St. Patrick's Day Toilet Paper Roll Crafts

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner so I thought I'd do a quick round up of some past craft project.  Here are a few of my favorite St. Patrick's Day crafts that the kids and I have done over the years.

St. Patrick's Day Rainbow and Pot of Gold Toilet Paper Roll Craft

It's March and that means St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner.  Here's a rainbow and pot of gold craft that we loved making.

Pot of Gold Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, paper plate, tissue paper, markers, glue, scissors, glitter glue

Begin by cutting your paper plate into an arch.  I drew a line for each color of the rainbow and then let Cole fill in the appropriate color.

Color in your rainbow.

Cut your toilet paper roll in half and paint it black.  Allow to dry.  Trim the end of your rainbow so that it will fit down inside the tube.  Add some wadded up tissue paper and paint a little glitter glue on top to give it that gold sparkle.

Book Suggestion: My daughter loves the book What Makes a Rainbow?  Right now it's one that she insists on bringing in the car with her whenever we go somewhere.  This is a great board book for kids just learning their colors or for talking about what colors make up a rainbow.

Toilet Paper Roll St. Patrick's Day Leprechaun

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
First of all I would like to apologize for a lack of pictures that go with this post.  I'm pretty sure I took them, but I have no idea where they disappeared to.  Oh well, you can still get the idea behind the craft.  In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I give you the Toilet Paper Roll Leprechaun.
Toilet Paper Roll Leprechaun Supply List: 1 toilet paper roll, green paint, green construction paper, scissors, piece of round construction paper to use as face, Easter grass or yarn for beard, tape
Start by painting your cardboard tube green and allowing it to dry.  Cut a circle out of green construction paper and then trace a smaller circle in the middle using the cardboard tube as a template.
Draw a face on the piece of round construction paper.
Slip the green circular piece over the toilet paper roll and adhere it using a piece of tape.  Don't bother trying to glue it, you'll be there all day.  Glue the round face and beard onto the green tube.
Viola!  A small St. Patrick's Day friend.

Book Suggestion: The Night Before St. Patrick's Day by Natasha Wing follows two mischievous children as they set traps to catch a leprechaun on the eve of St. Patrick's Day.  Once they have captured one, they then try to find his pot of gold.  I'm a sucker for anything set in the same verse as The Night Before Christmas, and this book is no exception.

Cardboard Tube Snake

Since Thursday is St. Patrick's Day this is a great activity you can use to discuss with kids the history of the holiday.  According to legend, St. Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland.  This was a fun craft that Cole loves to play with.

Snake Supply List: 1 paper towel roll or 2 toilet paper rolls, paint, hole punch, google eyes, piece of red pipe cleaner, string or ribbon
Start by painting your cardboard tube.  Cole choose to mix black and blue with orange for his snake.
Cut your tube into 6 or 7 smaller pieces.  Cole wanted to try to cut it himself but it was too thick for him to do it independently.
Punch 4 holes on each piece of cardboard roll, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom.
To connect the piece of tube I used a clothing tagger.  Since I don't anticipate that many people have these laying around I would recommend using string or ribbon to connect your pieces.
Add your eyes and punch a small hole to thread the red pipe cleaner through as a tongue.
Your snake is now ready to slither around the house or outside in the grass!

Book Suggestion: Verdi by Janell Cannon has always been one of our favorites.  Cole's favorite part is when Verdi practices making a figure 8 in the air.  With beautiful vivid pictures and a heartwarming story it is one I consider a must read.
