Flexibility and performance offered by very large crossing angles with values of Beta* between 30cm and 60cm for the LHC Phase 1 Upgrade / Fartoukh, S ; Miles, J
The large aperture triplet quadrupoles proposed for the LHC Phase 1 Upgrade provide an exceptional opportunity to increase the beam separation crossing angles and significantly reduce (even eliminate) the detrimental effects of the long range beam-beam interaction. The inevitable reduction in luminosity due to the large crossing angles can be offset by increasing the total beam current. [...]

First field test of FiDeL : The magnetic field description for the LHC / Bottura, L (CERN) ; Buzio, M (CERN) ; Catalan-Lasheras, N (CERN) ; Deniau, L (CERN) ; Di Castro, M (CERN) ; Fartoukh, S (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Hagen, P (CERN) ; Koutchouk, Jean-Pierre (CERN) ; Lamont, M (CERN) et al.
The start-up of the LHC has provided the first field test for the concept, functionality and accuracy of FiDeL, the Field Description for the LHC. FiDeL provides a parametric model of the transfer function of the main field integrals generated by the series of magnets in the LHC powering circuits, comprising superconducting and normal-conducting main optical elements and high-order harmonic correctors. [...]

First Field Test of FiDeL : the Magnetic Field Description for the LHC / Bottura, L (CERN) ; Buzio, M (CERN) ; Catalan-Lasheras, N (CERN) ; Deniau, L (CERN) ; Di Castro, M (INFN, Naples ; Naples U.) ; Giovannozzi, M (CERN) ; Hagen, P (CERN) ; Koutchouk, J (CERN) ; Lamont, M (CERN) ; Miles, J (CERN) et al.
The start-up of the LHC has provided the first field test for the concept, functionality and accuracy of FiDeL, the Field Description for the LHC. FiDeL is primarily a parametric model of the transfer function of the main field integrals generated by the series of magnets in the LHC powering circuits, from main optical elements to high-order harmonic correctors, both superconducting and normal-conducting magnets. Main Field Tracking Measurement in the LHC Superconducting Dipole and Quadrupole Magnets / Xydi, P (CERN) ; Sammut, N (Malta U. ; CERN) ; Alemany-Fernandez, R (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Deferne, G (CERN) ; Lamont, M (CERN) ; Miles, J (CERN) ; Mompo, R (CERN) ; Strzelczyk, M (CERN) ; Venturini-Delsolaro, W (CERN)
One of the most stringent requirements during the energy ramp of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is to have a constant ratio between dipole-quadrupole and dipole-dipole field so as to control the variation of the betatron tune and of the beam orbit throughout the acceleration phase, hence avoiding particle loss. To achieve the nominal performance of the LHC, a maximum variation of ±0.003 tune units can be tolerated. [...]

A Demonstration Experiment for the Forecast of Magnetic Field and Field Errors in the Large Hadron Collider / Sammut, N J (Malta U. ; CERN) ; Alemany-Fernandez, R (CERN) ; Bottura, L (CERN) ; Deferne, G (CERN) ; Lamont, M (CERN) ; Miles, J (CERN) ; Sanfilippo, S (PSI, Villigen) ; Strzelczyk, M (CERN) ; Venturini-Delsolaro, W (CERN) ; Xydi, P (CERN)
In order to reduce the burden on the beam-based feedback, the Large Hadron Collider control system is equipped with the Field Description for the LHC (FiDeL) which provides a forecast of the magnetic field and the multipole field errors. FiDeL has recently been extensively tested at CERN to determine main field tracking, multipole forecasting and compensation accuracy. [...]
