Heat transfer of flow boiling carbon dioxide in vertical upward direction / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Revellin, Rémi (INSA, Villeurbanne) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Heat transfer measurements of flow boiling Carbon Dioxide (CO$_2$) in vertical upward direction have been carried out with a dedicated test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The investigation covers saturation temperatures within a range of $-25 \degree \textrm{C} \leq T_{\mathrm{sat}} +5 \degree \textrm{C}$, mass velocities from 100kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ $\leq G \leq $ 450 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ and heat fluxes of 5.3 kW m$^{-2}$ and 11.4 kW m$^{-2}$. Flow pattern observations and flow pattern map for adiabatic two-phase flow of carbon dioxide in vertical upward and downward direction / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Revellin, Rémi (INSA, Villeurbanne) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
A test facility to investigate flow pattern transitions of vertical two-phase flow of CO2 has been built within the scope of the high-luminosity detector upgrades at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Adiabatic flow pattern observations for both vertical up- and downflow are recorded with high-speed imaging in tubes of 8 mm inner diameter, with saturation temperatures in the range of −25◦C to +5◦C and mass velocities ranging from 100 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ to 450 kg m$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. A database of 431 flow pattern observations in upward and 123 in downward direction has been compiled. [...]

Adiabatic two-phase pressure drop of carbon dioxide in different channel orientations / Schmid, David (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Verlaat, Bart (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Schiffmann, Jürg (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Revellin, Rémi (Lyon U.)
Adiabatic pressure drop measurements of two-phase Carbon Dioxide (CO$_2$) have been carried out in horizontal, vertical upward and downward direction with a dedicated test facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). A database of more than 1100 measurements, consisting of 512 data points in horizontal and 295 data points for each vertical up- and downflow respectively, has been compiled within this study. [...]

Experimental flow boiling heat transfer in a small polyimide channel / Gómez Marzoa, Manuel (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne ; Sao Paulo U.) ; Ribatski, Gherhardt (Sao Paulo U.) ; Thome, John Richard (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
New experimental flow boiling heat transfer results averaged along a very low thermal conductivity polyimide channel are presented. The experimental setup consists of a horizontal, 285 mm-long, 2.689 mm inner diameter polyimide tube, heated by a counter-current, external water flow. [...]

New insights on boiling carbon dioxide flow in mini- and micro-channels for optimal silicon detector cooling / Hellenschmidt, D. (CERN, UBONN) ; Bomben, M. (CNRS-LPNHE) ; Calderini, G. (CNRS-LPNHE) ; Boscardin, M. (FBK) ; Crivellari, M. (FBK) ; Ronchin, S. (FBK) ; Petagna, P. (CERN)
Whilst the thermal management needs of future silicon detectors are increasing, the required mass and volume minimization of all detector ancillaries gets more demanding. This requires highly effective active cooling in very small channels. [...]

Towards defining the optimal design parameters for a test setup studying heat transfer with carbon dioxide at supercritical conditions / Pedano Medina, Camila Rocio (KIT - Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (DE)) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Mall-Gleissle, Susanne (Offenburg University of Applied Sciences)
As the demand for environmentally friendly refrigeration technologies continues to grow, the use of natural refrigerants for the thermal management of detectors for high-energy physics becomes increasingly relevant. While the use of boiling CO2 flows is well established at CERN for applications requiring cold conditions, this study focuses on investigating the heat transfer capabilities of carbon dioxide in supercritical conditions. Investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop of CO(2) two-phase flow in a horizontal minichannel / Wu, J (CERN) ; Helmer, D (CERN) ; Haug, F (CERN) ; Franke, C (Esslingen, Hochsch.) ; Bremer, J (CERN) ; Eisel, T (CERN) ; Koettig, T (CERN)
An innovative cooling system based on evaporative CO(2) two-phase flow is under investigation for the tracker detectors upgrade at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). The radiation hardness and the excellent thermodynamic properties emphasize carbon dioxide as a cooling agent in the foreseen minichannels. [...]
