The EXTRA-BL4S experiment for the measurement of the energy and angular distributions of transition radiation X-rays / e EXTRA-BL4S Collaboration
We have designed and implemented an experiment to measure the angular distributions and the energy spectra of the transition radiation X-rays emitted by fast electrons and positrons crossing different radiators. Our experiment was selected among the proposals of the 2021 Beamline for Schools contest, a competition for high-school students organized every year by CERN and DESY, and was performed at the DESY II Test Beam facility area TB21, using a high-purity beam of electrons or positrons with momenta in the range from 1 to 6 GeV/c. The next generation of satellite experiments for the studies of cosmic radiation will be equipped with plastic scintillators read-out by Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), to be used as anti-coincidence detectors for gamma rays or for the identification of charged nuclei. Studying of hadron production in forward direction at the LHC energy has a great interest both for understanding of the fundamental QCD processes and also in applied areas such as the description of ultra-high energy cosmic particle interactions. The energies of secondary hadrons in such studies almost reach the maximum energy available at the LHC of ~6 TeV, which corresponds to a Lorentz γ-factor up to 104 and above. [...]
