The marimba is the (“traditional”) instrument par excellence in the Mexican state of Chiapas. Its current practices nowadays may range between participative and presentative performances, while its repertoire drifts between popular genres, such as música ranchera and bolero, along with contemporary music and jazz. Its roots and representativeness are such that it would give the impression of being omnipresent in the soundscape of the state. Nonetheless, there are two different kinds of marimba in Chiapas: on the one hand, the marimba doble –chromatic–, which is widely visible and, no doubt, the cultural symbol of the state; and, on the other hand, the marimba sencilla –diatonic–, whose status and visibility are almost non-existent. Whereas the marimba doble has found a niche within ethnomusicology research, the marimba sencilla has been utterly ignored, having been at times even considered to be extinct in the state. Notwithstanding, it continues to be not only present inside the state, but also an essential part of the identity of several social groups. This research focuses on such diatonic marimba tradition. Based on the information gathered during several research stays in the area, it attempts to offer a general scope of the dissemination and functioning, as well as of the various sociocultural interrelations of this musical tradition in the state of Chiapas. At the same time, being the first scientific research that is focused exclusively on this musical tradition, it aims to offer some groundwork for the development of future research which grant access to a deeper understanding of this musical tradition.

La marimba es el instrumento (“tradicional”) por excelencia en el estado mexicano de Chiapas. Sus prácticas actuales pueden oscilar entre performances participativos y presentacionales, al tiempo que su repertorio navega entre géneros populares, como música ranchera y bolero, y la música contemporánea, así como el jazz. Su arraigo y representatividad son tales que diera la impresión de ser omnipresente en el paisaje sonoro chiapaneco. En Chiapas existen, sin embargo, dos tipos de marimba: por un lado, la marimba doble –cromática–, la cual goza de una amplia visibilidad y es sin duda el símbolo cultural del estado. Y por el otro la marimba sencilla –diatónica–; esta última con un status y una visibilidad casi nulos. Si bien, la marimba doble ha encontrado un lugar en la investigación etnomusicológica, la marimba sencilla ha sido ignorada por completo, siendo en ocasiones considerada extinta en este estado. Sin embargo, esta sigue, no solo estando presente en el estado, sino que también sigue siendo una parte primordial de la identidad de diversos grupos sociales. El siguiente trabajo se encuentra enfocado a esta tradición marimbística diatónica. Basado en la información recabada durante diversas estancias de investigación en la zona, se busca dar una visión general de la diseminación y el funcionamiento, así como de las diversas interrelaciones socioculturales de esta tradición musical en el estado de Chiapas. Al mismo tiempo, al ser este el primer estudio científico enfocado exclusivamente a esta tradición musical, se busca sentar las bases para el desarrollo de futuras investigaciones que nos permitan acceder a un entendimiento profundo de esta tradición musical.

Las nuevas tecnologías y medios digitales no solo se han convertido en una parte integral de nuestras vidas sino también en una parte inseparable de nuestro trabajo etnográfico. L@s músic@s usan las redes sociales y otras tecnologías digitales para representarse y promocio- narse, pero también otr@s actores construyen y participan a través de estos medios en los discursosde estas prácticas musicales. Sin embargo, l@s nativ@s digitales experimentan estos nuevos medios de una manera más intensa y confidencial, percibiéndolos como una extensión de su propia realidad. Esto les ha permitido construir nuevas identidades mixtas y virtuales, y también hacer cada vez más clara la interrelación e interconexión entre espacios físicos y virtuales multilocales, actuando de manera más fluida en sus prácticas musicales y construc- ciones de conocimiento. Esta apropiación de los mundos virtuales, así como el desarrollo de nuevas plataformas digitales, proporcionaron nuevos espacios para el desarrollo de nuevas formas de prácticas musicales. En este artículo busco discutir, basado en mi trabajo sobre prácticas musicales virtuales, ejemplificado en la aplicación móvil TikTok, diversas posibilidades metodológicas y teóricas, así como diversos desafíos durante el desarrollo de etnografías en mundos musicales virtuales. Proponiendo concebir nuestras prácticas musicales como expre- siones auditivas que diferentes identidades físicas y virtuales interactúan y experimentan en espacios multilocales conectados asincrónicamente, sugiero que un performance digital pue- de ser, aparte de una representación de la realidad, una parte integral de ella, e igualmente, contribuir a la construcción de un mundo experiencial extendido.

Ethnomusicologists often move into the field to observe, analyse, and describe the knowledge creation and negotiation practices of a musical tradition. However, the scenarios caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have proven to be a challenge to the practice of our ethnographic work. We were prevented from going to the field and musicians could not meet physically to develop their musicking, partially transferring their practices to various digital platforms. Although the pandemic confronts us with previously unthinkable challenges, some of these situations are not new if we think about musical practices like those of TikTok. Beyond the time of the pandemic, these practices have already shown to be a challenge for various theoretical and methodologi- cal conceptions of our ethnographic work, since they do not materialize in concrete practices in a given place. In this article, drawing on my ethnographic research on TikTok musicking from an Austrian perspective, as well as my reflections as an ethnomusicologist during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, I will discuss the idea of musical geography through practice, as well as the concepts of presence and co-presence, to critically reflect on the ideas of “being there” or “being present”, so important in ethnographic work. In addition to these reflections, I will examine and discuss various experiences lived throughout the musicking of TikTok under a multimedia reality before and during the pandemic, in order to discuss the idea that musical geography through practice can change our perspectives on the field pre- and post-pandemic.

Nowadays it is not easy to imagine mainstream musical practices without considering the role various digital platforms play for them. Although the growing use of digital platforms, especially YouTube and TikTok, has led them to become musical and performative worlds by themselves, many of the musical practices on these platforms are developed beyond a single platform or specific medium, fostering the development of networked creativity and practice. In this article, drawing on my ethnographic research on TikToks musicking from an Austrian context, I will lead a critical reflection on how these practices can and did take place beyond a specific platform. I propose that musicking interactions and interrelations between actors of TikTok, YouTube, or other platforms can and did take place on and through multiple platforms, and beyond physical or digital encounters.

Las marimbistas en Chiapas han desarrollado una concepción dinámica de su identidad auditiva, convirtiendo la adaptación y resignificación de músicas con orígenes heterogéneos en una práctica común de esta tradición musical. Este articulo busca, a través de un viaje por la historia del mundo marimbístico chiapaneco, hacer visibles los procesos que hicieron posible la negociación de una práctica de apropiación de músicas y formas de ejecución durante el desarrollo marimbístico en Chiapas, la cual permitió que la resignificación de lo otro se convirtiera en la base de un conocimiento auditivo propio.

Marimbists in Chiapas have developed a dynamic conception of their auditory identity, turningthe adaptation and resignificance of music with heterogeneous origins into common practiceof this musical tradition. This article seeks, through a journey into the history of the marimba world in Chiapas, to make visible the processes that made possible the negotiation of a praxis of appropriation of music and forms of execution during the development of the marimba inChiapas, and which would allow the resignificance of the other to become the basis of one’s own auditory knowledge.
