6mm Prussian Landwehr by Adler

With most of my painting time now used for none wargaming projects it was nice to take a step back into an old project and paint up some more Prussians for my 100 Days Prussian Army. I say 100 Days as these did not even show up at Waterloo as I have all those already painted.

As per most of my Landwehr we have Baccus skirmishers and Adler for the main body. A few of the bases also have mounted generals to add interest.

Three battalions leading the way, 4th Westphalia 1st Corp Second Brigade, only nine battalions of the Corp made a showing at Waterloo, though some cavalry and guns did. Of the infantry I only have nine reserve and three Landwehr battalions to complete the infantry as well as a regiment of cavalry and two guns then one Corp is fully finished.
The 4th Corp just needs four cavalry regiments painting to be finished but that's because most of that Corp was at Waterloo. I have the figures to do most of the remaining units to have the lot painted up. The fact I will never need all these units for any battle remains a mute point now. Given the amount of money needed to get all the units I don't have I simply don't see the point of not doing them all.

The 3rd Elbe Landwehr regiment from the second Corp, 8th Brigade. This needs six battalions of Reserve Infantry three regiments of cavalry and four guns (2 batteries) to complete. Third Corp is the one needing the most work with 21 battalions of Reserve or Landwehr infantry six regiments of cavalry and six guns including a horse battery. These will probably be the ones finished last, well unless Lee suddenly wants to fight a battle that these were in!!!

I know it's kind of pointless painting up all these battalions when in many of the cases I can just sub a different battalion without much chance of being pulled up for using the wrong battalion based on collar or cuff being wrong but at least I can fantasise about using them all in a sweeping campaign.

I also painted up a couple more command bases. At some point I need to check how many I have so to make sure I can supply enough for any battle. Our rule system requires a fair few. Next up for this army is a couple of cavalry regiments but they are being bumped down the list as other projects need work doing on them.

15mm Companion Cavalry For Sale

Another two units finished but this time in 15mm. These are from Magister Militum from the Chariot Miniatures range. Chariot have been my favourite Ancient figures from when I first got into Ancients in my late teens. Though in those days I was building my Persian army using the WRG rules. That was a tough gig.

I plan to sell these for £30 a unit post paid in the UK or £55 for the pair post paid. Outside the UK I would charge any postage at cost over £5.00 They were for my army but I don't really need them and to be honest it will help with the shortfall of my wage which actually is more like 50% not the 80% talked about due to commission etc that I would also have earnt.

I really love the realistic pike like lances that these guys are equipped with. They do rather get in the way when painting but it's worth it.

I have done my usual basing of sand and masonry paint drybrushed and then flocked and added three different coloured tufts.

The guys on the right are actually Prodromoi but these I have based up as standard cavalry. I do have a unit of these as light cavalry but they don't do well in Hail Caesar and to be fair they don't stick out much.

Good job the lances straighten without the paint popping off, these I did not notice until looking at the photo's.

So in HC and Field of Glory this would be a unit whilst DBA and DBM your looking at four!!

Not the bright yellow you see on a lot of cloaks of companions. Personally I am a bit sceptic of those. Typical of a basic paint job it's ink over a flat colour but looks alright.

The second unit's a bit more punchy in colour but not smack you in the face bright. I actually prefer these to the first unit.

Three of these have silver helmets to break them up a little. The first unit has two silver helmets. Looking at images on the nett I saw a fair few with mixed colours.

All these boys have leopard skins for saddle cloths, they were fun to paint lol. I still have a few units worth of other Greek cavalry (and others) and three or four units worth of hoplites so I may well be visiting 15mm Ancients again in the coming weeks.

Prussian Reserve Regiment 22 Adler Miniatures

Anyone who has followed this blog over the years will have seen a few Prussian Battalions shown here. I am still working through all the regiments that did not fight at Waterloo but were involved in the 100 days campaign.

The 22nd Regiment was part of Pirch's 2nd Corps and whilst the rest of the 7th Brigade fought at Waterloo under the command of Brause the 22nd missed the action.

I continue to add flags to battalions that all most certainly did not have them but given I was well into the originals before I realised that why not continue. I still left the third battalion without even though it's not a fusilier battalion but that's me.

The standard depiction of our units of 4 skirmishers out front with 24 figures in the main body. These being Adler you get a little more Varity in poses. The skirmishes have three poses and the main body two or more versions to buy from.

One battalion I adopted a three deep line and two battalions have a mounted officer to add to the Varity. Basing is my normal outdoor paint (bitter chocolate tester from Homebase) with sand dribbled over, left to dry and surplus brushed off. I then drybrush a couple of lighter colours then add static grass and tufts.

I still have 44 more battalions to do so no where near finished, plus more artillery and cavalry but in far fewer quantity. Not that I own all the battalions required so I will paint up what I have before getting any more. This certainly moved onto a vanity project as I really do not need to paint up the rest and will never get them all on the table at the same time. I still also have plenty of French I really don't need as well as plenty of British to paint for my son.

The next up on the table will be two units of Companion cavalry I also don't really need :-)

6mm Napoleonic Prussian Artillery

To follow on from the last post on French SYW Artillery I felt I had to go with my latest addition to my Prussian Napoleonic Artillery.

I don't need a massive amount more artillery for my Prussians in total so these are a bit of a tidy up. All four guns and crews are Baccus, the limbers are from Commission Figurines and the horses and riders are Adler. Yes the bits box was raided!

The Adler bits were actually bought ready painted  but were missing some of the limbers (some were used as wrecked ones on bases due to damage) so I broke into a pack of Commission Figurines as I can still use the horses etc without the limbers.

As you would expect these did not take much time to paint up and are now tucked away in a box awaiting future play. Problem is that I have enough for Waterloo which is about as big as my Prussians are likely to get for a long time yet. However my Prussians are not really about painting for a game so much as I have them and want to carry on till I have enough for the whole of 100 days campaign and possibly then look at earlier campaigns, who knows. Whilst it's fun I will continue to paint the odd unit or battery up.

At the moment I have the last of the infantry and cavalry for our game for Joy of Six in a couple of months. The plan is to have them all finished before the end of this month and then sit back and enjoy painting just what I want, expect a right mix of toys.

Three Prussian Landwehr Battalions

I continue to expand the Prussians for the 100 Days Campaign with the three battalions of the 3rd Westphalie from the I Corp, 3rd Brigade. You Napoleonic experts will note that these did not get to fight at the Battle of Waterloo itself but did take part in the campaign.

These for the most part are Adler figures but as Adler do not do a skirmish figure for the Landwehr I have used Baccus for these. I have painted up the three battalions in column as Adler just don't base well and the spacing is all wrong to have them in a two deep line though I sometimes do the Prussians in a three deep line.

As often mentioned here Adler do excellent little figures, the animation and detail make them a joy to paint but a devil to clean up. When I am finished my Prussian army will be about 80% Adler, whilst my French are about 90% Baccus. Maybe one day I will get all of both armies out and take a group shot.

I think of the Adler infantry for the Prussians the Landwehr are the nicer figures. With the mix of blanket roll and bread bag these are more interesting. Of course painting a few thousand of the buggers does take the shine off them.

I don't see me finishing them all off in the next twelve months, nor even probably in the next twenty four but you never know. I don't have much left to do with regards the Cavalry or Artillery it's mostly infantry and possibly a few command stands but with other projects also demanding time I will have to make a conscious effort to keep these ticking over.

Back To The Prussian Napoleonic's in 6mm

I continue to flip back and forwards between 6mm and 15mm each week of the Challenge and that continues with these Adler Prussians.

I am now looking to fill out the other Corp's that did not fight at Waterloo but did fight during the 100 days campaign. These are some of the more interesting of the as yet unpainted regiments as they are German-Russian and whilst wearing Prussian cut uniforms the coats were Russian Green. A nice splash of colour.

I used Landwehr figures as these seemed the best match. The regiments had the usual three battalions, two standard and one fusilier.  They are numbered 30th and 31st regiments.

As per expectations the Adler have a great amount of detail. I am looking forward to the few times I will get to use these guys. Such is the lot of strange units.

I have been having issues with my computer and am now having to use Cath's so posts are somewhat lacking until I get the computer replaced.

Adler Prussian Cuirassiers

Meant to post about these last week, seems I have been too busy painting instead. I had enough figures left to paint up a further three regiments to add to the two I already had painted over a year ago.

Prussia had four regiments at the time of Waterloo but they were with the other army that never got involved. Mine are for a what if scenario and other earlier battles so the fifth regiment may come in useful.

All five are painted up the same so nothing much to add really. Typically lovely looking minis that are a bugger to clean up but rewarding once painted.

These have been packed away as I won't get the chance to use them for awhile. Next 6mm game will either be Ancients or Waterloo if things stay the same.

We played a game towards the end of last year with over 100 battalions of infantry and a fair amount of cavalry and it played well so we need to get the big game played out and see just how it goes.

2nd Silesian Landwehr by Adler Finished

Another three Landwehr battalions finished and again they are Adler Miniatures. This will probably the last Prussian's I do for a while, too many other projects that need my time. That said, as soon as I get the urge I will paint a few more up, after all it's not like I am short of figures.

The 2nd Silesian Landwehr was another regiment of the IV Corps that did not take part in the battle of Waterloo despite this being the most engaged Corps of the whole army. No worries as I will find some use for these at some point.

I could not face cutting all the figures off their bases and sticking them on one at a time so I put this unit in a three deep column, even inserting a mounted officer into the front line.

I used three flags that were the same for this regiment, it's a pain not really knowing which flags (if any) they carried but at least these are attributed to some Silesian units.

The second battalion look brighter but it's just the sun popped out for a few seconds. After well over a thousand sets of straps painted on 6mm figures I am starting to feel comfortable with the task. I can even say I no longer hate painting reigns on horses, though having twelve regiments on my painting desk waiting for that very job could change that again.

The 3rd battalion feeling a little homesick brought along a tree from home. OK not from home but from Leven Miniatures who will be selling them fairly soon. Lee occasionally adds trees to his bases but it's not something I have been too fond of but I do like the result so might start to do it more often.

The next 6mm I will be doing for myself will either be ECW to keep company the ones I am about to start for Lee or it will be the next two pike blocks I plan for my Ancient army.

None 6mm I have a few Zed's awaiting attention, a 15mm Pike Phalanx and another of Hoplites for my Macedonian and Persian armies respectfully. I have figures for another two pike blocks after those so I hope to get all these done before deciding if I will also go for more for BIG battles.

Adler Prussian Cuirassiers

I really move away from Project Waterloo with today's post, Prussian Cuirassiers. Whilst Prussia still had a number of Cuirassier regiments none were with the army that fought between 16th and 18th June. These are a nod towards using my Prussians for other battles and time scale. Ultimately I want to paint up the full thirteen regiments though I only have enough for five regiments at the moment.

This is the 1st Regiment, they should have poppy red facings, so I used the brightest red I have (Vallejo Game Colour Blood Red). I have painted both regiments in their campaign uniforms rather than the white of the dress uniform. I really don't see the point of painting up figures for battle in dress uniform though I probably mix the two types through my collection.

2nd Regiment looks very similar to the 1st, it's typical of the Prussians that their Cuirassiers are the most drab of all the nations that have them in their army. The lack of a shiny back and breast and even the helmets are black. All that said they have a certain charm in their frugal way.

The facings and blankets are darker than the 1st Regiment and I went with the old trusty Vallejo Flat Red. I have used ten figures on each base to try and make the mass effect and put them boot to boot on the base. My normal number is nine figures and it's surprising the difference one figure makes.

You can just about make out the colour difference in the two facing colours. As the figures are wearing gauntlets the cuffs are covered so you only get the red on the blanket, saddle cloth, pistols and collar. Still it lifts them up enough to stop them sinking into the background.

I won't be painting up the other three I have in hand for a bit as I have other figures to get painted, but if I find I need a few more for a game then I can dash them off quick enough.

Adler Prussian Landwehr

These Adler Landwehr seemed to take forever to finish but here they are at last. The 2nd Landwehr Infantry Regiment of Pomerania was part of the IV Corps 14th Infantry Brigade. I don't know how involved it was in the 100 days campaigns though it looks to not have had anything notable happen to it.

1st Battalion, the flags are all just generic Landwehr flags as typically little is known of them if they indeed carried any at all.

I have used line skirmishers as Adler do not supply Landwehr skirmishers, hopefully this will change for when the range is re-sculptured in the future. The Landwehr themselves need this as a number of the strips were quite heavy with flash. Not a deal breaker but when you are cleaning up six battalions worth in one go it can be tiresome.

Once cleaned up of course you have some lovely looking figures. The second battalion I reversed the flag which was quite common.

These have no role to play in our Waterloo game but do come close to rounding off the IV Corp which had the most troops committed to the Waterloo battle. I will be filling out all four Corps as time rolls on by though if we decide to do some of the Prussian battles from the campaign this will be accelerated somewhat.

I spoilt the 3rd Battalion giving them two mounted officers. Either that or they are getting a rollicking from higher up, seems the guy in blue is pointing with attitude.

I still have enough figures for another twenty one battalions of Landwehr so  I can work on these guys without worrying about running out of figures.

I have another Regiment to blog about and two cavalry regiments. After that I will for the time being be concentrating on my Ancients for my own collection (in three scales) though I have more Napoleonic's for Steve and Sunbeam on the desk at the moment.

Week One of the Analogue Painting Challenge Is In The Books

So the first week has now passed in the challenge and 27 of the 71 participants have now had at least one set submitted and with the Bonus round deadline around the corner you can expect that number to leap up further.
For myself I got in a bucket load of 6mm (no surprise) and a few bits for Saga. Last night saw me finish off twelve more 28's that are for the bonus round, though the final work of adding snow is about to happen. This is possibly the best start I have had in the four years I have been involved. Not only that but I am off work now till Wednesday so should get more done over this week.

The end of the first week see's me in 7th place with 120 points, that has me ahead of target especially if you add the 60 points I will get for the 12 figures just finished and my second aim is to finish in the top twenty if possible. Time spent on this? In an attempt to keep track in a wacky way I am keeping tabs by music. A total of 324 songs have played whilst I have painted or prepped (not blogged) since the challenge started!

Another part of the first entry was these Prussian guns, all 12 will be needed for the big game and are added to the ones already painted finishing off yet another required part of the troops required.

Four each are Adler and Baccus and like the Landwehr I have quite a few left over in my Prussian to paint box so will revisit them when I continue on the Prussian army at some point next year.

So what's next for the challenge? I plan to finish off the Prussian's then if I have done that fast enough will move onto a few 15mm fr the first time in a year before hoping onto the second bonus round. I think this challenge will be more the year of the larger scales though I don't plan starting the 32mm till post challenge as I plan to spend a lot of time on each figure.
