VA Dada et la Musique
(2005) Various Artists - Dada et la Musique / V0
Produced by the Centre Pompidou in France, specifically to be sold at the recent Dada exhibit there. Includes some classic original works (Schwitters, George Antheil), Raoul Hausmann); the majority are new recordings of original dada works by an European ensemble directed by Johny Fritz. "The Dadaists did their best, by means of agitation and sheer noise, to knock down the idols of an Old World, which had not hesitated to plunge the people of Europe into the bloodiest of wars. But, as they were artists in their inner souls despite their negation of art itself, they could not completely stifle their general movement of destruction to produce works of art. Whether it be in the derisive gluing together of the pieces they had broken asunder, whether it be in the resolute trampling out of all aesthetics. This album proposes several examples of what deliberate cacophony was able to produce in the way of poetry and music, not only in the Dadaist circle, but also among those composers who, at one moment of another in their development, identified themselves with the Dadaist movement." Includes works by: Satie, Germaine Albert-Birot, Hugo Ball, Honegger, Tristan Tzara, Cyril Scott, Jean Arp, Schonberg, Poulenc, Kurt Schwitters, George Antheil, Marinetti, Vincente Huidobro, Milhaud, Max Ernst, Raoul Haussman, Erwin Schulhoff, Richard Huelsenbeck.

Robert Ashley
"Robert Ashley’s opera Atalanta (Acts Of God) is a collection of stories, songs and musical themes arranged into three groups. Each group is focused on the character of an extraordinary man of our times... Max Ernst (surrealist painter)... Willard Reynolds (shaman storyteller)... Bud Powell (composer pianist). The three groups/three men are thematically connected as possible suitors for an extraordinary woman, symbolized by Atalanta." - more info
"These are long stories in the tradition of stories that are to be sung, but are too long to be sung without a musical accompaniment. Without the music (and even with the music) people drop out now and then and so they have to hear the story many times for all of the parts finally to come together. I know a lot of stories in that style from my childhood. It’s a wonderful way to hear a story. Now, with recording, the story can be heard many times." - Robert Ashley

José Afonso
(1985) Galinhas do Mato / 192k
"Unable to sing due to the progressive development of his disease, José Afonso releases at the end of 1985 a new LP with original tunes. Only two of the ten themes which compose this record are interpreted by Afonso - the remaining tracks feature Helena Vieira (Tu Gitana), Né Ladeiras (Benditos), Luís Represas (Agora) Janita Salomé (Moda do Entrudo, Tarkovsky, Alegria da Criação), Catarina e Marta Salomé (Galinhas do Mato) and José Mário Branco (Década de Salomé, in partnership with Afonso). A wide range of friend decided to support the artist in this new endeavor, contributing to bring life to this impressive work by José Afonso. It is without effort that one would say that Galinhas do Mato is a great record, and not even the physical difficulties of its author which made him unable to directly participate in were able to eradicate the splendor and sincerity of this work. This proves that the words and music of José Afonso are able to resist to anything, even the absense of voice, shut down by such a foolish disease." Viriato Teles
VA Made To Measure Vol.1
"The inaugural release of the Made To Measure series includes pieces by four artists:
Aksak Maboul's "Un Chien mérite une mort de chien" is clearly inspired by the subject matter of the play it was written for (Vladimir Mayakovsky and the Russian Futurists), while their strangely melodic minimal turntablist piece "Scratch Holiday" (entirely generated with a turntable, a vinyl 7" single from the '60s and some orange marmalade) is allegedly the soundtrack of a Honeymoon Killers holiday movie;
Tuxedomoon's obsessive "Verdun" comes from the soundtrack of a Dutch movie about the famous WW1 battlefield;
Minimal Compact's elegant "Pieces For Nothing" were created for a dance performance by choreographer Pierre Droulers;
Benjamin Lew's piece ("A la Recherche de B.") was the soundtrack for a fashion exhibition." - Crammed Discs
ZNR
Barricade 3 (1976) • ReR Megacorp
"The debut ZNR LP has long remained one of my all-time faves. A collision of eccentric Satie-esque miniatures, strange, amateurish keyboard/synth explorations and the occasional song, delivered in a mixture of French and Spanish tongues. I always think of the creepy, over-ripe vocals on Seynete as one of the LP’s most memorable moments, but there are many. A genuine hybrid of weirdness and beauty, Barricade 3 has kept me entertained for the better part of 18 years." - Graham Lambkin (The Shadow Ring)

The Shadow Ring
"To enter the world of the Shadow Ring is to enter a surreal anti-world of bizarre song structure. Lighthouse will rank with Trout Mask Replica and Tago Mago as both one of the most avant garde and the most eccentric double LP's of all time. Unlike those two records, Lighthouse features no instrumental pyrotechnics, instead relying on odd sonic combinations, startling lyrics, and a very painterly use of minimal studio technology. Absolutely essential listening if you are interested in modernist stretching of song form with extraordinary results." - Swill Radio
