- Ixtlán del Río es un municipio ubicado en el sureste del Estado de Nayarit. Se le ha denominado la puerta de nuestro Estado (Nayarit), ya que todo viajero que se encamina hacia cualquier punto del noroeste, o viaja al centro de la República, pasa por esta ciudad. Al norte limita con el municipio de Jala, al noroeste con el municipio de La Yesca, sirviendo de límite natural el Santiago; al este y sureste con el estado de Jalisco, estando en gran parte entre Jalisco e Ixtlán del Río el arroyo de San Antonio. Al suroeste limita con el municipio de Amatlán de Cañas y al oeste con Ahuacatlán. El municipio de Ixtlán ocupa el 17º lugar en extensión territorial de Nayarit, con cerca de 550 kilómetros cuadrados. También, el municipio cuenta con una población considerable a su tamaño con un poco más de treinta mil habitantes, ocupando el lugar número 12° en población a nivel estatal. El municipio está compuesto por el relieve del Valle de Ixtlán, que lo delimitan las Sierra de San Pedro al norte y la de Sierra de Pajaritos al sur. (es)

- Ixtlán del Río is both a municipality and municipal seat in the Mexican state of Nayarit. In 2018 the population of the municipality was 33,289 (35,180 in the municipal seat) and the total area was 581.4 km². Ixtlán, as it is known to locals, is located 149 kilometers south of the state capital Tepic and is connected to that city and Guadalajara by both rail and highway connections. The important coastal highway Route 15 passes through the city, while a toll road passes to the east. Ixtlán has boundaries with the municipalities of La Yesca and Jala in the north; Amatlán de Cañas and the state of Jalisco in the south, Jalisco in the east and Ahuacatlán in the west. The land is mainly mountainous (60%) with some flat lands near the small rivers where the agricultural lands and settlements are located. The climate is hot and sub-humid with rains falling from March to July. The average annual temperature varies between 21 °C and 25 °C, with maximum lows of 0 °C and highs of 48 °C. The average annual rainfall is around 859.8 mm. The economy is based on services, due to the town's location on the important Mexico-Nogales highway, small industries (brickworks, furniture, pottery), and agriculture. The main crops are maize, sorghum, beans, and green chile. There were about 36,000 head of cattle in 1995. South of the city lies Toriles, the most important archaeological site in northwestern Mexico. Here is found the temple of Quetzalcoatl, from the Toltec culture. The ceramic and gold jewelry extracted here can be seen in the Regional Museum of Ixtlán. The Río Grande de Santiago crosses the eastern edge of the municipality but is not to be confused with the larger Río Grande de Santiago of the same name that flows from Jalisco into Nayarit. (en)
