Girolamo Savonarola

The tale of a meeting between Leonardo and Savonarola in the summer of 1495, later reported by Vasari (1550 and 1568) but confirmed by a memorandum remained in Leonardo's possession (Codex Atlanticus, f. 628 r), which refers explicitly to a "mission" assigned to him (presumably by Ludovico Sforza) to go to Florence, in order to get (through a competent mediator, probably Bernardo Rucellai) a detailed report about the new political rules promoted by the friar, lends credibility to a hypothesis of comparison between their anthropological conceptions, especially as they emerge from their "transfigured" use of the prophetic semantics, despite their shared repudiation of astrological quackery. If, on the one
hand, Savonarola's preaching does not have any properly predictive character, in terms of intentional "divination", standing rather as a projection or representation of the contingency of the current days, in purely political terms, Leonardo's riddles, which he literally called "prophecies", on the other hand - and similarly - transform the genre of presages or predictions into entertainment tools for courtly audiences, that, however, in some cases, become a vehicle for a critical evaluation of the troubles of contemporary society. The likelihood that, on the occasion of his convocation in Florence in 1495, Leonardo was able to listen to Savonarola's sermons, so steeped in apocalyptic prophecy, may provide an
explanation to the appearance of writings called "prophecies", among his notes, just in the last five years of the century. Their underlying vision of man, clearly pessimistic, offers significant points of contact with the negative anthropology advocated by Savonarola's preaching, which also makes use of animal apology, especially in the conceptual and ideological interpretation of the "anti-human" conflictuality among men, that makes them "beasts" towards themselves, in a sort of anticipation of Hobbes' famous motto homo homini
lupus.

Paolo Luotto (Villafranca D'Asti, 1855-1897), fu allievo di Carlo Cipolla. E' ricordato soprattutto come autore di una monumentale monografia su Girolamo Savonarola. Il ritorno di interesse intorno alla sua figura coincide con le celebrazioni del quinto centenario dalla morte di Savonarola.

For the last 2,500 years literature has been attacked, booed, and condemned, often for the wrong reasons and occasionally for very good ones. ‘The Hatred of Literature’ examines the evolving idea of literature as seen through the eyes of its adversaries: philosophers, theologians, scientists, pedagogues, and even leaders of modern liberal democracies. From Plato to C. P. Snow to Nicolas Sarkozy, literature’s haters have questioned the value of literature―its truthfulness, virtue, and usefulness―and have attempted to demonstrate its harmfulness.

Literature does not start with Homer or Gilgamesh, William Marx says, but with Plato driving the poets out of the city, like God casting Adam and Eve out of Paradise. That is its genesis. From Plato the poets learned for the first time that they served not truth but merely the Muses. It is no mere coincidence that the love of wisdom (philosophia) coincided with the hatred of poetry. Literature was born of scandal, and scandal has defined it ever since.

In the long rhetorical war against literature, Marx identifies four indictments―in the name of authority, truth, morality, and society. This typology allows him to move in an associative way through the centuries. In describing the misplaced ambitions, corruptible powers, and abysmal failures of literature, anti-literary discourses make explicit what a given society came to expect from literature. In this way, anti-literature paradoxically asserts the validity of what it wishes to deny. The only threat to literature’s continued existence, Marx writes, is not hatred but indifference.

«Secondo la diversità de’ tempi […] mutarsi e trovarsi novi modi di vivere non solamente non è inconveniente, ma è cosa necessaria». Così il Savonarola il 16 dicembre 1494, ossia un mese dopo che la cacciata di Piero de’ Medici da Firenze ha segnato la fine del regime mediceo e una settimana prima delle votazioni che avrebbero istaurato il Consiglio Maggiore.
Questo contributo intende illustrare come il predicatore domenicano abbia colto per primo l’importanza del contesto storico nella riflessione politica. Prima del Machiavelli e del Guicciardini, è stato lui ad aver iniziato una riflessione sul modo migliore di governare Firenze, riflessione che si sarebbe protratta fino al progressivo avvenimento del principato a partire del 1537.
Sin da quando i fiorentini sono costretti a pensare al modo in cui avrebbero governato la città, Savonarole vede nelle loro esitazioni nonché nella discesa di Carlo VIII nella penisola la manifestazione della volontà divina e la confermazione della propria missione di profeta cominciata negli anni ’80. D’ora in poi il Savonarola avrebbe considerato i fiorentini non più solo in quanto assemblea di cristiani che si sarebbe dovuta pentire dai peccati ma anche come cittadini che avrebbero dovuto trovare un modo di governo adatto alla nuova situazione — quella delle guerre d’Italia appunto.
Basandosi sulla diagnosi di una città malata per via della mala educazione che i fiorentini hanno ereditato dagli avi (diagnosi che verrà fatta anche dal Machiavelli nonché dal Guicciardini), Savonarola spiega come, di fronte alla situazione inedita, anzi straordinaria, sia necessario capire che i tempi sono cambiati, che i modi vecchi di governare non sono più adatti e che bisogna cercare soluzioni politiche adatte a quella nuova «diversità de’ tempi». Non potendo il nuovo ordine essere pensato a priori, la riflessione politica dovrà poggiare sul contesto storico. 
Nasce così un pensiero politico risolutamente prammatico che si nutre dell’analisi delle circostanze storiche e in particolare degli avvenimenti del 1494. Cosicché la scelta e la difesa  del “governo civile” da parte del Savonarola non è dettata da mera teoria ma dall’attenzione alla storia presente. Non parla mai «assolutamente» ma «secundum quid», cioè rapportandosi sempre alla realtà fiorentina, quella dell’ hic e del nunc.
Quel realismo politico si svolge nell’ambito di una logica della speranza, lungi da ogni forma di utopia. Per il Savonarola, che si fida del tempo divino, c’è sempre modo che i fiorentini possano fare a meno del governo tirannico.

In Romola (1862) George Eliot investigates the complex interplay between the female self and the surrounding cultural stifling milieu to explore the limitations and possibilities of femininity in Renaissance Florence. The author vests the eponymous heroine with an urgent desire to overthrow the socio-political structures founded on male patriarchal values, dominant in Florence and unfitting to accommodate women’s talents, thus echoing the debate about women’s place in mid-Victorian androcentric society. Romola’s aspiration to moral freedom, a vocation alternative to marriage and childbearing, and to an intellectual autonomy unmolested by a long-established patriarchal system, is crushed by the burden of family traditions, past obligations and social responsibilities. RESUMEN:
En la presente investigación se trabajará en torno a la relación entre religión y política en Nicolás Maquiavelo. En su obra, encontramos que la religión tiene una doble función para el autor: por un lado, una función privada; por el otro, una función pública. Como expresión de lo anterior, se analizará la figura bíblica del rey David a partir de sus textos políticos (El príncipe y Discursos sobre la primera década de Tito Livio), y particularmente, el breve discurso Exhortación a la penitencia. Este último discurso ha sido poco trabajado en sus argumentos teórico-políticos y las consecuencias que se desprenden sobre pensar la relación entre religión y política en el autor.
En esta investigación, sostendré que en Exhortación a la penitencia, y en particular, desde el análisis de la persona de David, se abre el campo de conocimiento sobre la relación entre religión y política en la obra maquiaveliana. En ese sentido, la pregunta que se abordará es ¿qué nos puede enseñar la figura de David sobre la relación entre religión y política en Maquiavelo?

La han atacado, denunciado, condenado, con todos los pretextos, bajo todos los regímenes, con las mejores o las peores intenciones, por malas razones y a veces inclusos por buenas. Exiliaron a los poetas, quemaron sus libros -o simplemente expresaron el deseo de hacerlo. Son 2500 años en que la literatura está sujeta a todas las críticas ya todas las acusaciones de parte de filósofos y teólogos, de curas y pedagogos, de científicos y sociólogos, de reyes, de emperadores e incluso de presidentes.

Following the flight of the Medici at the end of the 15th century, Sandro Botticelli fell under the influence of Girolamo Savonarola. If the aging artist did not blindly abide by the injunctions that the prophet of the Florentine republic delivered to painters, he was not impervious, however, to the anathemas uttered against poets. He who once entered, with his Spring, in competition with poems by the members of Lorenzo the Magnificent's inner circle, now strived, with his Mystic Nativity, to equal Saint John's prophetic Word. Grounded in a literal meaning whose substance is spelt out in an inscription in ancient Greek running above the painting, he therein developed the three facets of the spiritual signification of exegesis: allegorical, tropological and anagogical. The only work ever signed and dated by the painter, this late canvas thus takes on a prophetic dimension, and presents itself as a vision of the fulfillment of chapter 12 in the Apocalypse.

On 23 May 1498 Girolamo Savonarola, one of the most spell-binding figures of the Italian Renaissance, was publicly burned at the stake on the main piazza of Florence on trumped-up charges of heresy and sedition. Thus ended the friar’s meteoric rise to power and his unprecedented influence over Florentine society. Though his ashes were unceremoniously dumped into the River Arno the moment the cinders had died away, the fire of his teachings could not be extinguished, nor could Florentines forget the rivetting preacher from Ferrara who, in four short years, had turned their city upside down. Neither could Italians nor, more generally, European reformers, for they soon turned Savonarola into a prophet of renewal and into a symbol of the struggle against corruption. Whether he was one or the other or neither, is still very much under debate.

This collection of texts from Savonarola’s extensive body of works seeks to provide the English reader with a variety of entry points into this controversial figure. With samples from his letters to his poems, from his sermons to his pastoral works, it more than doubles the number of Savonarola’s works currently available in English. In so doing, it makes his teachings that much more accessible to wide range of scholars and students alike.

In un celebre passo dei "Discorsi" (I 11) Machiavelli pone in rilievo il paradossale contrasto tra la cultura ed esperienza dei Fiorentini e la fiducia da loro mostrata nella virtù profetica di Savonarola. L'articolo intende analizzare i termini con cui l’autore si esprime su tale tematica, anche attraverso il riscontro con analoghi giudizi dei contemporanei e, in particolare, in riferimento all’ipotesi di una valenza ironica, e forse intenzionalmente contradditoria, di detta riflessione.

Tra la fine del XV e l'inizio del XVI secolo, Leonardo intreccia la speculazione scientifica sui fenomeni meteorologici e sulla turbolenza atmosferica con una fascinazione letteraria e filosofica sul tema dell'ineluttabile disfacimento della materia nei processi di rigenerazione della natura, dando luogo alle sue ultime mirabili "invenzioni", immani e inusitate visioni di distruzione, anticipate da testi profetici in cui si pronostica la fine dei tempi, sulla spinta dei traumatici eventi politici contemporanei.

In the light of the Christological tension between spiraculo/Spirito in Princ xxvi, which is also found also in one of Savonarola’s Homilies on Ex- odus, this essay proposes a Messianic, secularizing reading of the final Ex- hortatio of Machiavelli’s Prince, culminating in an exaltation of the pope. The whole text of the Prince hinges on this ambiguous Prince, who is both a sacral and temporal figure, called to become Italy’s political saviour. From that, a papal reading of Moses follows as an armed prophet, opposing Savon- arola as the disarmed prophet. Lastly, this essay demonstrates how the term mandragola (mandrake) was commonly used by Savonarola’s enemies, as it is shown by one of Savonarola’s homilies on Exodus, heard by Machiavelli. The term was used as an offence linked to the red crosses, distinctive signs of the reformation proposed by the friar. This shows the symbolic and political magnitude of Machiavelli’s Mandragola, which ironically alludes to Savona- rola’s age and celebrates the Medicean pope’s advent.

*** [ITALIANO] Nell’ambito della lirica italiana, le rime di Girolamo Savonarola sono una delle testimonianze più alte della poesia tardo quattrocentesca. La voce è quella di un profeta calamitoso e di un poeta equivoco (riscrittore di Petrarca) che vuole dare conto all’uditore di ieri, come al lettore di oggi, dei propri moniti e del proprio viatico spirituale. Composti presumibilmente tra il 1470 e il 1485, nella Bologna di santa Caterina de’ Vigri e nella Firenze di Lorenzo il Magnifico, questi versi testimoniano l’impetuosa storia di un’anima che annientava le potenze mondane per incamminarsi all’eternità. *** [ENGLISH] In the field of Italian poetry, the poems of Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498) are among the most inspired and novel of the late fifteenth century. The voice is simultaneously that of a prophet foreseeing calamity and that of an equivocal poet (a rewriter of Petrarch) who wants to convey to the listener of his own day, and to readers of all times, his warnings and his own spiritual experience. Composed presumably between 1470 and 1485, in the Bologna of St Caterina de’ Vigri and the Florence of Lorenzo the Magnificent, these poems testify to the author’s impetuous spirit, which sought to annihilate earthly powers to follow a heavenly path. With profound erudition and clarity of language, Giona Tuccini offers to scholars and other interested readers a complete and updated guide to Savonarola’s poems.

The first part of this article examines different types of portraits in the guise of religious figures that came into existence, and sets forth the reasons why the appearance of these disguised portraits in a sacred context was held in abhorrence in early modern times. Various comments on this phenomenon by the most prominent theologians and polemecists of the sixteenth and seventeenth century (Murner, Savonarola, Erasmus, Molanus, Borromeo, Paleotti, among others) are drawn together in order to analyse the overall nature of the condemnation of portraits in the guise of holy figures. The scope of this paper is confined to the judgement of these particular portraits by ecclesiastic writers in Europe between 1500-1650, and more distinctively, to the restrictions imposed on portraits by local church authorities in the Southern Netherlands. In the second part these regulations will be connected to actual portrait conventions in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges. Special attention is paid to the the Provincial Council of Mechlin of 1607 and subsequent synods and decrees that tried to put an end to the dipiction of private persons as part of a religious painting that served as an altarpiece.

Un libro innovativo che non tralascia neppure le ultime opere scoperte come le controverse Bella Principessa e Gioconda “Isleworth”, e il recentissimo quanto straordinario Salvator Mundi.

This article accounts for the surprising final chapter of Niccolò Machiavelli’s Prince by situating it in the context of the apocalyptic fervor that gripped Italy at the turn of the sixteenth century. In Florence, the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola was at the center of this enthusiastic movement. The final chapter of The Prince, the article suggests, is an apocalyptic exhortation that reiterates Savonarola’s message in secular terms. Machiavelli gravitates toward this apocalyptic solution because he has failed to render the apparent contingency of the political world intelligible by containing it with analytical categories, ordering it with general rules, or analogizing it with metaphors for fortune. Offering evidence of the failure of The Prince to deliver on these epistemological aspirations, the article argues that the work’s concluding chapter amounts to a final attempt to render the variability and contingency of the city’s political situation intelligible by fashioning it into an apocalyptic story with which Florentines would have been intimately familiar.

Botticelli’s unfinished Adoration, in the Uffizi Gallery, deserves appreciation not only for artistic qualities but also as a remarkably poignant revelation of its times: that is my focus here. Botticelli’s subject, more contemporary than simply the Biblical story of the Magi, and perhaps too the painting’s incompletion, are closely linked to the grandiose, ultimately disappointing Italian mission of King Charles VIII and are entwined with Florentine religion and politics. Charles himself, unremarked so far by art historians, is a principal in the painting, as the “second Charlemagne” and “new Cyrus”, “sent by God”, “sword of the Lord” (gladius domini), “liberator”, agent of a rebirth and universal triumph of the Christian Church -- which never happened.

My aim is not only to propose and argue a new interpretation of Botticelli’s unfinished Adoration, but to evoke through his painting, in some small way, the human emotions, fervent beliefs, fears, hopes and disappointments of individual Florentines living through those few wonderful, terrible, liberating, controversial, mystical and mystifying years.

Il saggio prende in esame il ruolo svolto da Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola come editore delle opere di Giovanni Pico. Insigni studiosi, come Eugenio Garin, Cesare Vasoli, Stephen A. Farmer, hanno ipotizzato che Gianfrancesco, il quale dopo la morte dello zio Giovanni riuscì a venire in possesso della maggior parte degli scritti lasciati inediti da quello, potrebbe aver alterato o riscritto alcuni testi (in particolare, le incompiute Disputationes adversu astrologiam divinatricem) allo scopo di presentere Giovanni come un discepolo di Girolamo Savonarola. Questo saggio cerca di indagare su questa ipotesi lungo due direttrici: un esame dell'epistolario di Gianfrancesco,  per cercare di stabilire come egli descrive la relazione con lo zio e le diverse tappe del lavoro editoriale in cui era impegnato; e un confronto tra le Disputationes e il libro quinto del De rerum praenotione, entrambi dedicati alla confutazione di magia e astrologia.

Relazione scritta nel corso degli studi per il conseguimento della Laurea Magistrale in Storia e Società inerente alcune problematiche delle Guerre d'Italia nel Cinquecento. La visione proposta è legata, più che agli eventi bellici, alla diplomazia del periodo relativo alla discesa di Carlo VIII di Valois in Italia e alle conseguenze di tale episodio storico.

Le riflessioni filosofiche di età rinascimentale assegnano alla facoltà dell’immaginazione un ruolo centrale, indagandone la natura, i poteri e i limiti. Il De imaginatione di Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola (1469-1533) rappresenta un esito originale in questo panorama, perseguendo congiuntamente un programma esegetico e una prospettiva apologetica tramite l’indagine degli errori della fantasia e le possibilità di una sua elevazione spirituale. Il volume offre una nuova edizione critica e la prima traduzione italiana dell’opera, corredate da un ampio saggio che ne approfondisce i contenuti in rapporto ai pensatori contemporanei che più influiscono nella composizione – Giovanni Pico, Ficino e Savonarola – e alle fonti antiche e medievali.
