Various initiatives in Europe have bene launched to study superconducting magnets for a rotatable gantry suitable for delivery up to 440 MeV/A carbon ions for hadron therapy. One initiative is led by INFN inside an agreement with CERN, CNAO and MedAustron aiming at designing and manufacturing a strongly curved costheta dipole (Rbending = 1.6 m) rated for 4 T central field and a ramp rate of 0.15-0.4 T/s. The excellent performance of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the extension of Run 3 by one year have led to a significant increase of the expected integrated luminosity by the end of its operation and before the start of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), exceeding the design LHC integrated luminosity of 300 fb−1 for which the final focus region has been designed. Preliminary Study of 4 T Superconducting Dipole for a Light Rotating Gantry for Ion-Therapy / Rossi, L (Milan U. ; LASA, Segrate) ; Benedetto, E ; De Matteis, E (LASA, Segrate) ; Farinon, S (INFN, Genoa) ; Felcini, E (CNAO, Milan) ; Karppinen, M (CERN) ; Mariotto, S (Milan U. ; LASA, Segrate) ; Musenich, R (INFN, Genoa) ; Perini, D (CERN) ; Prioli, M (LASA, Segrate) et al.
A collaboration between CERN, CNAO, INFN, and MedAustron has been formed aiming at designing a light rotating gantry suitable for hadron therapy based on 430 MeV/n carbon ion beams. After a first design for a 3 T dipole field, as the backbone of the gantry magnetic system, now the collaboration is looking at an alternative design, for at least 4 T field with a faster ramp rate. Next generation ion therapy magnets both for gantry and for accelerator (synchrotron) are under investigation in a recently launched European collaboration that, in the frame of the European H2020 HITRI plus and I.FAST programmes, has obtained some funding for work packages on superconducting magnets. Design and technology of superconducting magnets will be developed for ion therapy synchrotron and -especially- gantry, taking as reference beams of 430 MeV/nucleon ions (C-ions) with 10 10 ions/pulse.
