WHAT WILL THE 5G-INFRASTRUCTURE-PPP DELIVER?

The 5G-Infrastructure-PPP will deliver solutions, architectures, technologies and standards for the ubiquitous 5G communication infrastructures of the next decade.

The economic target impact is to keep and reinforce a strong EU industrial base in the domain of network technologies, which is seen as strategic industry worldwide. Retaining at least 35% of the global market share in Europe regarding future network equipment would be a strategic goal.

At a societal level, the impact is to support an ubiquitous access to a wider spectrum of applications and services offered at lower cost, with increased resilience and  continuity, with higher efficiency of resources usage (e.g. spectrum), and to reduce network energy consumption.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

The development of new communication networks is dependent on the emergence of globally accepted standards in order to ensure interoperability, economies of scale with affordable cost for system deployment and end users. This partnership aims to have European industry driving the development of 5G standards and to develop and exploit at least 20% of the 5G SEP (standards essential patents).

The following parameters are indicative new network characteristics to be achieved at an operational level:

• 1000 times higher mobile data volume per geographical area.
• 10 to 100 times more connected devices.
• 10 times to 100 times higher typical user data rate.
• 10 times lower energy consumption.
• End-to-End latency of < 1ms.
• Ubiquitous 5G access including in low density areas.

This new high-performance network will be operated via a scalable management framework enabling fast deployment of novel applications, including sensor based applications, with reduction of the network management opex by at least 20% compared to today.

In addition, new lightweight but robust security and authentication metrics suitable for a new era of pervasive multi domain visualized networks and services will have to be provided.
