ABSTRACT
In the thirteenth century the mass cycle became established as a sacred musical form. By the end of the twentieth century the politicised concert mass had overshadowed it. Surprisingly, despite becoming a significant contributor to the Western art music repertoire, the concert mass has never attracted serious scholarship. While individual concert masses have been the subject of some studies, the form itself has received only limited attention, and never been comprehensively defined. This anomaly is addressed here by investigating three main topic areas: the variety of attitudes to sacred music within the Roman Catholic Church, the changing social, political and religious nature of Western societies, and the text of the mass itself. Focusing particularly on the twentieth century, this study brings together selected sources that span eight centuries to show that at each stage of the transition of the liturgical mass to its politicised form it has reflected changing attitudes towards religion in Western societies. While analysis of elements of key transitional concert masses provides the most substantive evidence, as a work of historical musicology that deals with religious as well as musical changes, the research of historians, sociologists and religious studies scholars, among others, has also been drawn upon. In combination, these primary and secondary sources reveal that it was the convergence of a range of human-centred impulses that brought about the establishment of first the concert mass in the later eighteenth century and then the politicised concert mass in the twentieth century. Whereas Renaissance masses presented God to humankind, and concertised masses presented humankind to God, politicised concert masses present humankind to humankind.

Joachim Gliński należy do słabo znanych polskich kompozytorów. Wyrósł w tradycji katolickiej muzyki organowej — był synem organisty z Budsławia (obecnie na Białorusi). Kształcił się w petersburskim konserwatorium. Ceniono go jako koncertującego pianistę i świetnego
improwizatora. Pracował również jako organista liturgiczny i prowadził chóry — najpierw w Grodnie, później w Wilnie. Pozostawił po sobie kilkadziesiąt kompozycji. Zmarł w Wilnie i został pochowany na Rossie.
Artykuł przedstawia nieznane dotychczas źródła związane z biografią Joachima Glińskiego. Przywołuje również warunki, w jakich rozwijało się polskie życie muzyczne w Wilnie, w II połowie XIX w., w czasach bezwzględnie prowadzonej rusyfikacji.

Beginning in the second half of the 19th century and continuing into the early decades of the 20th century, the Cecilian movement—the project to revive the sacred polyphony of the sixteenth century—had a significant impact in Spain. Searching for, copying, sharing and collecting music of the great master of the so-called Siglo de Oro of Spanish polyphony were among the main activities pursued by Cecilian musicians and musicologists. Manuscripts and printed books with music by Morales, Guerrero and Victoria, among others, acquired a new value, becoming treasures that had to be preserved.
Focusing on a few lesser-known music compilers (Olmeda, Guzmán, Ripollés), this outlines their role in the Spanish Cecilian movement and shows how a study of the catalogues, manuscript compilation and, especially, the discussion among musicologists in private correspondence, helped to collectively rebuild part of the musical world of the 16th century.

Projekt sređivanja i katalogizacije arhiva Oratorijskoga zbora sv. Marka (1920-1946) završen je u godini kada nasljednik toga poznatoga vokalnoga ansambla, Oratorijski zbor crkve sv. Marka Cantores sancti Marci (1988), slavi 30. obljetnicu postojanja. Glazbena građa što ju je Zbor primio u nasljeđe sada će po prvi put biti predstavljena javnosti.
Projekt je iniciralo Oratorijsko društvo crkve sv. Marka, a financijski su ga potpomogli Ministarstvo kulture Republike Hrvatske i Grad Zagreb. Sređivanje i katalogizacija realizirani su većim dijelom u okviru kolegija Glazbena arhivistika na Odsjeku za muzikologiju Muzičke akademije Sveučilišta u Zagrebu.
Sačuvane muzikalije svjedoče o izvrsnoj djelatnosti zbora na području crkvene glazbe u razdoblju od početka 20. stoljeća do Drugoga svjetskog rata, u punome zamahu cecilijanskoga pokreta, što je u Zagrebu bio naišao na osobito angažirane poklonike. Uz povijest djelovanja Oratorijskoga zbora sv. Marka te pokušaj rekonstrukcije glazbovanja u crkvi sv. Marka prije osnutka Zbora, glavni će dio predavanja biti posvećen predstavljanju načina katalogizacije glazbene građe Arhiva te analizi sređenog fonda, iz koje će proizaći dosad nepoznati podaci o količini građe i njezinoj provenijenciji te o zastupljenim skladateljima i glazbenim vrstama što su se izvodile.

This article investigates the genesis, programming patterns, and transnational impact of the series of early music concerts (Historische Concerte) performed on the occasion of the Viennese International Exhibition of Music and Theater of 1892. Guido Adler was the co-organizer of those concerts, and this article will focus on the impact of this set of twelve historical performances on Adler’s epistemological perspective. Through this case study, I also aim to reassess the intersections between the history of monumental music editing and the historically informed musical practices in the context of international events at the turn of the twentieth century.

El Cecilianismo fue un movimiento surgido en Alemania durante la segunda mitad del s. XIX. Fruto de esta corriente F. X. Witt (1834-88) fundaría en 1869 la Sociedad General de Santa Cecilia, asociación que centró sus esfuerzos, entre otras cuestiones, en fijar la pautas para la creación de composiciones modernas. En España estas ideas no cobrarían impulso hasta la promulgación en 1903 del Motu Proprio por Pío X, documento que también establecía una serie de preceptos encaminados a fiscalizar la reforma de este arte.
Como consecuencia de este rescripto se crearía en 1905 la Comisión Archidiocesana de Valladolid, siendo una de sus competencias la de regular el funcionamiento de cada una de las comisiones fundadas a su imagen y semejanza en las distintas diócesis, hecho que propició la organización del I Congreso Nacional de Música Sagrada (Valladolid 1907). Sin embargo, no sería hasta un lustro después, durante el III Congreso Nacional de Música Sagrada de Barcelona, cuando se funde la malograda Asociación Ceciliana Española con el delicado cometido de unificar criterios a nivel nacional en torno a la composición musical religiosa.
Partiendo de estas premisas nos proponemos, por un lado, conocer cómo fue el proceso de gestación de dichos organismos de control –Comisión Archidiocesana de Valladolid y Asociación Ceciliana Española– acercándonos a sus protagonistas y motivaciones y, por otro, analizar algunas de las razones por las cuales el Motu Proprio finalmente no terminó de asentarse en toda en España.
