Tina Rasmussen: Buddha at the Gas Pump

Host Rick Archer, BATGAP, Feb. 26, 2019; Dhr. Seven, Kelly Ani (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

Dr. Tina Rasmussen: Buddha at the Gas Pump interview
(BuddhaAtTheGasPump) Further discussion regarding this interview may be found in the BatGap Community Facebook Group. Also see batgap.com/tina-rasmussen.

Diamond Way Buddhism to bodhi
After 20+ years of Buddhist and non-dual practice, in 2003 Dr. Tina Rasmussen, Ph.D., undertook a year-long solo retreat during which awakening (bodhi) occurred. She later
  • ordained as a Theravada Buddhist nun with the world-renowned Burmese Meditation Master Pa Auk Sayadaw,
  • became the first Western woman to attain that path, and
  • was authorized to teach.
Practicing the Jhanas: Concentration Meditation
Dr. Rasmussen has been studied by the Yale Neuroscience Lab for research on the effects of meditation on consciousness and the brain.

She is the co-author (along with her then-husband and fellow-attainer Stephen Snyder) of Practicing the Jhanas: Traditional Concentration Meditation as Presented by the Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw, and has been featured on Conscious TV and in Non-duality Magazine.

She is also involved in the Diamond Approach to realization. Dr. Rasmussen teaches students worldwide how to walk the path of the “urban mystic” — functioning from a deep spiritual understanding while living a modern human life.

Dr. Rasmussen has worked in the field of human/organizational development as a consultant/coach for 25+ years, with several published books on humanistic leadership.

Ajahn Brahm: Australia burning (live)

Ajahn Brahm (BSWA, Jan. 31, 2020 live stream); Amber Larson, Crystal Q., Wisdom Quarterly

Live Dhamma Talk, January 31, 2020
(Buddhist Society of Western Australia) Bush fires of Australia? It's not the first time. Corona virus? It's not the first time mass panic is being spread about a contagious virus when the common flu kills many more every year, and vaccines do even more harm in terms of morbidity (see Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe), because we are reacting in fear. Funny and kind, Ajahn Brahm is a British monk trained at Cambridge who ordained in the Theravada Buddhist Thai forest tradition under Ajahn Chah. Support the BSWA in making teachings available for free online via patreon.com/BuddhistSocietyWA. Recorded at Dhammaloka Buddhist Centre, Perth, Western Australia.

This live Dharma talk culminates with a Chinese New Year performance and blessing.

The Buddhist Geeks Conference 2012
August 9–11, 2012
FREE video event
Discover the emerging faces of Buddhism at the Buddhist Geeks Conference 2012 via Sounds True live video streaming.

Not Your Normal Buddhist Conference
This is an opportunity to explore the frontiers of Buddhism, technology, and global culture. This year’s gathering brings together luminaries in the fields of Buddhism, science, philosophy, education, business, politics, and more. Participants will explore how the Dharma is co-evolving with modern insights and trends to change lives -- personally and globally -- in extraordinarily unexpected ways.

(vincenthorn.com)
Buddhist Geeks co-founder Vincent Horn describes the conference this way:

“Some Buddhist events can be boring and predictable and tend to draw on the same group of speakers again and again. When we launched the conference last year, we wanted to create one with a completely fresh and innovative format [to] explore new topics in new ways. Feedback was very enthusiastic. This year’s conference in Boulder, Colorado, will build on what people liked the best from last year, while adding exciting new elements.”

Live video streaming is available exclusively through Sounds True. A pass gives those interested up-close coverage of all featured events.

Can’t make a live session? Don't worry! Recordings from live sessions will be available by 7:00 pm Eastern Time (GMT -4), two business days after the conference concludes.

Meditation: Easy as 1-2-Breathe!

Basic Techniques of Breathing Meditation
Shannon Curtin

• The purpose of step-by-step breathing meditation is to create a peaceful mind. A peaceful mind is free from worries and mental discomfort. To meditate first set the stage by stopping distractions and clearing your mind. This can be done through simple breathing.
  1. Choose a quiet place and sit comfortably. Sitting may be in the traditional cross legged position, a chair, or any comfortable seat that allows your back to be straight to prevent sluggishness.
  2. Partially close your eyes and begin to focus on the natural rhythm of your breath. Be aware as the breath enters and exits the nostrils.
  3. If the mind is busy at first it's normal. There's no need to follow different thoughts as they arise. Remain focused on your breath in spite of everything.
• Persist. Practicing patiently gradually teaches the mind to focus, and stray thoughts subside. Soon there is an experience of inner peace and relaxation. Enjoy this state of mental calm whenever it arises. Breathing meditation is simply the first stage of meditation [according to the sutra on the "Four Foundations of Mindfulness"]. Insight leads to deeper forms of meditation. It is important to learn to calm and steady the mind before advancing.

• Stress and tension come from an unruly and restless mind. Once the mind stabilizes, with the abandoning of restless thoughts and the gaining of stillness, there is an experience of happiness and peace. This form of contentment leads to better coping with everyday stressors. Difficult situations still arise, but now there is an ability to handle them with ease. In time, relationships improve. It's as easy as 1-2-breathe. More>>
