Faith Quarterly: Disbelief in Jesus Christ

From Holy to Heretic | Why I left Christianity
C'mon, Kristi, thou shalt submit.
(Kristi Burke) I was born and raised in the Southern Baptist Church and spent my childhood and teen years devoting myself to what I believed to be the good mission of Jesus Christ.

After years of devotion and Bible study, I realized that I no longer had any good reason to believe. I lost nearly everything I once knew and loved to carve out my most authentic path... But it was worth it.

Freewill? I control your life, not you!
I hope that by sharing my story I can bring some comfort, clarity, or validation to others out there who are struggling with their beliefs, too.

Please keep in mind that everything I say here is my subjective experience and opinion. It is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist, Evangelical, conservative Christian ideologies from an ex-Christian perspective. I know what I'm talking about, and there are Christians who will understand.

What do US Christians really believe? (NPR)

Meghna Chakrabarti, On Point, 12/25/23 (rebroadcast from 12/12/22); Eds., Wisdom Quarterly

What do American Christians believe about their own religion?
St. Francis of Assisi cross (Robert Alexander)
When referring to American Christians, politicians and the mainstream media are often focusing on one group — politicized evangelicals. But, in truth, they are a tiny slice of the broad spectrum of American Christianity.

A survey finds that American Christians’ beliefs are as diverse as the country they live in. From the traditional sacred nonsense “Jesus Christ, we believe is God incarnate who came, died a death on a cross, and then rose again on the third day,” like listener Peter Green says, to the surprising number of regular churchgoers who believe Jesus was a great teacher but not divine.

“Whether or not in fact he is divine, and the son of God, is actually, well, it’s a little irrelevant to me personally,” says listener Jennifer Hudson. Today, On Point: The voices we don’t often hear in American Christianity.
  • Guests Jonathan Tran, associate professor of philosophical theology and George W. Baines Chair of Religion at Baylor University
  • Jua Robinson, co-founder and executive director of Boston Collaborative, an organization that connects workplace Christians to each other and the Boston community. Chaplain of the New England Patriots. Also Featured Scott McConnell, executive director at LifeWay Research.
  • Kelli Masters, director of children’s ministry at Wayne Presbyterian Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
Part I

HOST MEGHNA CHAKRABARTI
: For decades, when covering the views of American Christians, the media, including this show, have often focused on right wing Christianity, largely because of its significant political influence. Think of groups such as the Christian Coalition, the Moral Majority, Focus on the Family, just to name a small few. And more recently, the rise of Christian nationalist extremism cannot be denied, especially after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

SCOTT McCONNELL: A growing movement led by right wing politicians is increasingly challenging a centuries old value of America’s political system, the separation of church and state. During the January 6th attack on the Capitol, there were Trump banners and confederate flags, the Gadsden flags. There’s also Christian imagery. The wooden cross, people in prayer, the “Jesus saves” slogan.

CHAKRABARTI: And while these groups dominate media coverage of Christianity, and for good reason, they also represent only a fraction of the more than 60% of Americans who identify themselves as followers of the Christian faith. And American Christians overall have a spectrum of belief as broad and diverse. As the country they live.

In fact, many American Christians profess beliefs that their more conservative fellow churchgoers find outright heretical. We have a biblically heretical statement that says the Bible, like all sacred writings, contains helpful accounts of ancient myths, but it is not literally true. AUDIO: wbur.org/onpoint

Ancient Christian SEX beliefs were wild

GMS, Oct. 28, 2023; Sheldon S., Ashley Wells, Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Our man in the Vatican is going to need this for the Whore of Babylon. It's all in the Book. Go have a look and don't criticize me, dummies! It is the future, and you will do what you're told, or else.
(Genetically Modified Skeptic) Ancient Christians had WILD beliefs about sexuality and gender. Here are five of them.
  1. Was Adam androgynous (both male and female)?
  2. What did the apostle Paul say about sex?
  3. What does Christianity say about gender roles?
  4. Was sex allowed in early Christianity?
  5. In the Christian future, we'll all be nonbinary?
Christian theologian Origen believed in reincarnation from his teacher
Ammonius Sacca (Saka A'muni or Shakyamuni who is the Buddha)

I lived surrounded by only men and loved it.
GMS discusses all of these issues, citing the writings of Paul, the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, Polemon the Stoic, Acts of Thecla, and more.

END is near: Christianity as doomsday cult

MythVision Podcast, 10/1/22; Sheldon S., Seth Auberon (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly

The Jesus Cult: 2,000 Years of the Last Days
(MythVision Podcast) Christian apologists [explainers] work hard to defend the resurrection [rebirth] of Jesus, despite the woefully poor descriptions of the supposed event in the New Testament [part of the Bible].

Just read they Bible and OBEY!
👉 Apologists could probably also rise to the challenge of proving that the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella really did transform a pumpkin into a carriage.

It's no surprise that the apologist literature defending the resurrection is enormous, but there has been considerable pushback from secular writers -- as well as from religious biblical scholars who can live with a metaphorical understanding of the resurrection.

But the task for the curious reader trying to cut through all this clutter has been made easy by Robert Conner's The Jesus Cult: 2000 Years of the Last Days.

As the title suggests, Conner incisively demonstrates that a crucial element in early Christian belief that the arrival of Jesus on clouds was any day now is just plain wrong.

Conner also pulls together the New Testament texts that show just how incoherent the resurrection stories are: no wonder the apologists have to work so hard in their sophistry.

In a very engaging conversational writing style, Conner shows the ongoing damage into our own times that the Jesus Cult causes.

This book is a must-read for Christians who are curious enough about their faith to engage in some due diligence.

World's first "Hypno-Magician"? (video)

Imad the Hypno Magician; Dhr. Seven, Pat Macpherson, Sheldon S. (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
.
He's from another world! 😱
(Imad Magician Official) Feb. 7, 2023. Move over, David Blaine. We don't need you anymore. Here's the first "Hypno Magician" in the world.

COMMENTARY
Is it the power of God? Is it the power of His brother? Is it the devas? Is it the "black arts"? Maybe it's just stagecraft and sleight of hand? Anything is possible.

Real Magic (Dean Radin)
And the trick, as famous David Blaine demonstrated when he began his career, is that one seems to be doing it in front of a live audience who is not in on it. No one said they weren't. It's just filmed -- and refilmed (and touched up) -- that way. The proof is in seeing. But what are we seeing? Seeing is believing. You saw, and you still don't believe. So we'll guess it's not.

Don't be distracted by my beautiful assistant.
No proof is good enough. And it never will be. Hey, Krissy Chris (our resident Christian), when does the Antichrist arrive? When is The Apocalypse of Armageddon and Revelation, the unveiling? It's time to watch American Dad again to learn about the myth of "The Rapture" to come in Christianity.

Gen Z finding (or rejecting) religion

Austin Cross, AirTalk, 3/3/23 (LAist); Sheldon S., Ashley Wells (eds.), Wisdom Quarterly
Fail! I'm tired of this bullsh*t church service and that patriarch telling us what to believe.

Say a little prayer for Gen Z: How young folks are finding (or moving away from) religion
How to Know God (Patanjali)
For more than two weeks in February, Christian college Asbury University hosted a round-the-clock [Christian] religious revival, making headlines (washingtonpost.com) across the world and inspiring other colleges to host revivals of their own.

But wait a minute, aren’t Zoomers (Gen Z members) supposed to be less religious? While there is a general trend towards disaffiliation from religion, digging into the data paints a more complicated picture of a generation [an artificial demographic segmentation in the US by age] in flux.

How has living in a time of tremendous social change influenced Gen Z’s attitudes towards religion --organized or otherwise? And within this generation, how does religious feeling differ between certain groups?

What if I tone down the smiting, Sinners?
Joining in to answer these questions and more are Director Daniel A. Cox of the Survey Center on American Life and a senior fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute, and Executive Director Richard Flory of the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture.

I don't believe in "conspiracies"! (video)

Eds., Wisdom Quarterly; Mike MacRae, Jimmy Dore (jimmydoreshow.com, 5/21/20); VAXXED
In England you get warned. In the U.S. you're on your own (rense.com).
.
It's OK, I'm a sell out.
But I don't believe in "conspiracies."

I only believe what my government tells me to believe, and my pastor (unless he's quoting the weird parts of the Bible about ghosts, space aliens, UFOs, and miracles), and my relatives, unless it's my weird uncle.

I only accept officially vetted stories from "reliable" authorities who are part of the consensus reality, and if I can check it on Wikipedia or official sources.
