Imigrantes chineses

O objetivo deste artigo é entender o tráfico de coolies, os movimentos emigratórios da Índia e da China e a questão da diversidade de formas de trabalho compulsório em diversos espaços da América no século XIX. Pretende-se, ainda, realizar uma apreciação dos números da emigração de chineses e indianos para a América e a inserção dos primeiros em diversos espaços do continente, especialmente a partir da década de 1840 até o final do século XIX. Para finalizar, o artigo procura relacionar a crise da escravidão no espaço Atlântico, a reorganização do mercado mundial de mão de obra e as políticas imperiais de Portugal e Grã-Bretanha

ABSTRACT: This article aims to analyze Brazilian imperial elites’ discourses against Chinese immigration to Brazil between 1850 and 1890. Those speeches were informed by a wide variety of prejudices, which included a hierarchization of human races and Eurocentric notions of progress. In their writings about Chinese immigration, intellectuals, politicians, physicians, and farmers condemned the arrival of immigrants to Brazil claiming that immigrants would bring addictions, uncivilized habits, and further miscegenation, which would “degenerate even more” the national racial type. As historical sources, this article deploys books, articles in specialized scientific journal, newspapers articles, reports, and annals of the 1878 Agricultural Congress; the article seeks a deeper understanding of claims made against Chinese immigration in a larger context of debates about European immigration, workforce crisis in the coffee farming sector, and the formation of national identity. Claims against Chinese immigration demonstrate to what degree colonization was linked to the creation of a Europeanized national identity. The national immigration policies were simultaneously perceived as colonizing and civilizing efforts. These policies revealed a political elite’s attempt at homogenizing the nation, thus Europeanizing and whitewashing Brazil.

RESUMO: O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar os discursos promovidos pelas elites imperiais brasileiras contra a imigração chinesa para o Brasil entre 1850 e 1890. Estes discursos eram informados por uma gama de preconceitos, baseados na hierarquização das raças humanas e percepções eurocêntricas de progresso. Em seus escritos sobre a imigração chinesa, intelectuais, políticos, médicos e fazendeiros condenavam a vinda de imigrantes para o Brasil alegando que estes trariam vícios, costumes incivilizados e se miscigenariam, “degenerando ainda mais” o tipo racial nacional. Utilizo, como documentos históricos: livros, artigos em periódicos especializados, artigos de jornais, relatórios e os anais do Congresso Agrícola de 1878, buscando compreender os discursos avessos à imigração chinesa no contexto maior dos debates sobre imigração europeia, crise de mão de obra na agricultura cafeeira e a formação da identidade nacional. Os discursos contrários à imigração chinesa demonstram o quanto as questões de colonização estavam ligadas à construção de uma identidade nacional europeizada. As políticas nacionais de imigração eram percebidas ao mesmo tempo como colonizadoras e civilizatórias, dirigidas por uma elite preocupada em homogeneizar a nação, europeizando e branqueando o Brasil.

This paper works on the presence of Chinese workers in Brazil in d. João VI era. From the macro view, it aims at understanding the reasons of the arrival of the man power as a resetting strategy of geopolitical importance of the Portuguese empire, with its country side metropolis in Rio de Janeiro. And links this conjuncture particularity to the global problems that announced the tragic end of the traffic of African slaves and inputs of the compulsory work. From the micro view, in aims at detailing the agreements entered into between the parties, so it is possible to learn the actual expectations of the history subjects. Finally, we analyze the barriers and the struggles of the Chinese so their wills were imposed, were they registered or not in the documents they signed.
