The Coachella Valley (/koʊˈtʃɛlə, koʊ.ə-/ koh-CHEL-ə, koh-ə-) is an arid rift valley in the Colorado Desert of Southern California's Riverside County. The valley may also be referred to as Greater Palm Springsdue to the prominence of the city of Palm Springs. The valley extends approximately 45 mi (72 km) southeast from the San Gorgonio Pass to the northern shore of the Salton Sea and the neighboring Imperial Valley, and is approximately 15 mi (24 km) wide along most of its length. It is bounded on the northeast by the San Bernardino and Little San Bernardino Mountains, and on the southwest by the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains.

Es liegt in der Colorado-Wüste. Klimatisch zeichnet sich die Region durch arides, heißes Klima aus. Die Temperaturen können im Sommer in Extremfällen 50 °C überschreiten. Das Tal wird von Strängen der San-Andreas-Verwerfung durchzogen, die parallel zum Tal verläuft. Geologisch betrachtet stellt das Coachella Valley eine sedimentgefüllte Senke dar. Die von den ersten Europäern angetroffenen Bewohner waren Shoshone sprechende Indianer, die dort Landwirtschaft auf Grundlage von Mais und Kürbis, Melone und Bohnen betrieben, und deren Nachkommen bis heute in Indianerreservaten leben. Die ersten Europäer siedelten sich an der Eisenbahnstrecke an, die ab 1876 durch das Tal verlief. Bald erhielt die Landwirtschaft auch für sie einen wichtigen Stellenwert, da verschiedene Nutzpflanzen im warmen, trockenen Klima gut wuchsen. Eine besondere Bedeutung für das Coachella-Tal hatte hierbei der Dattelanbau. Später gewann auch der Tourismus an Bedeutung, insbesondere Patienten mit Atemwegsbeschwerden wurden vom Wüstenklima angezogen. Ab Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurden zahlreiche Country Clubs und Golfplätze angelegt, infolgedessen entwickelte sich das Tal zu einem Urlaubsort für die Reichen und Berühmten. Besonders bekannt ist das Anwesen Sunnylands. Das Tal umfasst neun Städte, als Hauptort gilt Palm Springs. In addition to Palm Springs and the area's largest city Indio, the valley is home to the resort cities of Cathedral City, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage. Because the valley is a major winter destination, its population fluctuates from almost 500,000 in April to around 200,000 in July and around 800,000 by January. It was estimated in 2013 that 3.5 million conventioneers and tourists visit the valley each year. The Coachella Valley connects with the Greater Los Angeles area to the west via the San Gorgonio Pass, a major transportation corridor, traversed by Interstate 10 and by the Union Pacific Railroad.
