Linux-based PXIe System for the Real-Time Control of New Painting Bumper at CERN / Pimentel, Marco (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Chanavat, Christophe (CERN) ; Gharsa, Thierry (CERN) ; Gräwer, Gregor (CERN) ; Magnin, Nicolas (CERN) ; Voumard, Nicolas (CERN)
In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade Project, the new connection from Linac4, injecting a 160 MeV H⁻ beam into the Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB) requires a set of four slow kicker magnets (KSW) per PSB ring to move the beam on a stripping foil, remove electrons and perform phase space painting. A new multiple-linear waveform generator based on a Marx topology powers each KSW, allowing adjustment of the current discharge shape with high flexibility for the different beam users. [...]

A Modular Approach for Accelerator Controls Components Deployment for High Power Pulsed Systems / Pavis, Steven (CERN) ; Barlow, Roger (CERN) ; Boucly, Christophe (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Chanavat, Christophe (CERN) ; Lolliot, Christophe (CERN) ; Magnin, Nicolas (CERN) ; Van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) ; Voumard, Nicolas (CERN)
As part of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project, the controls of the PSB and PS injection kickers at CERN have been upgraded during Long Shutdown 2 (LS2) from heterogeneous home-made electronic solutions to a modular and open architecture. Despite both kickers have significantly different functionalities, topologies and operational requirements, standardized hardware and software control blocks have been used for both systems. [...]

Integration of PLC and PXI control systems / Antoine, Alain (CERN) ; Boucly, Christophe (CERN) ; Gharsa, Thierry (CERN)
Engineers are often challenged with the need to integrate several technologies to find optimal solutions when designing new control architectures. Generally, the technical solutions chosen require the combination of various industrial products such as PXI systems for applications requiring fast acquisition, analysis and reaction times, while PLCs are commonly used for their reliability and their ability to withstand industrial environments. A Generic Timing Software for Fast Pulsed Magnet Systems at CERN / Chanavat, Christophe (CERN) ; Arruat, Michel (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Magnin, Nicolas (CERN)
At CERN, fast pulsed magnet (kicker) systems are used to inject, extract, dump and excite beams. Depending on their operational functionalities and as a result of the evolution of controls solutions over time, the timing controls of these systems were based on hybrid hardware architectures that have resulted in a large disparity of software solutions. A New Hardware Design for PSB Kicker Magnets (KSW) for the 35 mm Transverse Painting in the Horizontal Plane / Feliciano, Luis (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Fowler, Tony (CERN) ; Gräwer, Gregor (CERN) ; Noulibos, Remy (CERN) ; Sermeus, Luc (CERN) ; Weterings, Wim (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
The changeover from Linac2 to Linac4 in CERN’s injector chain will allow increasing the injection energy into the PS Booster from 50 MeV to 160 MeV. Transverse phase space painting will be performed in the horizontal plane, by means of four stacks of four KSW kicker magnets. [...]

SoC Technology for Embedded Control and Interlocking Within Fast Pulsed Systems at CERN / Van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Gauthier, Maxime (CERN) ; Magnin, Nicolas (CERN) ; Oltedal, Eino Juhani (CERN) ; Schipper, Jan (CERN)
The control of pulsed systems at CERN requires often the use of fast digital electronics to perform tight timing control and fast protection of high-voltage pulsed generators. For the implementation of such functionalities, a FPGA is the perfect candidate for the digital logic, however with limited integration potential within the control system. [...]

Upgrade of the Trigger Synchronisation and Distribution System of the Beam Dumping System of the Large Hadron Collider / Magnin, Nicolas (CERN) ; Antoine, Alain (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Chareyre, Vincent (CERN) ; Gabourin, Stéphane (CERN) ; Patsouli, Anastasia (CERN) ; Voumard, Nicolas (CERN)
Various upgrades were performed on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Beam Dumping System (LBDS) during Long Shutdown 1 (LS1) at CERN, in particular to the Trigger Synchronisation and Distribution System (TSDS): A redundant direct connection from the LHC Beam Interlock System to the re-trigger lines of the LBDS was implemented, a fully redundant powering architecture was set up, and new Trigger Synchronisation Unit cards were deployed over two separate crates instead of one. These hardware changes implied the adaptation of the State Control and Surveillance System and an improvement of the monitoring and diagnosis systems, like the various Internal Post Operation Check (IPOC) systems that ensure that, after every beam dump event, the LBDS worked as expected and is 'as good as new' for the next LHC beam. Use of Multi-Network Fieldbus for Integration of Low-Level Intelligent Controller Within Control Architecture of Fast Pulsed System at CERN / Voumard, Nicolas (CERN) ; Boucly, Christophe (CERN) ; Pimentel, Marco (CERN) ; Strobino, Léa (CERN) ; Van Trappen, Pieter (CERN)
Fieldbuses and Industrial Ethernet networks are extensively used for the control of fast-pulsed magnets at CERN. With the ongoing trend to develop increasingly more complex low-level intelligent controllers near to the actuators and sensors, the flexibility to integrate these within different control architectures grows in importance. SPS Beam Dump System (SBDS) Commissioning After Relocation and Upgrade / Van Trappen, Pieter (CERN) ; Carlier, Etienne (CERN) ; Ducimetière, Laurent (CERN) ; Namora, Vasco (CERN) ; Senaj, Viliam (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN) ; Voumard, Nicolas (CERN)
In order to overcome several machine limitations, the SBDS has been relocated from LSS1 (Long Straight Section 1) to LSS5 during LS2 (Long Shutdown 2) with an important upgrade of the extraction kicker installation. An additional vertical deflection kicker magnet (MKDV) was produced and installed while the high voltage (HV) pulse generators have been upgraded by changing gas-discharge switches (thyratrons and ignitrons) to semiconductor stacks operating in oil. Testing Framework for the LHC Beam-based Feedback System / Jackson, Stephen (CERN) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Di Giulio, Letizia (CERN) ; Fuchsberger, Kajetan (CERN) ; Kolad, Blazej (CERN) ; Pedersen, Jens (CERN)
During the first LHC shut-down period, software for the LHC Beam-based Feedback Controller (BFC) and Service Unit (BFSU) was migrated to new 64-bit multi-core hardware and to a new version of CERN's FESA3 real-time framework. This coincided with the transfer of responsibility to a new software team, charged with readying the systems for beam in 2015 as well as maintaining and improving the code-base in the future. [...]
