Because this was live television, this program has an unusual incident recorded forever. Jack is running for president of the Beverly Hills Beaver, and his campaign manager (Harry Shearer as Everett), along with his kid brother Jimmy, has stopped by to discuss the voting. After Jack misquotes several historical figures, there is a long pause as Jack seems to be waiting for the next line. "Well", he says to Jimmy, "Havent'cha got a line?" Shearer begins to break up. Jack: "What?" Jimmy: "It's your line." Jack: "My line? What's my line?" Jack leans in, expecting the boy to whisper; Shearer laughs even more. From off camera, Rochester says, "Let's not fight about this thing, boss." Jack: "Oh, I had the line!" The resulting audience laughter covers what Jack and Shearer are saying to Jimmy. Jack ad-libs, "What are you nervous about. You're younger than I am." Finally, Jack realizes that what Rochester had said is actually the line he was supposed to say. "Now look, let's not fight about it. I have enough hard work to do as it is." Jimmy then asks Everett, "Do I have to vote for him? He doesn't know anything." Everett replies, "I'm getting a little leery myself." Jack finishes it off by commenting to Everett, "Oh, that was his line." Everett nods.

Jack Runs For President

Jack's running for president of the Beverly Hills Beaver Club. He's got a campaign manager and even lollipops he passes out to prospective voters. That's right, the club's for, you guessed it, young boys. But will Jack win. After all, he's up against another big vote getter of the time, George Gobel. Together they campaign in the clubhouse—actually a basement where wash is hung out to dry.

It's a laugh-filled ridiculous entry from that master of the deadpan— in fact, was there ever a comedian who got more laughs from simply reacting wordlessly. I guess that made things easier for his writers. Anyway, he gets ample opportunity as the embarrassments keep coming. Gobel had a meteoric career that soon leveled out. Here, he's near his popular peak. The entry also capitalizes on the presidential election then only a week away. For younger folks, Eisenhower trounced Stevenson to easily win a second term. All in all, it's a solid series entry. Meanwhile, I'm headed back to school. So catch the episode and find out why.
