Sad news (and freaky!)

Sam, 3 time winner of "the Word's Ugliest Dog" contest, has passed away. He was 15 years old. Owner Susie Lockheed said she initially was terrified of Sam when she agreed to take him in as a rescue dog. Although she fell in love with him, his appearance repulsed her then-boyfriend and prompted the man to break up with her.

Later, however, Sam became a matchmaker by bringing together Lockheed and her current beau, who saw a picture of the two on an online dating site. er, ok.

You know, one of our art professors back in undergrad had a cat that makes Sam look like the cutest thing ever. I still have nightmares of watching that frankenkitty.

The USPS has announced some cool stamps for next year:

Dig em! I like that its a mix from the different Comic Eras; Golden Age, Silver Age, Modern Age...

This added with the MUPPETS stamps, the U.S. is finally starting to have some cool stamps for us dorky citizens! Before, we had to geek on foreign stamps like Mongolia's X-MEN or the REPUBLIQUE TOGOLAISE's super sweet ALIEN stamps (which I have, thanks to ebay. heheh)

My first viewing of King Kong is also one of my very first memories. I was about 3 or 4 years old, not in any kind of school yet (preschool or kindergarten). It was a warm summer night in Maryland. Fireflies filled the dark backyard, the sounds of crickets in the bushes and treeline, and a gorgeous sky of countless stars (remember when we could see stars in the sky?!).
My mom and older brother put the small black and white TV outside on the back patio, up on a chair. We brought our pillows, sleeping bags and blankets out onto the carport, made popcorn and watched the movie. It was the most amazing, intense thing I had ever seen. Imagine, I'm just beginning to see the World and Life and I'm exposed to this brilliant, imaginitive film!!!!! I can say without a doubt, that night King Kong set me on the path that defines my personality and interests Today.

Terra had never seen the original before, so I was very excited to show it to her. I hadn't seen the movie myself in what... 15-20years? Would it hold up? Well, we watched it this past saturday on dvd and it still rocks!!! There isn't a thing I'd change. I'd even go as far to say the movie is one of my 3 favorite movies of all time. It has everything you'd want in a movie: Skull Island! Stop-motion dinosaurs, pterodactyls and giant lizards, all fighting Kong! Crazed Tribals in ritual getups and face paint! A giant fortress wall! Sexy blonde damsel in distress! Awesome airplanes with machine guns! King Kong himself, King of Skull Island!! The stop-motion animation is awesome and has something special to it that is lacking in Today's [CG] animation. Even the composites don't pull me from the film, and this was done in 1933!

The movie is perfect.

Peter Jackson has a very big challenge before him to remake this film. If it was any other director, I think I'd want them to fail at remaking it (like the 1976 remake, although it has its moments), just so the original stays on top. But I really like what Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings movies (wow!), and I'd hate to see him fall short with this. Hopefully, he IS the great filmmaker I think he is. Fingers crossed.

Anyway, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend revisiting King Kong again. If you haven't seen it before, you MUST see it before you see Peter Jackson's. There is no discussion on this, ok?

Ruth M. Siems passed away earlier this month on Nov 13th. Siems was 1 of 4 co-creators of Stove Top Stuffing. She was 74.

There's a new book in Germany about Star Wars called "Die Macht Mit Uns" (The Force With Us). It covers everything from toy collecting to prop creating. It also has a special chapter dedicated to what is apparently a "blossoming interest" in Slave Leia costuming by women fans. Er, ok.

FINALLY!!!! The brilliant, classic, freaking awesome 1933 KING KONG is now available on DVD today!!!! Man, I've been waiting what feels like forever for this bad boy to be released!! The 2disc set includes (to name a few) the flick itself (newly restored), commentary by Ray Harryhausen, a Making of documentary, and creation test footage with Harryhausen commentary.

Peter Jackson's Kong is coming out next month and looks impressive. I'm sure it will be amazing, but for me THIS version is all one needs. If you haven't seen it before (whuh??!!) or haven't seen it in awhile, I highly recommend picking it up for a viewing!

The Crazy Goat Saloon is heeding the call of Gov. Jon Hunsman Jr to reach out to Hurricane Katrina victims. Daniel Darger, the owner, has offered jobs to displaced strippers from New Orleans. "Exotic dancers need work, too" he says, "There are a number of them from the French Quarter in New Orleans who have been displaced."


Darger, the hero that he is, apparently has never been to a strip club in New Orleans I'm assuming. heheh.

The Official 1st day of Holiday Shopping is the day after Thanksgiving.
So here are 3 stupid (yet oddly cool) toys for that special dork in your life: Thing hands, Hulk hands, and King Kong hands.
I recommend the Hulk hands, as I have a pair myself. hahaha

Outside the Swiss museum of H.R. Giger in Gruyères, stands a life-sized statue of an Alien to greet visitors. Well, the town leaders aren't too happy about it and have ordered Giger to remove the statue. Boo on them!!!!

Wow, its been 20 years since "The Hit That No One Who Saw It Can Ever Forget". RFK Stadium, 1985 - Redskins' quarterback Joe Theismann got hit by NY Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor. For those of you who saw it on that night on Monday Night Football, you will remember - Theismann's lower leg bent the wrong way and bone came a-poppin-out, for all the viewers to see! Taylor said he knew immediately after hitting Theismann that it was bad. He even quickly ran to the Redskin' sideline to grab their medical people . It ended Theismann's career right then and there.

To this day, Theismann said he has not seen a replay. He said Taylor has told him he has not watched it either.

Check out these shoes - they are made specifically for sneaking across the border (no, not from Canada silly, from Mexico).
