Heat transfer of flow boiling carbon dioxide in vertical upward direction / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Revellin, Rémi (INSA, Villeurbanne) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Heat transfer measurements of flow boiling Carbon Dioxide (CO$_2$) in vertical upward direction have been carried out with a dedicated test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The investigation covers saturation temperatures within a range of $-25 \degree \textrm{C} \leq T_{\mathrm{sat}} +5 \degree \textrm{C}$, mass velocities from 100kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ $\leq G \leq $ 450 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and heat fluxes of 5.3 kW m$^{-2}$ and 11.4 kW m$^{-2}$. Adiabatic two-phase pressure drop of carbon dioxide in different channel orientations / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Revellin, Rémi (Lyon U.)
Adiabatic pressure drop measurements of two-phase Carbon Dioxide (CO$_2$) have been carried out in horizontal, vertical upward and downward direction with a dedicated test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). A database of more than 1100 measurements, consisting of 512 data points in horizontal and 295 data points for each vertical up- and downflow respectively, has been compiled within this study. [...]

Computer Vision-Based Classification of Flow Regime and Vapor Quality in Vertical Two-Phase Flow / Kadish, Shai (Cape Town U.) ; Schmid, David (CERN) ; Son, Jarryd (Cape Town U.) ; Boje, Edward (Cape Town U.)
This paper presents a method to classify flow regime and vapor quality in vertical two-phase (vapor-liquid) flow, using a video of the flow as the input; this represents the first high-performing and entirely camera image-based method for the classification of a vertical flow regime (which is effective across a wide range of regimes) and the first image-based tool for estimating vapor quality. The approach makes use of computer vision techniques and deep learning to train a convolutional neural network (CNN), which is used for individual frame classification and image feature extraction, and a deep long short-term memory (LSTM) network, used to capture temporal information present in a sequence of image feature sets and to make a final vapor quality or flow regime classification. Flow pattern observations and flow pattern map for adiabatic two-phase flow of carbon dioxide in vertical upward and downward direction / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Revellin, Rémi (INSA, Villeurbanne) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
A test facility to investigate flow pattern transitions of vertical two-phase flow of CO2 has been built within the scope of the high-luminosity detector upgrades at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Adiabatic flow pattern observations for both vertical up- and downflow are recorded with high-speed imaging in tubes of 8 mm inner diameter, with saturation temperatures in the range of −25◦C to +5◦C and mass velocities ranging from 100 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to 450 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. A database of 431 flow pattern observations in upward and 123 in downward direction has been compiled. [...]

Advancements and plans for the LHC upgrade detector thermal management with CO2 evaporative cooling / Tropea, P (CERN) ; Daguin, J (CERN) ; Giakoumi, D (CERN) ; Koss, N (CERN) ; Petagna, P (CERN) ; Postema, H (CERN) ; Schmid, D (CERN) ; Verlaat, B (CERN) ; Zwalinski, L (CERN)
Following its pioneering application in the present LHCb Velo detector, CO$_{2}$ evaporative cooling has become the consolidated technology for the thermal management of low-temperature operated silicon detectors at LHC. ATLAS Insertable B-Layer and CMS Phase I Pixel are successfully operating with such cooling system since a few years and LHCb has selected the same technology for the new Upstream Tracker and the upgraded Velo, both to be installed during LS2.
