Data flow and firmware design / Spinella, Franco (INFN, Pisa) ; Angelucci, Bruno (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Lamanna, Gianluca (INFN, Pisa) ; Minuti, Massimo (INFN, Pisa) ; Pedreschi, Elena (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Pinzino, Jacopo (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Piandani, Roberto (INFN, Pisa) ; Sozzi, Marco (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Venditti, Stefano (CERN)
The main goal of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS is to measure the branching ratio of the ultra-rare K+→π+νν decay, collecting about 100 events in two years of data taking to test the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Readout uniformity of sub-detectors, scalability, efficient online selection and lossless high rate readout are key issues. [...]

A high-resolution TDC-based board for a fully digital trigger and data acquisition system in the NA62 experiment at CERN / Pedreschi, Elena (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Angelucci, Bruno (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Avanzini, Carlo (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Galeotti, Stefano (INFN, Pisa) ; Lamanna, Gianluca (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Magazzù, Guido (INFN, Pisa) ; Pinzino, Jacopo (INFN, Pisa) ; Piandani, Roberto (INFN, Pisa) ; Sozzi, Marco (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Spinella, Franco (INFN, Pisa) et al.
A Time to Digital Converter (TDC) based system, to be used for most sub-detectors in the high-flux rare-decay experiment NA62 at CERN SPS, was built as part of the NA62 fully digital Trigger and Data AcQuisition system (TDAQ), in which the TDC Board (TDCB) and a general-purpose motherboard (TEL62) will play a fundamental role. While TDCBs, housing four High Performance Time to Digital Converters (HPTDC), measure hit times from sub-detectors, the motherboard processes and stores them in a buffer, produces trigger primitives from different detectors and extracts only data related to the lowest trigger level decision, once this is taken on the basis of the trigger primitives themselves. NaNet:a low-latency NIC enabling GPU-based, real-time low level trigger systems / Ammendola, Roberto (INFN, Rome2) ; Biagioni, Andrea (INFN, Rome) ; Fantechi, Riccardo (CERN ; INFN, Pisa) ; Frezza, Ottorino (INFN, Rome) ; Lamanna, Gianluca (INFN, Pisa) ; Lo Cicero, Francesca (INFN, Rome) ; Lonardo, Alessandro (INFN, Rome ; Unlisted) ; Paolucci, Pier Stanislao (INFN, Rome) ; Pantaleo, Felice (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.) ; Piandani, Roberto (INFN, Pisa) et al.
We implemented the NaNet FPGA-based PCI2 Gen2 GbE/APElink NIC, featuring GPUDirect RDMA capabilities and UDP protocol management offloading. NaNet is able to receive a UDP input data stream from its GbE interface and redirect it, without any intermediate buffering or CPU intervention, to the memory of a Fermi/Kepler GPU hosted on the same PCIe bus, provided that the two devices share the same upstream root complex. GPU real-time processing in NA62 trigger system / Ammendola, R (INFN, Rome2) ; Biagioni, A (INFN, Rome) ; Chiozzi, S (INFN, Ferrara) ; Cretaro, P (INFN, Rome) ; Di Lorenzo, S (Pisa U. ; INFN, Pisa) ; Fantechi, R (INFN, Pisa) ; Fiorini, M (Ferrara U. ; INFN, Ferrara) ; Frezza, O (INFN, Rome) ; Lamanna, G (Frascati) ; Lo Cicero, F (INFN, Rome) et al. /NA62
A commercial Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used to build a fast Level 0 (L0) trigger system tested parasitically with the TDAQ (Trigger and Data Acquisition systems) of the NA62 experiment at CERN. In particular, the parallel computing power of the GPU is exploited to perform real-time fitting in the Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector. [...]

The NA62 experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) aims to measure the Branching Ratio of the very rare kaon decay K+ → π+νν, collecting O (100) events with a 10% background to make a stringent test of the Standard Model. One of the main backgrounds to the proposed measurement is represented by the K+ → π+π0, decay. [...]

Real-time FPGA design for the L0-trigger of the RICH detector of the NA62 experiment at CERN SPS / Barbanera, Mattia (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U. ; CERN) ; Gonnella, F (Birmingham U. ; CERN)
The NA62 experiment aims at measuring rare kaon decays, in order to precisely test the standard model. The RICH (Ring Imaging CHerenkov) detector of the experiment is instrumental in charged-particle identification and in measurement of their crossing time, with a resolution better than 100 ps. [...]
