What is stereo?




There are now two system of high fidelity, monophonic (monaural) and stereophonic. Monophonic is a system that starts from one microphone and is fed through a single high fidelity set. Stereophonic is a double system. Two separate microphones are placed at different sides of the orchestra and two different systems are used to keep the two signals or channels separated. Two separate speakers are used, placed on different sides of you room. Stereo is much like 3-D photography, two slightly different sound reach your ears giving you a new dimension in sound.

Sansui SS-10 headphones

High-Fidelity Stereo Headphone Set

The virtues of being alone have long been underrated. Or ware until Sansui decided to do something really meaningful about it. Now enter the SS-10 stereo headphone set, affectionately dedicated to those purists to whom stereo is indeed a very personal experience, ideally savored in princely solitude, far from the maddening crowd. Equipped with newly developed mechanical two-way speakers, this truly high-fidelity set reproduces a wide range of frequencies from very, very low to ultra-high with uniform smoothness. Few other stereo headphones on the market today are so discreet and so solicitous of your undisturbed listening pleasure. The SS-10 "direct line" set offers a host of attractive features, including separate volume controls for each channel, identical left and right channel characteristics, and hand-sewn so comfortable that it's a very wise investment from that standpoint alone. But Sansui is also very understanding about the pleasures of stereo sharing, and providently thought to make the "direct line" convertible to a "party line". So that on those occasions when there's something special you'd like someone special to hear with you, the SS-10 has a two-meter long Y-shaped extension cord equipped with two jacks for connecting two sets of headphones. Mechanical 2-Way Speakers

The unique, newly developed mechanical 2-way speakers of the SS-10 utilize large 8 cm, special cone papers for the low and middle range notes, and quality polyester diaphragms that also cover the high ranges. These enable the SS-10 to reproduce sound with an absolute minimum of intermodulation and harmonic distortion and a maximum of transparency and resolution.

Wide Frequency Range

Thanks to the mechanical 2-way speakers, the SS-10 reproduces a wide 20 to 20,000 Hz range of sound, from well-damped, powerful rich heavy bass comparable to that reproduces by large speakers, to delicate, transparent treble, all with exceptional smoothness.

Identical Channel Characteristics

The SS-10 is designed to minimize the difference in tonal quality and output sound pressure level between the left and right channels, enabling you to enjoy well-balanced stereo sound. Further, unlike speaker systems, a stereo headphone set completely separates the left and right channel sounds, so that the stereo separation is exceptional.

Separate Volume Controls

Omni-Dynamic Stereo Headphones

Sansui gives stereo music listeners the rich bass of dynamic acoustic transducers as well as the wide frequency range and brilliant musical reproduction qualities of the electrostatic types in these all-new, smartly designed SS-100 stereo headphones.

"Omni" means that the diaphragms inside the comfortably fitting earpieces each distribute a uniform driving force over its entire flat surface, avoiding split vibrations. The low mass of each diaphragm also means less total harmonic distortion and less phase distortion - the same advantages you have with electrostatic drivers. But since the SS-100 design is essentially dynamic , no electrostatic adaptor or special amplifier is required, and you enjoy a natural yet powerful bass reproduction as well.

With the Sansui Omni-Dynamic SS-100, frequency response is flat over the entire musical spectrum from superlows to ultrahighs. Harmonic distortion is minimal, impedance is flat with no trace of peaks or dips, and your amplifier or receiver is shown off at its best without overstraining.

 


Omni-Dynamic Principle

These handsome, Sansui-exclusive headphones employ an omni-dynamic transducer (diaphragm) in each earpiece. The units are made of polyester film, stretched to a uniform tautness and contained between two anisotropic magnet plates (Fig.1.) On the diaphragm film is etched a voice coil pattern (Fig. 2) And each of the magnet plates has a field (Fig. 3) which, when activated by the plus and minus pulsations of the musical input signal, moves the diaphragm to end from based on Fleming's left-hand rule as applies to current flow in coils.

 


Driver Construction

Omni-Dynamic Driver

As they are very thin and low in mass, the diaphragms offer excellent transient characteristics over a wider frequency range than can those shaped as cones or domes. This means you have a flat response from the superlows to ultrahighs with any musical input signal. Omni-dynamic drive means, too, that all sections of the diaphragm surfaces move in linear piston motion, without split vibrations, thus reducing harmonic distortion and extending dynamic range.

Powerful Magnets

The anisotropic magnet plates in the SS-100 each have high magnetic density to afford the headphones the very high sensitivity (efficiency) of 94 dB/mW.

Optimum Amplifier Load

Since the impedance of these headphones is literally constant at all frequencies, your amplifier or receiver is asked only to deliver an optimum load, meaning that you are assured of the best sound quality from your unit

No-Adaptor Design

To drive the SS-100 simply plug in the provided jack at the headphone outlet on your amplifier or receiver. No AC power booster or other adaptor is required.

Eight neoprene supports separate the earpiece from the headband assembly, increasing wearing comfort. Sansui SR-535 turntable

Automatic Direct-Drive Turntable

Sansui wants everyone to enjoy hi-fi music with the minimum possible noise, distortion and inconvenience. That's why the Sansui SR-535 automatic direct-drive turntable puts the emphasis on pure hi-fi performance and true handling ease. Accuracy of platter rotation, and a strong, anti-howl construction characteristics in the musical department. The direct-drive motor is a high-torque type and the special tonearm has a unique support to ensure delicate performance. Record reproduction is always clean and pure.

One simple control, the Auto/Manual Play Lever, does all the work. Put a record on the platter, set the record-size selector and pull the lever once; the tonearm is lifted, moved and gently lowered to the lead-in groove, when the record ends, the arm is returned to its rest and power shuts off automatically. The same lever permits manual play when desired. More convenience is offered in the Repeat facility permitting you to select one to five replays, or infinite replay.

 

Automatic Operation

One control knob does it all. The jumbo-sized Auto/Manual Play Lever has three positions of Manual On, Off, Auto Start/Stop. For a single automatic play, you simply place a record on the platter and gently pull the Auto/Manual lever into the Auto Start/Stop position. The tonearm lifts automatically as the platter begins to spin, the stylus is placed over the lead-in groove of the record, and the tonearm descends to begin play. If you desire to interrupt play at any time, simply pull the lever again, or you may wait till the record ends. In either case, the arm is automatically lifted  and returned to its rest, and power is switched off, all without your assistance.

When manual play is desired, simply set the control lever to the Manual On position. When the platter begins to rotate, move the stylus to over the part of the record you want to hear. An oil-damped Cueing Lever is provided to help you avoid damaging your valuable records. As in Auto Play, the Manual position on the lever allows the automatic return mechanism to return the tonearm to its rest.

Additional convenience Auto Repeat control on the SR-535.

In the Off position if sets the turntable in auto-return mode. Or, you can select from "1" to "5" repeat plays, or "infinite" which allows the automatic mechanism to continuously repeat its simple job until you change the repeat control settings.

 


Accurate Drive System

Sansui engineers have done if again. The platter of the Sr-535 never shows any appreciable slow-down under reasonable loads. This means that your 33-⅓ and 45 rpm records are always played at the correct speeds for best musical performance. This accuracy is assured by an advanced, high-torque, 20-pole/30-slot brushless DC type servo motor for direct drive. Speed drift is effectively eliminated by the Sansui-exclusive rotor position sensor mechanism, coupled with the motor's bias-controlled saturable core (Sansui Pat. Pend). Thanks to the dependable power supply, the drive voltage is kept constant for accuracy under any conditions.

Mechanically, as well as electrically, the SR-535 has impressive precision. All components and parts are designed, machined and assembled under very careful super-vision to live up to Sansui's strict quality control standards. The bearing sleeve is mirror finished for complete roundness, for instance. The motor shaft/center spindle is formed of the finest polished carbon-chrome steel and rides in a thrust bearing of tough friction-resisting synthetic polyamide. We've used a special lubricant, one developed by the aerospace industry, to ensure low friction in the motor over long years of operation.

Smoother rotation is also ensured by the heavy (1,4 kg ) aluminum die-cast platter. This, plus Sansui's attention to every minor point in design and construction, gives the Sr-535 impressive specifications low 0,038% wo/flutter and better than 67 dB rumble.

Fine speed adjustment with strobe

On the edge of the oversized (31,8 cm or just over 12-inch) platter there are four rows of stroboscopic patterns, two each for both speeds to permit fine adjustment when your electrical power is either 50 Hz or 60 Hz. The strobe light illuminates the platter edge so that you can visually check its rotation speed for accuracy. Once the correct speed is reached, the speeds will continue to spin accurately, or you can use two fine speed controls to vary platter by as much as ±3,5% from the standard speeds. By the way, these controls are recessed to avoid accidental speed change.

 


Stabilized Tonearm

Exceptionally high tonearm stability is one of the reasons the Sansui Sr-535 performs with such high musicality. Despite the attractive price of this fully automatic turntable, the tonearm has the same stability and resistance to resonance found in much more expensive models. Spurious vertical travel and harmful torsion or twisting are avoided by a special support with two vertical pivots. The mass of the arm is concentrated at these points to clearly define the unit's fulcrum for better mechanical advantages, particularly in the bass frequencies which are delivered from your record free of "mud".

Low-resonance design

Resonance is further suppressed by the special acoustic absorbent, we use inside the highly rigid tonearm tubing. Then, we've decoupled the balance weight from the arm shaft vis a newly designed rubber damper. All types of vibration whether  transmitted through the air or through the physical structure, are shut out before reach the stylus.

Cabinet

Sansui designers take special pride in the clean, modernistic looks of the SR-535 turntable. The silver metallic finish sets off the precision lines of the cabinet and is just "flat" enough to resist glare from room lights without appearing too dull. The clean lines are more than good looking, advanced computer technology and time-tested carpentry techniques alike were used in designing the Sr-535 to resist acoustic feedback or "howling". The automatic mechanism is mounted on a separate chassis inside the cabinet for instance while the low-profile of the base and its complex suspension system further ensure good sound.

Complex-suspension

To defeat all types of vibration before they can harm your music, the SR-535 is suspended in a complex system of rubber and spring devices. Air-borne vibration, such as sound-waves from your speakers, and structure-borne vibrations, such as originating from your operation of amplifier or receiver controls, from footsteps, etc. Are effectively damped so that your music retains its tight bass, clean mids and crisp highs.

Sansui FR-4060 turntable

Electronic Automatic Transcription Turntable

Stereo purists who still claim only a manually-operated turntable can faithfully reproduce disc recordings without strain have some catching up to do. For here is a turntable - a fully automated transcription turntable - which performs with the ease and stress-free operation of a first-class manual but has the convenience and practicality of an automatic as well. The Sansui FR-4060 very efficiently eliminates the one major disadvantage of the complicated :changer-type" turntable by employing a non-mechanical, purely electric device, the galvano-magnetic detection mechanism, to detect the end of a record and prepare the tonearm for automatic operation. It makes it possible for the tonearm to ride completely free of stress-producing mechanical linkage systems until it is time for the automatic lead-in, return, repeat or cut operations to take over. In this way, the stylus is protected from distortion-producing lateral thrust, your records are safeguarded just as they would be on a manual, and since the tonearm is free, it can be moved to any part of the record manually, even during automatic play.

Sansui TU-919 tuner

Sansui Patented Digitally Quartz-Locked FM/AM Stereo Tuner with Impeccable Drift-Free Tuning Accuracy.

FM Fronted Sensitivity; Enhanced by low-noise Dual-Gate MOS FET and 5-gang Tuning capacitor

The extraordinary tonal quality of the Sansui TU-919 begins here. Crossmodulation and interference are avoided in the FM fronted using a low-noise Dual-Gate MOS FET RF amp and a wide-gap, frequency-linear 5-Gang variable capacitor of high precision. The 50 dB Quieting Sensitivity is an excellent 13,5 dBf (mono) and 35,5 dBf (stereo)

 

FM IF Selectivity; Very low group delay means much-improved sound.

Tonal quality is further enhanced by flattening transient group delay and phase distortion to achieve higher selectivity with lower distortion in the FM IF section. The real test of our IF circuitry comes when inputs from your antenna vary unpredictably in level.

Actual field tests show the effectiveness of the ten differential IF stages, contained in one Darlington-connected differential IC, and the linear-phase ceramic filters found here. Changes in signal level have hardly any effect on selectivity.

 

Patented Variable Group-Delay Equalizer; Distortion is further reduced

This is a unique device that permits the independent adjustment of the equivalent amount of Frequency Response of the IF signal within the bandwidth. This, in turn, helps eliminate any deviation, however minute, in group-deley response within the bandwidth. Higher Signal-to-Noise Ratio and lower distortion are also achieved.

 

FM Stereo Sound; Wider separation and purer fidelity from PLL

Stereo FM broadcasts are multiplexed with a "pilot" signal to trigger receiving tuners into the stereo mode and enable them to "decpde" the composite signal into left and right channels.  Once its job is done, that "pilot" (a 19 kHz signal) must be entirely removed from the audio signal. The conventional filter used for this can cause more problems than it prevents.

Such 19 kHz filters are usually positioned at the output of the stereo demodulator. Together with the "pilot" they also often filter out the upper end of the frequency response and cause phase distortion as well. Sansui avoids such filters in the TU-010 for a more musical sound.

Our stereo dempdulator is a PLL type with a special "pilot" cancelling circuit (not a filter) included in its IC. It eliminates the 19 kHz signal before it enters the switching or demodulation stage. Output of the demodulator amp is pure audio.

 


Wide-Range DC Configuration; More guarantees of cleaner sound.

As in the highly advanced Sansui AU amplifiers and our best Pure Power receivers, the DC amplifier configuration in the TU-919 offers cleaner audio reproduction in both AM and FM. Main advantages are; Wider dynamic range; Lower TIM distortion; and Superb frequency response all are vital to hi-fi. These parameters are made still more dependable by our reduction of the internal power-supply impedance across the widest possible frequency range. Reproduction is always well balanced.

High-Power Drive Ratio Detectr; S/N and linearity are improved

A newly-developed, wide-range, high-power drive ratio detector, driven by a triple-base Darlington-connected IC, is used in the FM discriminator. It contributes to improved linearity and Signal-to-Noise Ratio. For more stability and still less noise we've housed the discriminator in a shielded casing, separate from the IF circuit.

 

Selectable IF Band for AM; Wide/Narrow improves reception

By broadening the signal-passing bandwidth in the AM tuner section, frequency range is dramatically improved. For this reason, you'll want to use the Wide position on the IF bandwidth selector. When the station to which you have tuned is strong enough, the results in improved high frequency response are impressive. On the other hand, weak or distant AM stations are received more clearly when you use the Narrow position; the interference caused by stronger station broadcasting on adjacent frequencies is dramatically lowered.

 

Sansui Exclusive FM Digitally Quartz-Locked System; Contained in a single LSI

We've combined a quartz crystal, providing a rock-steady reference base, with an error-free digital control in the TU919. this Sansui-exclusive system detects any tuning error caused by temperature, voltage and humidity changes and compensates for it instantly. Drift is now a thing of the past. Most other quartz tuners use analog phase reference controls that compare phase of two frequencies between the local oscillators and quartz crystals. In order to check and correct errors (drift). But our TU-919 doesn't instead it has a digital control system.

With it the frequency counter samples the local oscillator's frequency constantly, once every 0,01 seconds, timed by the accurate quartz. When there's an error, it's converted to digital units, which are then converted to voltage to control the local oscillator. When there's no error, the tuned frequency is locked to the station's frequency.

Sansui's digital processing doesn't use the kind of reference signal containing infinite harmonics; therefore, we've eliminated drift without compromising spurious response ratio, Signal-to-Noise Ratio sensitivity or other important specifications.

There more features make the Sansui system still easier to use. One, you need not remove your hand from the knob to make sure the station is surely quartz-locked. Two, locking range is wide, even rough tuning locks in the desired station and keeps it locked for hours. Three, should you turn off the tuner a built-in Re-Lock system memorizes your station for instant recall when you switch it on again.

Sansui has received patents on our Quartz/Digital-Lock System. And to ensure long-term reliability of its operation we've packaged it all in a single LSI with circuits equivalent to thousands of discrete transistors, resistors and diodes.

There are speaker systems a hundred times the size of the Sansui J33 which can't offer nearly the sound quality. Power handling capacity is 60 watts, an advantage ordinary small speaker systems can't equal. Luxurious "Piano" Finish on a Compact Speaker System

The Sansui J33 is finished in a deep black luster much in the same way a fine piano is finished. First the surface on the high-density enclosure panels are filled, then two layers of special lacquer are applied, again sanded smooth. Three more coats of lacquer are applied,, again sanded with care, filled, then wax-buffed to a high shine. The entire process takes nine separate steps, and results in an enclosure surface so smooth and hard it can resist nicks and scratches to retain its beautiful luster over the years.

Precision Panel Joining Means Ideal Air-Suspension Performance

Here's one of the secrets of the realistic bass response in the j33 - air-tight enclosure cabinetry that acts as a "spring" to reinforce the rich resonance of the low frequency musical sound waves produced by the woofer. To enclosure solid joints, Sansui craftsmen use a "plain miter Joint" technique, angling the edges of the enclosure panels and fitting the corners with extreme precision.

Seamed-Sheet Cone Assures Deep Musical Bass in 21 cm Woofer

The uniformly distributed mass and even thickness of the cone materials offer ideal density without adding unnecessary weight. Shape, too is important here, for the woofer cone is not straight but curved - formed by seamed-sheet technique which discourages distortion of all kinds. Ideal internal loss contributes still more to rich bass response.

The cone is then suspended by a rolled surround for ideal compliance, retaining its mobility even at high-level driving. Response is smooth whatever the level because the magnetic circuit features a large-sized ferrite magbet forming an exceptionally strong magnetic flux along the specially-treated, low-mass voice coil. High power handling, unusually high efficiency for a compact and believable bass reproduction are the advantages.

One-Piece Soft-Dome Tweeter Spreads Crisp Highs

Soft-dome tweeters, such as that in the Sansui J33 are known for their ability to avoid "beaming". That is, their output is radiated evenly in an expanding arc pattern to reach every corner of your listening room. Our soft-dome diaphragm, formed of polyester fiber of ideal firmness and elasticity, is damped by a uniform coating of acrylic-based chemical agent to effectively control harmful resonance while assuring linear response to varying input levels.

The dome is formed with a rolled surround all in one piece. Tonal degradation, caused when domes and surrounds are separately manufactured and bonded together, is thus avoided. Heat and distortion, too, pose no problem. This is because we use a 13,000 gauss magnetic circuit, a light voice coil and a rigid voice coil bobbin.

World's First "Mini" Speaker with Passive Radiator for Double-Rich Bass

Sansui has solved a big problem in little speakers. We custom-designed a passive radiator unit for the miniature 2-way, 2-speaker J11 system. It effectively restores the realistic rich bass sound which most other "minis" forfeit for their small size.

Double-rich bass isn't the only advantage in the J11. nor is its small size - no taller than a wine bottle or much wider than a paperback book - the feature you'll appreciate most. Where Sansui audio technology really shows up best is in the distinct sound image reproduction from this unique system - strictly hi-fi in every respect.

The surprising depth of the bass is complemented by natural sounding midrange and crisp highs for tonal balance. Bearing in the high frequencies is no problem since the newly-designed dome tweeter disperses its sound waves uniformly over a wide arc. The special design of the solid aluminum enclosure also adds to the big-hearted authority of this modestly sized "mini" from Sansui where it's all hi-fi.

 

Light and Firm Diaphragm for Tight Bass from 10 cm Woofer

It follows that if the passive radiator is to deliver authentic sound reinforcement from the woofer, the woofer itself must be of the highest performance standards. Here we've developed very special cone paper by mixing two different types of acerose pulps to achieve lightness, firmness and strength. The woofer cone, 10 cm in diameter, weighs only 0,6 grams, yet can respond faithfully to amp inputs over a wide frequency range.

Linearity in the woofer is further improved with the use of a separate, resin-formed surround. Distortion particularly in the second harmonics, is never noticeable, even during high-level reproduction, since the large magnet offers a huge 9,000 gauss field, uniformly distributed by the precision machined pole piece. The voice coil bobbin is highly heat resistant for constant performance, another assurance of excellent performance in all practical audio situations.

 

Soft-dome tweeter has Polyester-Based Cloth Diaphragm Large magnet

What are the three major benefits of the soft-dome design in tweeters. One, wide dispersion without "beaming". Two, low resonance to avoid distortion. Three, crispness and musically in the high frequencies. These, crispness and musically in the high frequencies. These add up to explain the popularity of soft domes, especially in "mini" systems. But we've added a fourth important benefit in outs, a better Signal-to-Noise Ratio by forming the one-piece diaphragm/rolled surround of responsive but firm polyester based cloth, damped by an acrylic-based agent, this construction avoids the use of chemical agents in binding the core to the surround, and thus prevents tonal degradation. To achieve transparent highs extending well into the supersonics, we've given this remarkable tweeter a powerful 9,000 gauss magnetic, flux, combulling phase irregularities by mounting an acoustic equalizer behind the diaphragm.

Sansui Computerized Full-Automatic Direct-Drive Quartz-Servo Turntable with D-O-B Tonearm

Silicon Dioxide (Quartz) Oscillator: A ready reference for dynamic response.

Most audiophiles are familiar with the use of reference oscillators in servosystems which help keep platter speeds accurate in direct-drive turntables. In the case of the FR-Q5 we have employed the most trustworthy of all-an energized silver of silicon dioxide (quartz crystal) which is entirely impervious to all conceivable variables such as changes in power-line frequency and voltage and in external/internal fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

The speed of the platter is detected and compared against the quartz reference signal via a PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) circuit contained in reliable ICs; variations in load, such as the drag caused when the stylus tracks a highly modulated groove, are instantly caught and corrected to result in outstanding dynamic response. Speed accuracy is just about as close to absolute as you can ever expect to come drift is never more than ±0,002%.

 

Magnetic-Pattern Detection: The correction is faster than the eye.

Sansui's all-new magnetic pattern detection system, generating as many as 960 pulses per each rotation of the platter, makes it possible to correct any speed deviation via the quartz/PLL servo in less than the blink of an eye.

Along the inside rim of the platter is a pattern of 960 magnetic poles; fixed beneath the platter is a stationary magnetic head - somewhat like the playback head on a tape deck - which senses the changing polarity of the revolving pattern and sends a "report" to the servo. If there are more (or fewer) pulses than there should be, the phase-comparison stage of the servo detects them and the controlling stage converts them to correctional information, slowing down (or speeding up) the direct-drive motor.

 

Instantaneous Rise & Electronic Brake: Absolutely no overshoot or undershoot.

Almost before you can remove your finger from the Start/Stop button - as rotation it is moving at the selected speed without any overshoot or undershoot. Additionally, when you change from 45 rpm to 33-⅓ rpm, or when you tell the platter to stop the built-in electronic brake comes into play for fast, accurate results.

 

Brushless Direct-Drive Motor: impeccable performance from high-precision parts.

In our special design we have employed the DC brushless, saturable-core system with a rotor-position sensor. It responds quickly and accurately to the control information it receives from the quartz/PLL servo. To reduce friction and wear, the motor shaft is made of special hard stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish in a "centerless" polishing technique to achieve an overall roundness never more than 0,2 µ from absolute. And for the thrust bearing, itself of a special low-wear nylon compound, we have used a newly-developed aerospace-grade lubricant.

 


Manual Operation: Just touch the tonearm

There is no switch on the Sansui FR-Q5 to defeat the full automatic operation. If you wish to use the tonearm manually, simply lift it up with the fingerpiece on the headshell; the built-in "computer" and its optical sensors will detect your touch and put the full automatic system on standby while you select another track on your record or return the arm to its rest.

 

D-O-B Tonearm: A novel theory put to practical use for purer sound.

After many long years of experimentation and experience, Sansui has developed what just may be the world's most accurate tonearm. In our patent-pending "Dyna-Optimum-Balanced) arm the dynamic fulcrum is placed precisely on the point or node of vibration. Because of this the arm exhibits very high stability and its counterweight, headshell and support components show almost none of the microscopic wobbling vibrations which, in other arms, cause still more mutual resonance and pass it on the stylus. In short, our D-O-B suffers none of the compound resonance which prevent accurate tracking and give rise to frequency modulation to "muddy" musical reproduction.

 

Computerized Tonearm - A technological First

A kind of electronic "brain" assisted by a team of optical sensors, controls the operation of the fully automatic tonearm on the Sansui FR-Q5 turntable with unprecedented accuracy. It monitors the moment-to-moment position of the arm, oversees the functions of the separate motor which lifts and returns the arm when required, and even memorizes action sequences.

Some people would call this a "computerized" system, and they wouldn't be far wrong. Actually, it makes use of a CPU (Central Processing Unit) which is contained in an LSI (Largo-Scale IC). Therefore, its reliability and precision cannot be bettered.

 

Quick and accurate response without compromise

Having developed one of the world's most sensitive tonearms for the FR-Q5, Sansui engineers weren't about to compromise that sensitivity by using an ordinary mechanically-linked full-auto system. Thanks to the CPU "brain" the arm remains entirely free during play, when the record ends, or if you touch the Start/Stop button at any time, the CPU sends a command to lift the arm and return it to its rest gently and quickly.

 

Fully protected against all conceivable mishaps

That's quite a promise - that this system is entirely accident proof. But it's true. The CPU permits the incorporation of a "fail-safe" system which gives total protection to the arm and its motor, its cartridge stylus, and your records.

If, for instance, you forget to unlock the tonearm clip before you touch the Start/Stop button, the CPU instantly countermands the start order and shuts off the arm motor before damage can occur.

 

Light-touch switches make full control easy.

All control switches on the FR-Q5 are short-stroke types requiring only the slightest finger pressure for positive operation.

After powering on the turntable, select speed and record size, place your record on the platter and touch the Start/Stop button; the CPU "brain" orders the arm up and over the opening track, then lets it fall slowly to the beginning groove. When the record ends, the optical sensor for lead-out informs the "brain" which immediately orders the arm's return. The turntable is then shut off automatically, unless you have also pushed the Repeat button, in which case the lead-in, play and return process will continue until you order it to stop, again with a light touch on the Start/Stop button.

 

The independent tonearm motor "remembers" the first noe.

As we have mentioned, there is a second motor in the Sansui FR-Q5, independent from the direct-drive platter motor, used exclusively to lift, cue, and return the tonearm. Its computerized operation is controlled electronically but it employs a mechanical damping system to ensure that the stylus is lowered to the very beginning of the lead-in groove every time when you cue a record.
