Absolutely. Each and every Vital Essentials product is made in our very own facility located in Wisconsin. Our manufacturing facility proudly carries the Global Food Safety Initiative FSC22000 Certification and is EU and Gluten-Free certified.
-
Why should I wash my hands after handling raw freeze dried food?
The FDA recommends washing your hands after handing any raw food, including freeze-dried pet foods.
-
Is it normal for raw freeze dried food to have an aroma?
Yes! Since our foods are made with high levels of meat, you can expect the food to have a meaty aroma. Some proteins have a more noticeable aroma than others.
-
What if my pet has tummy issues after eating raw freeze dried food?
Any change in diet comes with a chance of digestive upset. This is why we recommend a slow transition over the course of 5-7 days when changing your pet's food! This helps give your dog or cat plenty of time to adjust to his or her new diet.
-
What if my pet doesn't like his new food or treat?
We're confident that your pet will LOVE Vital Essentials, but all animals have preferences! If the first product you try isn't a hit with your dog or cat, we offer a wide variety of proteins and textures that we're sure will be a great fit.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2024Flavor Name: TurkeySize: 8 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseFor the last 4 or 5 years our cats have lost interest in several varieties of canned cat food they’d eaten for years (change in formulas?). When one got really sick we tried lots of new things to get him eating again. The turkey patties were a hit, but we had a hoard of other cat food, thanks to Covid, so this got put aside when he recovered. Recently one of our other kitty boys, who wasn’t crazy about his canned food at breakfast or dinner, crept into the pantry and found the turkey patties, then pretty much destroyed the bag to get at them. They must’ve smelled great cuz he’d never gotten to try them before. I crumble the patties, removing any suspect pieces that might be bone shards, and mix with water since our boys have been used to wet food and so don’t usually drink much water. They obviously love the taste and gobble this stuff, trying to get at it before I add water. They’d prefer to eat it dry but they don’t get that option since I worry they won’t drink enough. Ordered more today to add in the rotation and will consider using much more often for the quality ingredients and lack of nonsense filler, and it obviously makes the boys happy. It’s not cheap, but what is these days?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024Flavor Name: ChickenSize: 3.75 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI got the 3.7oz chicken snacky pack for my boy. Smells bad, therefore he loves it! I just crumble them in my hand, put it in a dish, and add some water - if he doesn't eat it all in the first hour or so I'll come back and add more soup (water) to it. The little pack has 9-10 patties in it, so they're about the same price as regular cans but have much more protein. Since the serving size is 3 patties for my chunky man, I've been giving him one a day and about 1/2-2/3 his regular amount of dry food as we attempt a light diet.
Pros: healthy, inexpensive, cat enjoys it
Cons: cat DEMANDS it and will put off eating his dry food if he suspects he's getting more chicken soups.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024Flavor Name: ChickenSize: 8 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI have this on auto ship because my Peanut loves having this several times a week. I believe he is getting good nutrition from this chicken and have not found any bones when I break the patties up. I know this can be a little costly; however, knowing he will eat it vs. guessing and throwing food away - it saves me in the long run.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2024Flavor Name: RabbitSize: 3.75 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseWish it came in smaller pieces - I have to break the small brick part into bite size bits. Had odd smell and I don't like touching it. But one of my cats really likes it (but not the other cat) and it seems a healthful treat.
The product may be a better size if used as a dog treat.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2024Flavor Name: TurkeySize: 8 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseThese should be illegal. They are full of large sharp bone fragments. My cat has IBD and this made him bleed in his pooh. I'm so angry. You can't see them unless you tear it apart to powder and it has just too many bones to be safe for our loved furry family. Please protect your babies and don't feed them sharp bony foods like these. Bones aren't even listed in the ingredients either..so bad especially for already sick kitties.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2024Flavor Name: RabbitSize: 3.75 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI was half expecting my girl to not like this entrée given that the rabbit treats she refuses to touch. I will say that she's currently seven months old so she may not have her adult teeth in. Treat which is nibs has a small bone in it. I only found that out rehydrating it.
Now the patty is fine for my girl. It has ground, powdered bone in it so it's not bothersome for my girl. She immediately took to eating this and ate most of the serving in one shot. She normally grazes her food and takes entirely too long to eat a 3oz serving of any food. It didn't take long to rehydrate however I sort of cooked it a bit having used boiled water from my kettle. Patty turned into what looked like shreds to me.
Originally I presented the patty broken up dry but my girl absolutely refused it that way. It's not a big deal for me as she eats Primal Instinct brand of dehydrated rabbit dry which is given as a kibble topper.
Between Vital and Primal, for rehydrating Vital wins. Vital looks like real rabbit to me in that it maintains a pink like color. Rabbit when cooked shouldn't be any shade of deep brown or caramel. Primal adds coloring to their option which isn't he best for any cat. Both options is easy to break apart into smaller pieces. Scent wise, I personally feel that Primal is more fragrant dry. Vital's option was very fragrant when rehydrated. Price point wise, both brands is expensive. It's not the most cost effective. Despite the price my cat seems to be thriving on both options with a shiny, soft coat and extra energy.
Also because this a raw product there isn't any gums included in the option. Her bowel movements have been normal log shaped and mild smelling. Wet foods with gums will always cause poor bowels and more smelly one. My girl just so happened to be sensitive to gums so I have noted the differences in her bowels when off gums vs given foods with them.
Overall I definitely recommend Vital's freeze dried food. It doesn't have to be served raw as using boiling water or microwaving it cooks it. Either way, this is the closest to a real hunt my girl will ever have in her diet.
