The search for answers is over. The Y: The Last Man TV series has been canceled so there won’t be a second season, at least not on FX on Hulu. The first season is currently being released on Mondays on Hulu and will finish after three more episodes, on November 1st. An executive producer for the show says there are efforts underway to find the show a new home.
A post-apocalypse drama, the Y: The Last Man show is based on the DC Comics series of the same name by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. It stars Diane Lane, Ben Schnetzer, Ashley Romans, Diana Bang, Juliana Canfield, Amber Tamblyn, Olivia Thirlby, Elliot Fletcher, Marin Ireland, and Missi Pyle. After a mysterious Event wipes out every living creature with a Y chromosome, throwing the world into chaos, Congresswoman Jennifer Brown (Lane) rises through a decimated line of succession to become President of the United States. Jennifer assembles a dedicated team of women to rebuild, but her plans are upended when she learns that her cisgender son Yorick (Schnetzer) and his male pet monkey survived the Event. Facing massive unrest fueled by widespread conspiracy theories, Jennifer teams up with covert operative Agent 355 (Romans) to keep Yorick’s survival a secret and transport him to Dr. Allison Mann (Bang), a top geneticist who may be able to discover how he survived. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better.
Series showrunner and executive producer Eliza Clark broke the news of the cancellation via Twitter and wrote, “We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of Y: The Last Man. I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much left to tell… We don’t want it to end.” She continued, “FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad Y: The Last Man is not going forward at FX on Hulu. But we know that someone else is going to be very lucky to have this team and this story. I never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y its next home. #YLivesOn”

Tamblyn wrote, “#YTheLastMan will not get a second season on FX and while I’m disappointed, I know this extraordinary show that has so much to say, and that says it so well, will find a great new home soon. Looking forward to the next chapter. If you’re with me, let the world know. #YLivesOn”
What do you think? Have you watched the Y: The Last Man TV series? Are you glad to hear that it’s been renewed for a second season by FX on Hulu?
So, another entertaining series bites the dust (see Clarice as I make my case), because so many of you have the attention span of a flea these days. As idiot reality shows and so-called adult cartoons encroach on the scripted shows of the past, we keep losing the entertainment and the STORIES that used to prevail on the media platforms. Scream at me all you want, but I stand by my opinion. Many people I know are no longer watching new shows due to the morons who downrate perfectly great shows just because SOME of them are “too slow,” or… Read more »
I seldom quit a sci-fi series before giving it one season to establish the backstory, see progression of character and plot development, etc.
However, I could not last beyond the third episode of “Y,” with that ridiculous man-child endlessly searching for his monkey. A lot of the “science” and crisis decision-making seemed illogical.
As first posited by Monty Python, “every sperm is sacred,” and here there seemed to be a constant emphasis of the micro over the macro where species-saving was concerned.
The shows viewership must have been pretty bad for them to cancel it that quickly.
I am kind of disappointed. I read the source material last year so I know more or less where they were going with it so it’s a pity.
I guess people just don’t have the attention span that allows a series to set the stage and then build on top of that anymore. Lost wouldn’t last beyond the first season in today’s climate.
Lost was great and intriguing in the beginning, it would absolutely be successful after first season today. Unlike this garbage here, that was designed to fail.
Not the least bit surprised by this. As someone who has watched the entire series, with the exception of 2 episodes of 8 the other 6 were complete garbage. Trash Writing, Worse Acting and the real issue was a series based on the Last Man on Earth and simply having that Last Man be in more of a Side Story then the Main Story it should have been.
No I watched it it was worth watching for a while but you can tell the series wasn’t going to last. Did enjoy it while it lasted though
As a concept, I like the show. And it also shows how quick relations between women become stretched, giving pause to the common concept of “when women would rule the world, the world would be a better place.”
It also shows that some viewpoints (on both the male and female side) work to degrade society far quicker than terror attempts do. And that capable persons are not appreciated enough, even when they are most needed after a severe calamity as portrayed in the show.
