Nicolò Campodonico
I graduated in Classics (BA in 2018, MA in 2020) from the University of Pisa. I was an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Humanities at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa (2015-2020), where I have been a PhD student in Classics since 2020 (my supervisors are G. Rosati and A. Schiesaro).
My doctoral project consists in a comprehensive study of the biographical and anecdotal tradition on Virgil in Antiquity, from the earliest sources to the "Vitae" written by Suetonius’ and late antique grammarians. My aim is to demonstrate how Virgil’s life was narrated in parallel with the reception and interpretation of his works, as well as through anecdotal patterns also attested for other poets, particularly Homer.
My research interests include cases of literary ‘fakes’ and "pseudepigrapha" in Latin poetry, especially within the "Appendix Vergiliana" ("Catalepton" and "Ciris") and the "Corpus Tibullianum" (elegies by and about Sulpicia, pseudo-Tibullan poems). I have also worked on other Latin authors and other topics, such as the fragments of Pacuvius, mythology in Lucretius, Ovid’s "Epistula Sapphus", characters in Lucan, the poetics of Statius’ "Siluae", the robbers' tales in books 4 and 6 of Apuleius’ "Metamorphoses", political themes in Ambrose’s hymns, as well as Latin poetry and epigraphy in medieval Genoa.

Papers by Nicolò Campodonico
[ENG] This paper discusses Suetonius’ Life of Terence, and highlights the literary, more than strictly historical, significance of the biography. The anecdotes suggest parallels between Terence and other comic poets, Menander especially, through recurring biographical patterns. This invites a re-examination of these parallelisms in the context of Terence’s reception in antiquity, without attempting emendations based on a need to rationalize the text. An analysis of the epigrams by Caesar and Cicero, different but linked, placed at the end of the Vita, further underscores the importance of the comparison with Menander throughout the biography of Terence.
