Joseph references "binders full of women" during this episode. "Binders full of women" was a quote from Mitt Romney during his 2012 presidential run. It was used in response to a question about pay equity. He insinuated that his governor's office had binders of resumes from women. Joseph uses it tongue-in-cheek, regarding his subversive attempts to save women detainees by making them Marthas, by reviewing their histories and information.

Welcome Change of Pace

This episode disposes with the plain black and white moralizing, finally punishing the protagonist's shallow boldness with what should be an easy ethical question. It also exemplifies how Commander Lawrence is by far the best addition to the show, adding a flair and unpredictability to the stale distopia that is Gilead.
