MERIT is a proof-of-principle experiment of a target station suitable as source for future muon colliders or neutrino factories. When installed at the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) PS (Proton Synchrotron)complex fast-extracted high-intensity proton beams intercepted a free mercury jet inside a normal-conducting, pulsed 15-T capture solenoid magnet cooled with liquid nitrogen. We describe an experiment designed as a proof-of-principle test for a target system capable of converting a 4 MW proton beam into a high-intensity muon beam suitable for incorporation into either a neutrino factory complex or a muon collider. The target system is based on exposing a free mercury jet to an intense proton beam in the presence of a high strength solenoidal field..

Optical Diagnostic Results from the MERIT High-Power Target Experiment / Kirk, H G (Brookhaven) ; Park, H (Brookhaven) ; Tsang, T (Brookhaven) ; Efthymiopoulos, I (CERN) ; Fabich, A (CERN) ; Haug, F (CERN) ; Lettry, J (CERN) ; Palm, M (CERN) ; Mokhov, N (Fermilab) ; Striganov, S (Fermilab) et al.
We report on the analysis of data collected from the optical diagnostics of the MERIT experiment which was run at CERN in the fall of 2007. The breakup of the free mercury jet resulting from the impact of intense proton beams from the CERN PS within a magnetic field environment is described..

The Merit(nTOF-11) High Intensity Liquid Mercury Target Experiment at the CERN PS / Efthymiopoulos, I (CERN) ; Bennett, J R J (Rutherford) ; Caretta, O (Rutherford) ; Carroll, A J (Oak Ridge) ; Fabich, A (CERN) ; Graves, V B (Oak Ridge) ; Grudiev, A (CERN) ; Haug, F (CERN) ; Kirk, H G (Brookhaven) ; Lettry, Jacques (CERN) et al.
The MERIT(nTOF-11) experiment is a proof-ofprinciple test of a target system for a high power proton beam to be used as front-end for a neutrino factory or a muon collider. The experiment took data in autumn 2007 with the fast-extracted beam from the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) to a maximum intensity of $30 × 10^{12}$ per pulse. [...]

The MERIT (MERcury Intense Target) experiment was run in the fall of 2007 using 14 and 24 GeV intense proton beams from the CERN PS. It is a proof-of-principle experiment designed to validate a target concept for producing an intense muon source for a future muon collider or neutrino factory. [...]
