This article addresses the complementary work of psychological notions and courts in handling suicides occurring in the course of military service. We suggest the category of mutuality between individuals and social settings as an analytic perspective for the study of suicide, illuminating not only how suicide is constructed, but also theorizing the effects of this construction. Our findings rest on content analysis of 34 verdicts on cases of suicide occurring within the Israeli military. In these verdicts, mostly issued to resolve disputes between bereaved parents and state authorities, Israeli courts decided on the causes of death and the responsibilities of the military and state for soldiers’ suicides. Courts base their decisions on the ambiguous psychological concept of suicidal individuals, explaining self-demise as the result of an internal malaise and avoid addressing the coercive circumstances within which Israeli soldiers operate. By conclusively linking self-demise to suicidality, courts produce an idea of death-seeking soldiers, who fail to ensure their own well-being as well as to defend the common good. Courts render the difficulties encountered during military service mental and personal, thereby contracting, standardizing, and individualizing the idea of mutuality between soldiers, families, and state. To explain these repercussions of juridification and psychologization processes, we draw attention to Durkheim’s conceptualization of contractual obligations and non-contractual sentiments. We elaborate on the Durkheimian connection between solidarity and suicide, by highlighting the outcomes of their interrelated management, especially the courts’ shaping of thin mutuality when arbitrating suicide disputes. Adopting psychological reasoning and assessing personal responsibility, courts potentially fail in their constitutive role of discussing matters of collective concerns.

The rainfall Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) relationship is one of the most commonly used tools for various engineering projects against floods. It is important in water resources engineering, either for planning, designing and operating of water resource projects. For estimation of runoff especially for urban areas short duration rainfalls are necessary. Developing countries like Bangladesh short duration rainfall is scarce and data available is mostly for daily rainfall data. In such cases, design rainfall is estimated by approximation and thus leading to frequent failure of drainage network. The purpose of this paper is to develop an empirical formula to estimate design rainfall intensity for seven major cities based on simple scaling properties. This method allows for the estimation of the design value of rainfall of selected return period and durations shorter than a day by using only the daily data. The assumption of simple scaling implies in direct relationships between the moments of different orders and the rainfall durations, which can be used to derive IDF relation¬ships from larger durations.

Books written on military issues are typically divided between those seeking new theories of warfare and those offering a historical analysis of bloody conflicts. Two Steps Ahead is among the few offering both. The first part of the book provides a framework for thinking of Operational Maneuvering Systems and Special Operations. The second part of the book takes us through the series of Special Operations designed and led by Major General Orde Charles Wingate - from the Special Night Squads’ dealings with the Arab Revolt in Eretz Israel during the late 1930s; through countering the Italian offensive in Abyssinia 1941; to the Burma Campaign 1942-1944 (in which he found his death). Each phase in the evolution of Wingate’s ideas is a masterpiece of adapting an Operational Concept to a unique context.

Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves are commonly used in water resources projects and hydrological analyses. One of the most important requirements for creating IDF curves is the actual distribution of rainfall intensity during the period of rainfall, but usually short-duration rainfall records are rare in arid regions while daily rainfall data are available. Hydrologists can generate short-duration rainfall data from daily rainfall data through using the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) standard synthetic rainfall distributions. The main purpose of this paper is to show the procedure to be followed in developing the IDF curves using the daily rainfall data recorded at the Hurghada weather station. Frequency analysis of the observed rainfall records was performed using HyfranPlus software. The gamma distribution is the most widely accepted probability distribution in this research.

Drawing from their history of pro-Lebanon military support and origins associated therein, their formal entrance into the Lebanese government in 1992 and subsequent political actions and policies, and their social welfare and infrastructure based programs; Hezbollah has been able to effectively establish itself as a significant and influential faction to become a force of moderate Islamic representation for the people of Lebanon.

Galei Tzahal, the radio station of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), went on the air in 1950, broadcasting from the center of Israel to the general public. The station eventually became significant and highly esteemed, enjoying great popularity among listeners. The object of this article is to analyze the characteristics of the station in its early years. Lacking significant documentation of the programs broadcast in the first decades, as well as systematic audio recordings of the station’s broadcasts, this article is based on documentsfound in the IDF archives, including letters, scripts of radio plays, polls, and planned lineups, as well as samplesof the station’s broadcasting schedulesin the 1950s and 1960s, as published in the Israeli press.

This article uses a constructivist analysis to consider the social construction of identity and the Israeli military action in Lebanon in 2006. Strands of meaning, constructive of a collective sense of self, emerged out of historical continuities, interacted and were made meaningful in relation to each other around the issue of the Hezbollah threat in 2006. They framed, contextualised and constituted that policy issue to form a situated and contingent identity of the possible, within which the policy decisions that produced the second Lebanon War were taken. Whilst a body of work has resulted from engagement with this conflict, and a well established literature discusses Israeli identity, little has been done to bring the two together and consider in detail the role of identity in constructing the 2006 war as possible and desirable for Israel. This is the focus and contribution of this article. Domestically, the institutional context of the 2006 Knesset elections revealed a national identity in which the multi-faceted vulnerability identity and Fighting Jew identity were salient, interacting strands. The narratives of ordeal, existential threat, and self-reliance acted to increase the power of the Fighting Jew identity, predicated on a faith in military solutions to threats. These ideas came up against and were rearticulated in the context of the global “War on Terror” to make the war in 2006 both possible and desirable.

בשנים האחרונות צה"ל מגדיר את עצמו במונחים יותר ויותר מקצועיים. נוסף על החילות, שהגדרתם הפרופסיונלית הייתה ברורה עוד מראשיתם (חיל המודיעין, חיל הרפואה), תופסים לאחרונה חילות תומכי לחימה נוספים, ובהם חיל הלוגיסטיקה וחיל השלישות, את תפקידם באופן ממוקד וברור יותר, ומפתחים זיקה לדיסציפלינות אקדמיות ולמקצועות אזרחיים. גם חיל החינוך והנוער בחן בשני העשורים האחרונים מחדש את מטרותיו ואת הגדרותיו המקצועיות מתוך מגמה דומה. התהליך הזה הוליד שלל נרחב של תורות חיליות, סיכומים ומסמכי מדיניות. עיון בחיבורים הללו יוצר רושם מורכב בנוגע לתפקידו של קצין החינוך. מעֵבר לתנודתיות הרבה בהגדרות - קצין הסברה, קצין תרבות, קצין חינוך - קשה להבחין בדגם אחד ברור העולה מהם. במאמר זה אבקש לטעון כי בבסיס תפקיד קצין החינוך עומד מתח בסיסי ששורשיו בעבר הרחוק בין מודל של איש חינוך למודל של אחראי שירותים ותרבות. לניסיון להפחית את המתח הזה יש משמעות אסטרטגית בנוגע לעתידו של חיל החינוך: בעידן של התמקצעות ולנוכח ביקורת הולכת וגוברת על הפרטת המענה החינוכי לגופים אזרחיים, יהיה החיל חייב לאפיין בצורה טובה יותר את דמות הקצין, ולבחון בביקורתיות את הפרדיגמות הקיימות.

ABstrAct: Women have long served in the Israel Defense Forces, notwithstanding strong opposition by the Chief Rabbinate. In the twenty-first century, approximately 25 percent of female graduates of Israel's religious high school system enlist, despite social disapproval. Israel's Orthodox community has largely ignored the issue in the past. Recently, however, rabbis and public figures within the religious community have acknowledged the reality of women's conscription and have shown some willingness to address it. Although religious female soldiers are still atypical, they are no longer viewed as the anathema they once were. This article presents a possible model for this legitimation as a social process. It then describes the relationship between religious women, military service, and conscription in Israel, concluding with a suggestion about broader contexts within which this change can be viewed.

While media are the primary sources of information about foreign events, we know very little about how local television news, the most frequently watched news in America, cover foreign events and how their coverage relate to public attitudes. Intensity-Duration-Frequency curve is a graphical representation of the likelihood of a specific average rainfall intensity occurring. It is calculated using a mathematical function that links rainfall intensity to duration and frequency. These curves are extensively used in hydrology and civil engineering for flood forecasts and urban drainage design. In water resources projects and hydrological assessments, intensityduration-frequency (IDF) curves are often utilized. The actual distribution of rainfall intensity over the period of rainfall is one of the most critical prerequisites for producing IDF curves, yet short-duration rainfall records are rare in arid places where daily rainfall data is available. Hydrologists can use the Natural Resources Conservation Service's (NRCS) standard synthetic rainfall distributions to generate short-duration rainfall data from daily rainfall data. The main purpose of this research is to demonstrate the technique for creating the IDF curve using daily rainfall data collected from the Al Qusir weather station.
