Times are changing but television ratings are still incredibly important to the networks and cable channels. After all, they still derive most of their income from being paid when viewers watch the commercials that air during their TV shows. For that reason, the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demographic) are the best way to tell if a TV show will be cancelled or renewed. The higher the revenue, the more incentive a channel has to invest in more episodes.
