Petagas War Memorial

Kota Kinabalu

Petagas War Memorial is a monument to the Kinabalu Guerillas who died in an uprising against the occupying Japanese forces in 1944. The guerillas, a combination of local ethnic groups comprising Chinese, Bajaus, Dusuns and Sikhs, launched the 'Jesselton Revolt' in 1943, but ultimately failed and surrendered not long after. The guerillas were then executed and buried at this very spot the next year.

Today, the garden houses their remains on a grassy plot with a monument in front that remembers their names on a plaque. The memorial park is located at Putatan township about 7km south of KK City, across some train tracks along Jalan Kepayan Highway (airport road).
