moreThe essay presents an unknown Via Crucis preserved in the Church of Saint Francis in Sarnano, one of the most ancient settlements of the Order of the Franciscans in the Marche Region, which became the property of the Order of the Philippines in 1820. The series is composed of 14 small paintings on canvas and they are attributed to the painter Cristoforo Unterperger (Cavalese/Tn, 1732 – Rome, 1798) through the analogy that we can see between two of his paintings, the Flagellation of Christ and the Agony in the garden, now in the Civic Art Gallery “Fortunato Duranti” in Montefortino. In the text is examined the series Via Crucis in correlation with the other works by Cristoforo Unterperger, artist who was mainly active in Rome, and also identify some important people perhaps implicated in the acquisition, Ignazio Cantalamessa (Ascoli Piceno, 1796 – 1855), the architect who restored the church of Saint Francis, and the artist and collector Fortunato Duranti (Montefortino, 1787-1863).
