The Imperialis Armada was the predecessor to the Imperial Navy. Existing since the dawn of the Imperium, it was a sub-branch of the Imperial Army and dedicated to the defence of Imperial space as opposed to the fleets of the Legiones Astartes that were designed around planetary assault.[1] The Imperialis Armada provided the naval strength for the Expeditionary Fleets, each of which consisted of hundreds of thousands of spaceships.[7]
After the Horus Heresy, the Imperium decided to break up the Imperial Army's fleet component in an attempt to weaken any future potential rebellions, turning the Imperial Armada into the fully independent Imperial Navy.[2]
