Demon Varan
|
The Demon Varan is a giant demonic triphibious kaiju who appears in the second issue of IDW Publishing's 2015 comic book series Godzilla in Hell. A demonic replica of an enemy Godzilla battled in life, the Demon Varan attacked the King of the Monsters in the Eternal Ocean, but was quickly defeated.
Name
The Demon Varan's name simply comes from placing the word "demon", a word referring to malevolent entities often associated with Hell, in front of Varan.
Design
The Demon Varan's appearance is primarily based on his namesake. However, his eyes are orange and pupilless, emphasizing his demonic nature.
Personality
The Demon Varan instantly attacks Godzilla upon his appearance in the Eternal Ocean, though he was equally quick to retreat.
Origins
Whether the Demon Varan is a demonic copy of the real Varan or the real Varan under demonic possession is unknown. Earlier in the issue, the narration characterizes the Demon Rodan as one of the "lost, possessed effigies of great kaiju" who inhabit Hell, presumably including the Demon Varan. The issue's official description states that Godzilla's opponents are "demonic versions of his greatest foes", suggesting they are demons imitating kaiju rather than demonically-possessed kaiju, although it also refers to a "city that can never be destroyed" which is not evident in the story.[1]

Trivia
- Coincidentally, Varan himself would've been featured as an enemy of Godzilla and a demonic entity as the harbinger of the Apocalypse in the scrapped film Godzilla vs. Giant Monster Varan, one of many ideas for the seventh Heisei Godzilla film which ultimately became Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995).
- Godzilla would not fight Varan himself in an IDW comic until Godzilla: Rage Across Time #5 (2016). Varan had, however, previously been an enemy of Godzilla in the 1988 video game Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!, the 1993 video game Godzilla, King of the Monsters; they also briefly scrapped in the 1998 Random House book Godzilla: Journey to Monster Island.
