New Terrain

The two story lines are similar to two infamous real-life incidents that were later the subject of true crime documentaries. The main plot involves a bank robbery in which the robber claimed he was forced to participate while wearing an explosive device locked to his body. This resembles the subject of "Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist" (2018). A secondary plot, in which Ariel Dubois has a vision of her schoolmate dying in a car crash when her mother drives in the wrong direction on a highway while under the influence of drugs, alludes to "There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane (2011), which tells the true story of Diane Schuler who crashed a mini-van while driving in the wrong direction on New York's Taconic State Parkway, resulting in the death of herself and seven others.

In "Medium" (2008) {Car Trouble (#4.14)} Allison's car breaks and Joe tells her it would cost more to fix it than it's worth, and tries to persuade her into buying a new one. Allison gets upset by the idea and reminds him that it was the first car they bought together and that they brought their daughters from the hospital with it. Now the same car gets totaled after an accident and again Joe tries to reason with Allison that she should get a new car, only this time she reminds him that her father gave her the car when she graduated from college.
