Antisemitism, Anti-Zionism

Brym's article critically reviews data and the small body of published research on the relationship between antisemitic and anti-Israel attitudes in Canada and internationally with the aim of identifying key questions that Canadian and non-Canadian researchers who are interested in this contentious issue might profitably address. It derives a series of hypotheses from the literature review and discusses methodological approaches to testing them.

Ces derniers voient dans l’établissement du Foyer national juif en Palestine d’abord un moyen de trouver une terre d’asile pour les Juifs d’Europe centrale qui affluent en France à partir de 1933, mais aussi l’aspiration légitime de certains Juifs à vouloir vivre une vie authentiquement juive et un moyen de redynamiser la culture juive de la diaspora, menacée par l’assimilation. L’article s’interroge sur les raisons qui poussent ces notables juifs, sans renoncer à leur intégration française, à assumer de manière plus décomplexée et plus profonde qu’auparavant leur attachement à certains idéaux sionistes au cours de cette décennie

Through a detailed analysis of the columns of the Univers israélite, the unofficial paper of the Central Consistory, this article demonstrates the newly expressed support for Zionism among French Jewish leaders in the 1930s. The latter see the creation of a Jewish homeland, first and foremost, as a means of finding a refuge for Central European Jews who fled to France in 1933. Secondly, they consider it a legitimate aspiration for certain Jews to want to live an authentically Jewish life and finally, as a means of renewing Jewish culture in the diaspora, threatened by assimilation. The article questions the reasons that encouraged these Jewish leaders – without renouncing their French integration – to embrace a progressively more assertive and profound attachment to certain Zionist ideals over this decade.
