Software migration of the CMS ECAL Detector Control System during the CERN Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown II / CMS Collaboration
During the second long shutdown (LS2) of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the Detector Control System (DCS) of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) is undergoing a large software upgrade at various levels. The supervisory software has been reviewed, extended and migrated to use the latest versions of the underlying software technologies. [...]

The upgrade and re-validation of the Compact Muon Solenoid Electromagnetic Calorimeter Control and Safety Systems during the Second Long Shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN / CMS Collaboration
The Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) is one of the sub-detectors of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), a general-purpose particle detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS ECAL Detector Control System (DCS) and the CMS ECAL Safety System (ESS) have supported the detector operations and ensured the detectors integrity since the CMS commissioning phase, more than 10 years ago. Improving the safety and protective automatic actions of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter detector control system / Jimenez Estupinan, Raul (Zurich, ETH) ; Adzic, Peter (Belgrade U.) ; Cirkovic, Predrag (Belgrade U.) ; Di Calafiori, Diogo Raphael (ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Dissertori, Guenther (ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Djambazov, Lubomir (ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Jovanovic, Dragoslav (Belgrade U.) ; Lustermann, Werner (ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Milenovic, Predrag (Belgrade U.) ; Zelepoukine, Serguei (ETH, Zurich (main) ; Wisconsin U., Madison) /CMS Collaboration
The CMS ECAL Detector Control System (DCS) features several monitoring mechanisms able to react and perform automatic actions based on pre-defined action matrices. The DCS is capable of early detection of anomalies inside the ECAL and on its off-detector support systems, triggering automatic actions to mitigate the impact of these events and preventing them from escalating to the safety system. Beam test evaluation of electromagnetic calorimeter modules made from proton-damaged PbWO$_4$ crystals / Adams, T (Florida State U., Tallahassee (main)) ; Adzic, P (Belgrade U.) ; Ahuja, S (Sao Paulo, IFT) ; Anderson, D (Caltech) ; Andrews, M B (Carnegie Mellon U.) ; Antropov, I (Ecole Polytechnique) ; Antunovic, Z (Split U.) ; Arcidiacono, R (INFN, Turin ; Moscow, ITEP) ; Arenton, M W (Virginia U.) ; Argiro, S (INFN, Turin ; Moscow, ITEP) et al.
The performance of electromagnetic calorimeter modules made of proton-irradiated PbWO(4) crystals has been studied in beam tests. The modules, similar to those used in the Endcaps of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL), were formed from 5×5 matrices of PbWO(4) crystals, which had previously been exposed to 24 GeV protons up to integrated fluences between 2.1× 10(13) and 1.3× 10(14) cm(−)(2). The first long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider (LS1, 2013-2015) provided an opportunity for significant upgrades of the detector control and safety systems of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter. A thorough evaluation was undertaken, building upon experience acquired during several years of detector operations. [...]

The Detector Control System of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter has undergone significant improvements during the first LHC Long Shutdown. Based on the experience acquired during the first period of physics data taking of the LHC, several hardware projects were carried out to improve data accuracy, to minimise the impact of failures and to extend remote control possibilities in order to accelerate recovery from problematic situations. The Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) is one of the sub-detectors of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The Detector Control System (DCS) that has been developed and implemented for the CMS ECAL was deployed in accordance with the LHC schedule and has been supporting the CMS data-taking since LHC physics runs started in 2009. During these years, the control system has been regularly adapted according to operational experience and new requirements, always respecting the constraints imposed on significant changes to a running system. Several hardware and software upgrades and system extensions were therefore deferred to the first LHC Long Shutdown (LS1). This paper presents the main architectural differences between the system that supported the CMS ECAL during its first years and the new design for the coming physics runs after LS1. Details on the upgrade planning, including the certification methods performed in the CMS ECAL DCS laboratory facilities, reports on the implementation progress and the expectations for the post-LS1 system are highlighted.

Radiation hardness qualification of PbWO4 scintillation crystals for the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter / Adzic, P. (Belgrade U.) ; Almeida, N. (LIP, Lisbon) ; Andelin, D. (Virginia U.) ; Anicin, I. (Florida State U.) et al. /CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter Group
Ensuring the radiation hardness of PbWO4 crystals was one of the main priorities during the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS experiment at CERN. The production on an industrial scale of radiation hard crystals and their certification over a period of several years represented a difficult challenge both for CMS and for the crystal suppliers.
