Quseir Amra - Jordan

Built in the early 8th century, this exceptionally well-preserved desert castle was both a fortress with a garrison and a residence of the Umayyad caliphs. 
 The most outstanding features of this small pleasure palace are the reception hall and the hammam, both richly decorated with figurative murals that reflect the secular art of the time.

Punic Town of Kerkuane and its Necropolis - Tunesia

This Phoenician city was probably abandoned during the First Punic War (c. 250 B.C.) and as a result was not rebuilt by the Romans. 
The remains constitute the only example of a Phoenicio-Punic city to have survived. 
The houses were built to a standard plan in accordance with a sophisticated notion of town planning.

Pont du Gard - France

The Pont du Gard was built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes (which is almost 50 km long) to cross the Gard river. 
The Roman architects and hydraulic engineers who designed this bridge, which stands almost 50 m high and is on three levels – the longest measuring 275 m – created a technical as well as an artistic masterpiece.

Petra - Jordan

Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia.  
Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. 
It is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture.

Painted Churches in the Troodos Region - Cyprus

This region is characterized by one of the largest groups of churches and monasteries of the former Byzantine Empire. 
The complex of 10 monuments included on the World Heritage List, all richly decorated with murals, provides an overview of Byzantine and post-Byzantine painting in Cyprus. 
They range from small churches whose rural architectural style is in stark contrast to their highly refined decoration, to monasteries such as that of St John Lampadistis.
