Are you ready to go back to Hell?
Nearly 25 years ago, the first "DOOM" game exploded into mainstream culture with floating demon heads and zombified space marines. And in 2016, "DOOM" is back:
That's just one of the many, many demons you'll face down in the new "DOOM" game that launches on May 13. Not big and scary enough for ya?
As grizzly as these monsters may be, they're part of a painstakingly-detailed world — and we've got a mess of concept art from that world right here:
The new "DOOM," like the original "DOOM," stars an unnamed space marine who finds himself fighting off the armies of Hell.
What this translates to in terms of artwork is what you see here — loads of red-ish, dark environments that are ripped straight from your nightmares:
The game (thankfully) doesn't start you out in the dankest pits of Hell. First, you'll explore a space base that's overrun with demons:
This isn't an existential Hell, but a literal interpretation of the Christian Hell found in the Christian Bible:
Hell stands in glaring contrast to the shiny space base the game is otherwise set in.
The space base is built on Mars, and this is the first piece of concept art that hints at the game's story. The demons were apparently getting experimented on! No wonder they're so angry!
The facilities on Mars are relatively large, and are clearly oriented towards getting work done over living comfortably.
The pits of Hell are certainly more exciting to look at. This one, dubbed the "Necropolis," features a giant devil skull in the middle!
Here he is, the Devil himself, looking villainous as ever.
So, how does your lowly space marine end up in Hell? An interdimensional portal, of course. Here's the one you'll traverse in the new "DOOM."
The humans on Mars before you got there were doing some seriously funky stuff. Just look at this killer disco ball!
The contrast between impossibly clean, shiny environments and terrifying murder dens is REALLY stark.
At the same time, the eerie quiet of these empty stations is great foreshadowing for the madness to come.
Just imagine rolling through an interdimensional portal only to find THIS on the other side.
Here, we see the same sun that fills the sky of Earth, albeit in a far more spooky light than usual. "The odd colors of the setting sun are to give the player a sense of unease and that something is not quite right with this world," concept artist Ryan Watkins says of this vista.
With "DOOM" launching so soon, there's a new video depicting just how crazy the game will be. Check it out right here.
