Abstract:  Cyanoacrylate fuming is a widely used forensic tool for the development of latent fingerprints, however the mechanistic details of the reaction between the fingerprint residue and the cyanoacrylate vapor are not well understood. Here the polymerization of ethyl-cyanoacrylate vapor by sodium lactate or alanine solutions, two of the major components in fingerprint residue, has been examined by monitoring the time dependence of the mass uptake and resultant polymer molecular weight characteristics. This data provides insight into the molecular level actions in the efficient development of latent fingerprints by superglue fuming. The results show that the carboxylate moiety is the primary initiator of the polymerization process and that a basic environment inhibits chain termination while an acidic environment promotes it. The results also indicate that water cannot be the primary initiator in this forensic technique.

Bacillus subtilis spo0K mutants are blocked at the first step in sporulation. The spo0K strain was found to contain two mutations: one was linked to the trpS locus, and the other was elsewhere on the chromosome. The mutation linked to trpS was responsible for the sporulation defect (spo-). The unlinked mutation enhanced this sporulation deficiency but had no phenotype on its own. The spo- mutation was located in an operon of five genes highly homologous to the oligopeptide transport (Opp) system of Gram-negative species. Studies with toxic peptide analogues showed that this operon does indeed encode a peptide-transport system. However, unlike the Opp system of Salmonella typhimurium, one of the two ATP-binding proteins, OppF, was not required for peptide transport or for sporulation. The OppA peptide-binding protein, which is periplasmically located in Gram-negative species, has a signal sequence characteristic of lipo-proteins with an amino-terminal lipo-amino acid anchor. Cellular location studies revealed that OppA was associated with the cell during exponential growth, but was released into the medium in stationary phase. A major role of the Opp system in Gram-negative bacteria is the recycling of cell-wall peptides as they are released from the growing peptidoglycan. We postulate that the accumulation of such peptides may play a signaling role in the initiation of sporulation, and that the sporulation defect in opp mutants results from an inability to transport these peptides.

Florida’s Mental Health Act was amended in 2005 and 2006 to include licensed mental health counselors and licensed marriage and family therapists, respectively, to the list of professionals authorized to initiate emergency commitments. The present study evaluates the volume of involuntary emergency commitments by type of initiator for a 5 year period. The results indicate that allowing licensed mental health counselors and licensed marriage and family therapist to initiate emergency commitments has not been related to increased numbers of emergency commitments or a higher proportion of emergency commitments being initiated by mental health professionals. Potential policy and fiscal implications, as well as future directions for research, are discussed.

Dorian Crete and Thebes are conventionally seen by ancient sources as the originators of pederasty; modern historians see support for this view in Dorian male-centered militarism and sexual segregation in upbringing. Here athletic culture, including training, nudism, and competition, is argued to be a chief 'trigger' for the emergence of pederasty in Sparta and its relatively rapid spread to other Greek states in the seventh to sixth centuries BC. Athletic nudity, in particular, was not a device to enforce civic egalitarianism, as some have argued, but is a persistently erotic incentive that reinforces hegemonic maleness and advertises the individual's virtuous exercise of restraint. In particular, Sparta is found to be the likely source of generalized athletic nudity combined with open pederasty in the early seventh century BC. Nudism in Greek art is erotically charged and not, as others argue, simply a gender marker in the seventh century. Generalized athletic nudity spread to other Greek states emulating the successful Spartan model by the 'athletic revolution' of the early sixth century. With athletic nudity, open pederasty, again following Sparta, was fostered.

Initiation kinetics in free radical polymerization is investigated using density functional theory. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the initiation reactions are predicted, and the role of the initiators in the polymerization process is evaluated. Methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, and styrene homo-polymerizations with different initiators are studied. Reaction enthalpy and activation energy for each reaction between monomer and the radical fragments arising from the initiators have been determined. The initiation kinetic constants for all of these initiation reactions are evaluated and compared with both computational and experimental propagation kinetic constants of each monomer.

This article is the first of two articles, in a greater series, that will look at evidence indicating a connection to the spiritual stream of Rosicrucianism. In our previous two articles we have addressed, in the first, the moral questions that have arisen regarding Harry Potter’s connection to “witchcraft and wizardry” and in the second, the path of initiation as it is presented in the stories. In these previous studies we have established a basis to begin to understand the spiritual sources from which J. K. Rowling has drawn in creating the Harry Potter series. In the present article we will seek to place Rosicrucianism in a proper context to historical Christianity (and to the evolution of consciousness in general) before we attempt to show the extent to which Rosicrucianism figures into the Potter series primarily through an examination of the similarities between it and The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz —one of the original manifestos of the Rosicrucians. To accomplish this we will be focusing mainly on similar outer characteristics such as story line, plot and setting while also providing some insights into their esoteric underpinnings. This is intended to provide a foundation for a subsequent article (PART IV, Harry Potter and the Rosicrucian Stream No. 2), in which we will attempt to show how the Rosicrucian spirit suffuses the books as well as the character of Harry Potter and his two closest companions Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who together, as mentioned earlier in this series, might well represent the members of the tri-partite human soul: thinking, feeling and willing.

An argument for developing systems of self-initiation and self-development in the Yoruba origin Ifa system of knowledge, spiritual development and divination in order to make Ifa more accessible to enthusiasts beyond the current limitations, controversial practices and abuses emerging within the growing globalization of the traditional model of Ifa initiation and learning. The main text is complemented by pictures and accompanying text projecting Ifa as a spirituality centred in the intersection between the transcendent and the terrestrial, dramatized by the power of the beauty and mystery of nature.

IN THIS ESSAY WE WILL BEGIN to explore the Threefold Divine Sophia, a topic that seems to us to have an unlimited scope for exploration, as a key to meeting Christ in the etheric sphere of the Earth where human beings in our time can find their most intrinsic nature mirrored—as illumination from above alights on the virgin soul within. In an earlier article  we looked at the revelation of the divine feminine being of Isis/Sophia “hidden behind” Rudolf Steiner’s Foundation Stone Meditation, the text of which speaks ostensibly of the spiritual foundations of the human being discoverable in the masculine Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In that study we hinted at the threefold nature of Sophia when we looked at one of the fundamental edicts of ancient Egyptian mystery schools inscribed beneath the veiled statue of Isis at Sais: “I am the All: I am the Past, Present and Future, no mortal can lift my veil.”  We also considered the “Great Portent” revealed to St. John, recorded in chapter twelve of his Revelations, a woman who has a threefold constitution: the moon under her feet, the sun illuminating her body and her head crowned with twelve stars. In this essay we will explicitly address ourselves to the threefold nature of the Divine Sophia as a basis for a direct experience with her and the Christ as they appear in our time, in the life-body of the Earth.

The main aim of shamanic initiation among the Yanomami people of the Upper Orinoco River region in Venezuela is the metamorphosis of the human body into a cosmic body, or what I term “corporeal cosmogenesis.” During the initiatory ordeal, the neophyte undergoes an intense experience of death through dismemberment by the spirits and subsequent rebirth, thus overcoming the human condition and becoming an individual living spirit. But, at the same time, he becomes a “collection” of other spirits who leave their natural habitats—located on the mountaintops and in the forest—and move into the initiate's body, which becomes their abode. As the candidate surrenders his soul and humanness to the spirits, the latter become his personal allies and sources of power while imbuing the shaman's postmortem ego with certain properties that can best be described in holographic terms. After the shaman's biological death, his personal spirits become disembodied again and disperse back into the forest and on the mountaintops. When the shaman dies, his soul multiplies, as each of the disembodied spirits becomes a carrier of the shaman's soul image. In this way, through initiations, the shaman becomes a part of a dynamic cosmic circuity, as his hekura can be called upon to invade the bodies of new shamans, and start a cosmogonic initiatory act anew.

Frequently, most of the literature that is studied in schools or universities analyses classic texts by authors such as Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, or Robinson Crusoe.

In the academic field, apart from theological studies, not much importance is given to literary and poetic works that derive from metaphysical concepts. And it is usually assumed that this is a way of praising God, or it is only classified as 'metaphysical-religious' literature since the message of these works, being too abstract or religious or occult, is not taken really into account to the right extent. Hence, metaphysical literature then has only a secondary or almost non-existent role in school curricula.

In my opinion, metaphysical concepts behind a literary text are - indirectly and sometimes even directly - the fundamental part of the text. But the reader does not grasp the real meaning, or he stops only at the external, literal expression, without trying to change the reading perspective. One stops only at what is exposed without thinking about what might lie behind each written word. And no other interpretative key is offered.

This leads to the following questions: What does the metaphysical concept or theme mean in poetry? Who are the English metaphysical poets and what does their metaphysical poetry represent and how do they represent it? Which forms or symbols are used to express their thoughts directly or indirectly? And above all, what are the origins, symbols, and concepts hidden behind metaphysical poetry?


We will see some authors such as the Vaughan brothers, and several metaphysical English poets in relation to religious concepts and characters such as Jesus, Gustavo Adolfo Rol, and especially the divine comedy.

The field of English for specific purposes (ESP), which addresses the communicative needs and practices of particular professional or occupational groups, has developed rapidly in the past forty years to become a major force in English language teaching and research. ESP draws its strength from an eclectic theoretical foundation and a commitment to research-based language education which seeks to reveal the constraints of social contexts on language use and the ways learners can gain control over these. In this chapter, I will briefly point to some of the major ideas and practices that currently influence ESP, focusing on needs analysis, ethnography, critical approaches, contrastive rhetoric, social constructionism, and discourse analysis. I then go on to look briefly at some of the effects ESP has had on language teaching and research, arguing that it has encouraged teachers to highlight communication rather than language, to adopt a research orientation to their work, to employ collaborative pedagogies, to be aware of discourse variation, and to consider the wider political implications of their role. Together these features of ESP practice emphazise a situated view of literacy and underline the applied nature of the field.

This academic work aims at analyzing a three-stage hero's journey – departure, initiation, return – by the example of Virginia Woolf's novel's protagonist "Orlando". Methodology, which I use here is Joseph Campbell's theory of monomyth, which describes above-mentioned stages and their impact on the development of hero's psyche. While analyzing I will be using tools created by Carl Gustav Jung's analytical psychology. Reaching, discovering and maintaining self-respect by getting lost and finding oneself – this is, in my view, the main subject of "Orlando" and the main subject of Campbell's monomyth theory. Mythological storytelling is one of the methods of psyche's integration. It allows for a more complete and more multidimensional connection with reality. I will take a closer look at this method in the introduction and the first chapter. The second chapter is dedicated to the portrayal of Joseph Campbell's theory by bringing closer the three-stages of hero's journey. In the last chapter, I will read the Orlando's – poet and writer – journey through the lenses of the monomyth theory.

Breast-feeding is the superior infant feeding method from birth, with research consistently demonstrating its numerous short- and long-term health benefits for both mother and infant. As a global recommendation the WHO advises that mothers should exclusively breast-feed for the first 6-months of life, thus delaying the introduction of solids during this time. Historically, Irish breast-feeding initiation rates have remained strikingly low in comparison with international data and there has been little improvement in breast-feeding duration rates. There is wide geographical variation in terms of breast-feeding initiation both internationally and in Ireland. Some of these differences in breast-feeding rates may be associated with differing socio-economic characteristics. A recent cross-sectional prospective study of 561 pregnant women attending a Dublin hospital and followed from the antenatal period to 6 months post partum has found that 47% of the Irish-national mothers initiated breast-feeding, while only 24% were still offering 'any' breast milk to their infants at 6 weeks. Mothers' positive antenatal feeding intention to breast-feed is indicated as one of the most important independent determinants of initiation and 'any' breast-feeding at 6 weeks, suggesting that the antenatal period should be targeted as an effective time to influence and affect mothers' attitudes and beliefs pertaining to breast-feeding. These results suggest that the 'cultural' barrier towards breast-feeding appears to still prevail in Ireland and consequently an environment that enables women to breast-feed is far from being achieved. Undoubtedly, a shift towards a more positive and accepting breast-feeding culture is required if national breast-feeding rates are to improve.
