While in high school Lon was given a water damaged home movie camera. After he was able to repair and use the camera, he decided to pursue a career in the motion picture equipment business. He first learned the trade at a Nikon Service Facility, then was trained on Arriflex and Panavision equipment at Victor Duncan Inc. in Detroit and Chicago. In 1984 he opened Stratton Camera Inc., a camera rental company in Detroit, Michigan and also worked as a camera assistant. He began shooting in 1987 and became an International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600) Director of Photography in 1991.
