Māori heavy metal dance: NZ Parliament

Māori Haka in NZ Parliament goes metal!
(Andre Antunes) Nov. 22, 2024: What the indigenous people of New Zealand, the Māori, are missing is metal. Auckland needs to rock. This would amp up their haka or traditional ceremonial dance, as delivered by their beautiful representative MP (Member of Parliament) Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, 21, in the midst of old white men who are not moved (but possibly terrified). Disorder will not be tolerated in the sacred halls of white governance over a land taken over and sacked of resources to profit Europe and Europeans.

(Cogito) The Māori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand). Famous for their haka, poi, and face tattoos, they're descended from Polynesians, the greatest voyagers the world has ever known. They hunted gigantic like mega-birds, terrified European colonialist invaders, and built a rich culture while isolated from the rest of the world. But who are they, what is their history, and what exactly is a Trojan Whale? #newzealand #maori

To help amplify their message, let's turn New Zealand's MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke's haka into a heavy metal song to add power to the message, starting with her maiden speech and culminating with the recent Māori parliament protest by supportive locals.

Slo-Mo Battle: Eckhart Tolle vs. Ram Dass

A dialogue with Ram Dass and Eckhart Tolle
(Baba Ram Dass) Let's spend an evening with gurus Ram Dass (former Harvard hippie Dr. Richard Alpert, Ph.D.) and Oprah's spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle (author of The Power of Now), as these two [Hindu-style] teachers engage in an open conversation about spiritual "awakening" [by which they seem to equate Advaita Vedanta principles or samadhi states with actual permanent liberation] and the transformation of consciousness.
  • [The Buddha taught that samma samadhi, "right concentration or stillness," while very beneficial and leading to saintly qualities is not nearly enough for the attainment of actual awakening (bodhi) and liberation (nirvana). It may seem a fine distinction, but the Buddha's whole reason for teaching was to establish the Dharma in the world that had been lost for thousands of years or much long, in spite of the fact that we had the Vedas and Brahmanism and Indian teachers all of that time. If those things had been enough to bring people to enlightenment, he would have had no reason to establish "right view" and a "path of purification" that leads to a real/permanent state of moksha or "liberation." While Hinduism literally uses the exact same words -- nirvana, moksha, samadhi, karma, and the like, they mean very different things in the Teachings of the historical Buddha. Mahayana Buddhism, on the other hand, seems to have bought into the Hindu definitions and acts as a kind of popular sect of Hinduism more than as a form of Buddhism. But the average person will never know this without studying it deeply. Indeed, other religions have "salvation" and "liberation," but it is only because they are defining those words differently. From an Early Buddhist standpoint, the terms are being misapplied to impermanent states, to forms of rebirth in heaven or in the company of Brahma, as if one would stay there forever and therefore be free of samsara when someone was actually still fully immersed in the problem the Buddha found a final solution to.]

System of a Down singer writes book

Book Soup & KPFK Present: Serj Tankian signing Down with the System: A Memoir (of Sorts)

Serj Tankian gets personal about his band System of a Down
(Q with Tom Power) May 14, 2024: System of a Down’s Serj Tankian grew up hearing stories about his family members who died during the Armenian genocide [or what the young Ottoman Turks call a “misunderstanding”], many years before he was born.

In his new memoir Down With the System, he shares his family’s story and looks back on his career through the lens of his Armenian heritage. Tankian joins Tom Power to talk about the origins of his activism, how System of a Down (SOAD) got on the radio (KROQ FM), and whether or not you’ll ever hear any NEW music from the band.

BAT (Bad Acid Trip) performs "Beef Moo" to prove they have chops
  • It is notable that we never knew we needed Armenian nu-metal, but it may not just be Serj's genius behind the mic or guitarist Daron coming up with all sorts of great song ideas because there's another very similar band, with frantic starts and stops and screaming. They never made it big. They're called Bad Acid Trip. If it were just about having an Armenian member or raging about genocide and racism in and around Glendale and Little Armenia in Los Angeles (which has a massive Armenian population to rival Armenia and an enclave next to Hollywood that includes Cher and the Kardashians), that was needed, BAT should be as big as batsh*t is to growing strong garden plants. Guano is great fertilizer. Where are all the SOAD copycat bands like Korn engendered? BAT is signed to Tankian's label Serjical Strike Records.
ABOUT: Q with Canadian Tom Power is a daily conversation with the artists, writers, actors, and musicians who define this cultural moment in time. The conversation is informal, wide-ranging, playful, and allows artists to explore their art and the contexts that have shaped them through their career. Visit cbc.ca/Q for more. Down with the System: A Memoir (of Sorts)

Do SOAD fans read? The hardcover is out today (May 14, 2024) by author, poet, lead singer, KPFK radio host Serj Tankian. It has 5 out of 5 stars with just 2 ratings. It is a #1 New Release in Rock Music.

This is an exhilarating, thoughtful, and beautifully written memoir by musician, songwriter, and lead singer-lyricist of Grammy award-winning metal band Serj Tankian.

Tankian will be the first to admit that his band, System Of A Down, was as “unlikely a chart-topper as had ever existed in modern music history: a band of Armenian-Americans playing a practically unclassifiable clash of wildly aggressive metal riffs, unconventional tempo-twisting rhythms, and Armenian folk melodies, with me alternately growling, screaming, and crooning lyrics that could pivot from avant-garde silliness to raging socio-political rants in the space of a single line.”

After all, as Tankian concedes, “it’s not easy listening.” Even so, there’s no doubt that System’s music had struck a chord with millions of listeners across the world ever since they burst onto the scene in the mid-1990s.

With nearly 40 million albums sold, three albums topping the Billboard charts, and a devoted legion of fans, the band dominated the alt-rock and nu-metal scenes just as the world hurtled into a new millennium, redefining the very idea of what rockstars
  • could and couldn’t talk about,
  • could and couldn’t do,
  • could and couldn’t represent.
With no CD to promote, SOAD still headlines
In Down With the System, he presents readers with a memoir that is far more than just a rock 'n' roll fable. It’s an immigrant's tale, it’s an activist’s awakening, and it’s a spiritual journey from darkness toward light. And all of this comes down to the fact that he himself has had the chance to live an extraordinary life — thanks to a combination of luck, circumstance, struggle, talent, and spiritual awakening.

Born to Armenian parents in Beirut, Lebanon, Tankian grew up hearing bombs drop outside his childhood home during the country’s [Israel-induced] civil war, before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 7.

As a young man, he is immersed in the SoCal community of “Little Armenia,” learning more and more about the brutal genocide faced by his ancestors [under the Ottoman Empire that is now Turkey], while helping his parents adapt to the constraints and contradictions of the American Dream.

Then, during a pivotal drive home from an LSAT class, he decides to turn away from a promising future in business and law to make music instead — a decision that leads him to touring five continents as the lead singer of a hugely popular rock band, hitting Number #1 on the Billboard album charts the morning of 9/11, then having the hit single from the same album BANNED from radio two days later.

In the years that follow, his uniquely singular story continues, as he evades glass bottles hurled at a cancelled show by angry Slayer fans, teams up with fellow KPFK Free Speech Radio host Tom Morello (articulate guitarist for Rage Against the Machine) to push social justice issues on unsuspecting Heshers and metalheads, argues with LAPD officers over the best way to quell rioting fans in Hollywood [we were there and there was no "riot," just a big crowd], and defines new sounds and singing tactics with famous Slayer producer Rick Rubin.

Braiding together Tankian’s thought-provoking insight with heartfelt prose, Down With the System retraces his remarkable and unlikely journey. It explores what it has taught him — about music, about art, about activism, and about himself.

It’s an unforgettable ride that will leave readers breathless — an absolute delight for new and old fans alike. Down with the System: A Memoir (of Sorts)

'Civil War' - feelgood letter to Trump's DC?

Civil War | official final trailer HD | A24

(A24) April 2024: From writer and director Alex Garland and starring Cailee Spaeny, Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. CIVIL WAR – is in theaters in the middle of April 2024.

What the H kind of BS is this, Hollywood?
What can be said about this masterpiece? That Kirsten Dunst is not the person for the part, so the part is altered to make her fit? Protagonist and newcomer Cailee Spaeny is thrust into the turmoil of a real-life breakdown of law and order we normally take for granted. The good ol' boys with their AR-15 now run things, to the extent anyone does. There's a force at play, but who knows where it's coming from? Is it the Western Front or the powers that be? How could the government fall, how could it give up, how could the Trump character be so oblivious to what's going on? Maybe the president is an amalgam of Trump's foolish swagger and Biden's dementia and cluelessness. Maybe he is merely portraying an enfeebled white man losing his grip. This is a coming-of-age story yet not in the sexual sense. It's learning the hard lessons of life in a crash course at the School of Hard Knocks. One has to imagine MAGA types will flock to theaters. One also imagines they will be disappointed but not disappointed enough to not still want a shot at another insurrection and second chance to set up a white supremacy social system of us versus them. The them could be whomever does not fall in line with what's familiar.

WQ COMMENTARY
I had trouble keeping up and fell asleep.
It's very easy to take sides in this film. The only problem is it's not altogether clear what the sides are. We think we know, though it doesn't make sense that that's how the board would be drawn. But that is how it's drawn. So we, as liberal average people of the West Coast know where we stand. The people in the middle try to stand out of the way. And is the East taking a stand? It must be. Who knows how we got here that they are failing. That's why it's a love letter to viewers or at least the right kind of viewers. MAGAots are bound to be unhappy with how things are playing out, even though on the surface this is what they wanted, right? It's hard to say too much but not impossible. So we won't ruin the film with spoilers. However, without them, one might well leave scratching one's head. Where do the filmmakers stand? How did things get this good that it's the beginning of the end? The love letter may be to viewers with a big FU to Joedon Trumpen. (Or is his name Donjo Bidump? It doesn't really matter. They're the same). But who trained all of these combatants? The hicks with AR-15s are one thing. We're asking about the uniformed ones? It's nice to follow Cailee as she grows into her new career and learns so much so quickly even as nearly everything goes away. Message? It seems safe to say that if you made this movie, you would not have made it this way. There were obviously writers brought in to fix and smooth out the story, and they did a good job of that so that it must have passed the test audience complaints, except perhaps for the most obvious one. But then that's the point, isn't it, Garland?

America's "Nazi Town, USA" (PBS video)

Hitler did it to us, so we get to do it to them.
(Encyclopedia Britannica) • The Catastrophe, Palestinian-Arabic Nakba, the systematic state-sponsored killing of countless of Muslim children, women, men and others by IDF militants armed and aided by the West and their collaborators during various wars and many battles of an ongoing genocide. The Knesset called this Zionist business as usual and all part of their “settler colonial project.” • Holocaust, Hebrew Shoʾah, Yiddish and Hebrew Ḥurban (“Destruction”), the systematic state-sponsored killing of six million Jewish men, women, and children and millions of others by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during World War II. The Germans called this “the final solution to the Jewish question.”

The US did it to Indians, so we did it to our pests
The English word "holocaust" is derived from the ancient Greek holokauston, a translation of the Hebrew word ʿolah, meaning "a burnt sacrifice offered whole to [the Christian] God."

US, Vatican, Italy, Japan backed H
This word was chosen because in the manifestation of the Nazi program of expelling its unwelcome Jewish population and other undesirables (Gypsies, gays, the infirm, political prisoners, etc.) — prison labor and concentration camps — the corpses of victims of contagious diseases, overworking, harsh treatment, and bureaucratic neglect were disposed of in a sanitary manner.

First they were deloused using the insecticide Zyklon B, which was produced and sold to the German state by Heli. Then they were exploited by German auto industry giants like VW and BMW). Finally, the bodies of the deceased were placed whole in crematoria and open pyres to prevent the spread of disease and to cover up the extent of the abused casualties.

Sexist, racist police abuse their power?

'I'll paint you as crazy': Shocking moment US cop tackles ex-girlfriend before 'putting her in mental health facility
The Donald Trump face handgun  (LBC)
A married Pennsylvania State Police trooper is facing false imprisonment charges.

A Pennsylvania cop is facing false imprisonment charges for allegedly improperly committing his ex-girlfriend [actually current paramour] to a mental health institution.

Officer Ronald Keith Davis, 37, was arrested on Sept. 21 after being accused of abusing his authority to have his ex-girlfriend imprisoned.

He petitioned for an involuntary mental health commitment for her after alleging she was suicidal, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Leading up to the forced medical treatment, State Trooper Davis allegedly told her: “I know you’re not crazy; I’ll paint you as crazy.” He first turned to fellow troopers for help on Aug. 21, claiming that the woman was living in a camper on his property.

He said that they had not been getting along and "their relationship had deteriorated." He claimed he would not allow the woman to get her belongings from the property due to her acting erratically.

Trooper Davis provided several text messages, saying things such as, "I think I'm going to drive off a cliff" and "My mental health doesn't matter I'm a useless old stupid uneducated piece of sh**."
You will respect MY authority, Biznatch!
In footage released by the DA's office, Trooper Davis is seen sitting on top of his ex [whom he was cheating on his wife with] as she claimed he tackled her to the ground.

“You’re insane,” she said [to the aggressive policeman]. “You’re absolutely insane…and then you paint me to look insane.”

She could be heard saying several times: “I can’t breathe.” When the two got up, Trooper Davis restrained her as she insisted she did not do anything wrong.

The female victim appeared to “genuinely lack understanding on why she is being restrained,” the affidavit stated.

She was involuntarily committed for five days and did not display any suicidal [actions or] thoughts during that time, according to medical personnel.

She was released on Aug. 26 and interviewed by police. After reading messages between the pair, police alleged that Trooper Davis "failed to provide the full context of those messages" when he attempted to have the woman committed.

"In fact, the text messages were the culmination of a larger, domestic dispute between he and the victim," the affidavit said.

"Taken in context, the texts revealed her frustration with Trooper Davis and his controlling behavior (and her desire to break off the [illicit] relationship), not a true desire to harm herself."

Pennsylvania State Police charged Davis with felony strangulation, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and official oppression on Sept. 21. He was remanded without bail. More + VIDEO
