be interesting devices to make the interview a real negotiation of
meaning and power.

This study provides an empirically based analysis of corrupt governmental networks. We conducted 45 interviews in Hungary with different organizational actors who were actually participating in corrupt transactions or at least had first-hand experiences of corruption. Given the secret nature of the topic, this article provides a unique insight into the phenomenon. Our findings show that corrupt elite cliques consciously design and coordinate multilevel structures of corrupt networks within and among organizations that involve a large amount of people. We identified the major network elements and their functions in corrupt transactions. The article also provides a typology of corrupt networks. The networks have different structural characteristics based on location of the “cash cows,” points from where the system is fed, and the actors’ positions of power. Our findings are compared with the already existing literature on dark networks, terrorist, and organized crime formations.

Questions are used as a basic investigative interviewing tool. The types and wording of questions during interviews or interrogations are critical to increase the chances of educing needed information. One problematic tool investigators use may hinder the effectiveness and efficiency to obtain requested information – the bipolar trap. The bipolar trap increases the probability of not getting the required information. Law enforcement training manuals and texts perpetuate the use of bipolar traps by including them as examples, without precautions, of properly phrased moderately closed and open-ended probes. Reducing or eliminating the use of bipolar traps and such pitfalls may assist investigators in conducting more effective and efficient interviews.
